uninstall workaround

I guess it technically is a workaround for problems with Windows to just uninstall it and use something else.

I think most Trump voters believed that tariffs were damaging only to foreign businesses and not domestic ones. They've been told in MAGA media that tariffs would bring jobs and make America rich enough to lower taxes, despite economists saying that this wouldn't work. They voted for it anyway, thinking they wouldn't get hit by tariffs, only to absolutely get hit by them. That sounds pretty LAMF to me.

Day 576 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

Today's game is Morrowind. I wanted to try mixing things up a little and had gotten this last december so i decided to dick around for a bit in it. I ended up being a little surprised by how much i enjoyed all the reading it needs. I mean, don't get me wrong. It's incredibly tedious and annoying sometimes, but it comes with ...

This, and in terms of repairability/sustainability, it's hard to make an "everything device" and do it well. Every time you think you got all user requirements covered, another user comes around the corner with a new set of hyper-specific requirements, and you're back at square one figuring out supply chains and design fundamentals. If your aim is to make something repairable and sustainable that is hard to make that way, it's much more feasible to just make two separate devices.

I mean, if showing pictures from your phone on a big screen is something you do so often that your phone absolutely has to do that and do it flawlessly, then yeah, I guess a midrange phone is not for you. But that's such a specific requirement, I can't exactly blame a company like Fairphone for not catering to those needs.

Most of my childhood memories have been saved on grainy, imperfect pictures and, yeah, I'm content with that and cherish them all the same (probably even more so, because that reflects the time in which they were made). If I want high-resolution photographs of something, I use a proper camera, but there's really nothing about "high-resolution" that implies "treasured memory" to me or vice versa.

Considering that even a midrange smartphone today is leaps ahead of "real" cameras from the past, I guess a different way to phrase your question is "Am I content to have my memories preserved with the image quality of a camera from 20 years ago?". And the answer to that would be a clear "yes". But to each their own.

I used to be able to just say "please download the materials from [learning platform] and organize them so you can work with them before class" and that would be fine. Nowadays I have to give step-by-step instructions that involve things like "create a folder", "navigate to your download folder" and "cut (ctrl-x) the files and paste (ctrl-v) them into the new folder" unless I want half the students to get lost.

Some don't even have a concept of downloading a file. They're so used to streaming and mobile UIs that they seem to think that a downloaded file is simply gone once you close it (and needs to be re-downloaded).

Here's the thing though. Democrats want this as an add-on to universal public health insurance, because health insurance is considered a universal right, and physical and health education help managing the costs. Republicans want it instead of public health insurance, because they consider staying healthy to be an individual responsibility that the state should not be involved in, and "just exercise and eat healthy" is their response to people complaining about cuts in the healthcare system.

rustydrd ,
@rustydrd@sh.itjust.works avatar

My point was that catching Republicans in this seeming contradiction isn't the "gotcha" that people think it is, because they advertise health and exercise for very different reasons, namely to strip away the last bits of public health insurance that Americans still have.

You're probably right in that the left is more united about reforming health insurance than Democrats are overall. But it's important not to miss the big picture.

First time making gimbap at home. This is a vegetarian version with fried tofu, egg, yellow pickled radish, spinach, cucumber and carrots. In case someone is interested, here are some pictures from the process:

Gimbap is Korean, but it seems plausible to me that sushi might have had an influence on it. But there are lots of differences between them. The rice is seasoned differently, and the fillings are more numerous and variable and also more focused on vegetables, both fresh and pickled, and usually meat (or tofu).

You can do them in a normal pan, too. Just have to make sure the batter is not too thick. And using one of these helps:

Rozell

rustydrd ,
@rustydrd@sh.itjust.works avatar

It's a rozell. It's used to spread out the batter in a circular motion. Not the easiest cooking utensil to use, but it does make for thinner crêpes. There's also another version of this tool that has a flat end piece and looks a bit like a small rake.

That distinction is completely valid, but I think it ultimately misses the point of the "sideloading" discussion.

I think no one would disagree that installing apps on mobile devices via ADB (Android) or Xcode (iOS) is sideloading. But if I toggle the "Allow installing from unknown sources" setting on Android and install APKs through F-droid and other means, is that sideloading? You say no, the Wikipedia article about sideloading says yes. That also circumvents security features of the OS to install software. The difference comes down to whether or not a mobile OS provides an easily accessible setting for developer tools that facilitates the installation of software from other sources to the point where it becomes possible to automate it in a store-like fashion. It's not a hard distinction and more like a continuum of how many hoops a user has to jump through to install and maintain software from other sources.

I think it's useful to think of the "sideloading" discussion mainly from this user-oriented perspective. The technical distinction of needing versus not needing a separate device is technically valid, but it misses the point IMO.

@rustydrd@sh.itjust.works avatar

Imagine having to drive 50m to do a U-turn. Literally communism, amirite?

But seriously, that's probably an intended feature, because people randomly turning into oncoming traffic is one of the main causes for accidents. Also note the double yellow line in the "before" image, so turns were prohibited even then.
