My random thought of the day: do folks who do have a plan for getting those hard-to-see areas checked for suspicious moles?

On a related note, are there any on Fediverse? I’ve got a great idea for you.

@Alice Yeah after I posted that, I figured the collection gave it away that you knew what you were doing. Very clever. Lol

@futurebird Her remarks make it sound like a person can do as much child raping as they want as long as the economy is booming, I see no other way to interpret that. And TBF, that’s pretty much always been Turnip’s line of thinking. As long as I’m a success, I can do what I want, as evidenced in Access Hollywood tapes.

@scottmiller42@mstdn.social avatar

@futurebird I couldn’t watch more than a couple 30 second clips, but yeah, she was deliberately dodging any question of substance. The most deflection I’ve ever seen in a hearing. But I think that’s because she knows she’s only ever one follow-up question away from either perjury or exposing Turnip. Most infuriating was her refusal to even turn to victims and say “I’m sorry we’ll do better.” She didn’t even have to mean it, but she didn’t even care enough to pretend.

My company used to be a scrappy San Francisco tech startup but we were acquired by a large corporation so we had to switch from being Google people to Microsoft people and I'm in the process of creating a training deck in PowerPoint and I am seriously losing my mind with how Microsoft keeps messing up my formatting and how every little thing seems to take 5–10 times as many steps.

For example, I'll try to figure out how to do something that would have taken one click in Google slides and I'll figure it out, but it's like a seventeen step process in PowerPoint, so, when I’m done, I'll ask my husband who has been tortured by Microsoft for much longer if there's an easier way to do that thing and he'll inevitably be like "the way you did it IS the easy way to do it in PowerPoint/Word/whatever."

It's seriously like they clunked together some code and were like "well, it's at least kind of sort of better than a word processor?" and never bothered to improve anything.

@Alice Oh the hours I’ve wasted in PowerPoint trying to make something look good.

A couple tips:

When you want to make a slide similar to an existing, dupe it, then make changes. It’s almost impossible otherwise.

When replacing an element that you want to be the same dimensions, keep the old element, paste the new, make same size as old (it will snap when you get close), then send to back, and delete the old element.

While using the Wayback Machine the last few days, I've had a lot of "503 Service Unavailable" errors. I'm seeing those errors not just when archiving pages, but also when retrieving pages from the archive as well.

In the past, I've seen issues with Wayback Machine short-term corresponding to an event that would trigger a lot of archiving (example: a major government agency caught deleting web content.)

In , you could write sensible and transparent code, like this:

if (curNode):
curNode = curNode.next

But if you prefer something that is functionally identical, but harder to read, try this:

curNode and (curNode := curNode.next)

Follow me for more great tips on how to make life hell for the next person working with your code (which could be you).

    @nixCraft I sort of wish the answer is "there isn't one" and "that's why we have so many programming languages to choose from" and "quit fighting, kids, and go write some code".

    @nixCraft FWIW, some of that frustration happens to traditional coders with decades of hard-earned experience.

    Ever code a latent bug that was never manifest because your system never triggered the edge case before, but then you add a feature that hits that edge case and brings the bug front & center? You spend hours looking at the new code but can't find the bug? Only when you grind away, examining the existing code base, do you find the latent bug.

    Experience is a great teacher.
