i think a goal i have for tradewinds is never to "zoom out" further than the local trade network. or at least, to have the player story not zoom out. and i don't mean "they stay in one area and never leave", i mean "we should always be getting the same level of detail as we did at the start". i don't want it to ever be like "oh yeah, here's This Country and it has such-and-such qualities" because a country is too big!!!

i did a reading (sort of) from the tarot of the silicon dawn!!! this really is a good deck and i need to be less scared of it. the problem is i don't actually do tarot readings that often! but maybe i'll start a practice of it... my favorite thing to do with tarot cards is pick a story structure (3-act play, 5-room dungeon, kishotenketsu, verse/chorus) and draw cards for each of them and try to figure out what the overall story is that links them.

today i was reading from the incomparable queer furry sci fi Tarot of the Silicon Dawn by egypt urnash, and applying it to a verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure. so i got the four of cups for chorus, and the verses are 12 the hanged man, the king of wands, and the queen of wands. interesting.

i think in my head i built up silicno dawn as ths big significant thing, and then ended up never doing readings from it because i rarely want the vibe of Big Serious Hard Hitting Questions. i think i have all those answered tyvm

anyway, my first thought about my verse/chorus goes like this:

intro that shows you the hanged man: inscrutable and transcending their trials, they are smirking at you as they dangle. they know what's up even though they seem like they're in a bad spot.
chorus: dissatisfied with things being perfect.
verse: they were the queen, in command of everything, top of their game.
chorus: dissatisfied with things being perfect.
verse: they transitioned and are now a king, similarly.

part of me wants to make the trade goods super abstract, like "containers" and "fuel" and "protein" and then make them more specific on a per-town basis, like this town has available containers and then when we get there i can say it's a basketmaking town. but another part of me wants them to be specific and varied...

i see a fair amount of discourse about entity-component systems in game design and whether they're good or bad and it's frustrating the way it feels like people are talking past each other. there are two parts to a software paradigm like ECS: the way it's implemented and how that affects performance and under-the-hood stuff, and the way it affects the authoring ergonomics

i like ECS because it makes a lot of sense to me for authoring ergonomics. the idea of chunking up an actor into discrete "behaviors" makes a lot of sense and feels extensible and easy to work with. much better than, for example, an inheritance hierarchy for actor types. i think this is one of the things i preferred about unity's prefabs over godot's scene trees - it is unclear to me in godot what should be a script attached to an object vs a child of that object i guess

ECS also has a lot of purported speed benefits. they sound nice. i don't feel like i end up writing the kinds of games where you can see those speed benefits because i still live in the realm of "computers are very fast"!

fleshing out my "village" (it's like less than a hundred people) setting in my head. it's got a bunch of big houses (each has a lil belltower!) in a large circle around the crystal, surrounded further by smaller huts and workshops, and further out another couple large houses and a large circle of farmland.

the belltowers are there because the houses were started with the idea that they could be used as observation towers for whoever's on watch duty about monsters coming in. bells relevant because there's plentiful metal available here

probably the better call is that there's a nearby river, in the forest but not too far away, same as the ore depot. most old timey towns and villages were built on rivers, but in my setting villages are all in the protective aura of their crystal, which was not placed by human intentions. i will have to consider scarce water as a condition other towns can have.

owieee back hurts

I was putting away dishes (bending over and back up) and my back had a sudden pain, while i was moving but not doing anything extraordinary, that felt like a needle prick, or a pinch, or a snap, or an electric shock, very small and localized, but then the entire center of my back became very hurty like I had a pulled muscle or something. the pulled muscle sensation is not diminishing and in moving around since i occasionally get that sharp sensation again. am i dying?

game boy game packaging included a stylish "GAME BOY" and nintendo logo along the left edge. it takes up a lot of space and i'd have to redo it differently because it's using trademarks anyway. should i try to recreate it or should i just use the whole box for my box art?

think i'm gonna use Open Sans, which is OFL licensed (so i think i can use it in commercial projects) and matches the font pretty well. altho the M isn't slanted on the outer legs...
