renzev OP ,

At this point I have completely given up on printer drivers. I just put files on a usb stick and plug it into the printer to print. Printer doesn't have that functionality? Oh well, it's as good as broken to me. Biking to the local library will take less time and kill less nerve cells than troubleshooting that piece of crap. I can only pray for people like you who have to work with this mess on the daily.

renzev ,

It’s far more racist to assume only minorities work for Door Dash

Yeah agreed. Racial profiling is still racial profiling, using euphemisms like "lower class" and "minority" instead of the usual slurs doesn't make it okay.

renzev , (edited )

Pretty sure there is a sizeable demographic of people who fantasize about falling in love with an elf precisely because their relationship would be like that of a pet and owner

EDIT why did I have to go and type that out. Cannot stop thinking about 1000 year old condescending dommy mommy elf GF now. fml

This is just the standard mac os experience to be honest

Two accounts on Reddit post 30%-50% of all content on r/conservative on a daily basis except one day when there happened to be a power outage in part of Moscow ( old.reddit.com )

I don't read r/conservative much but what I've seen is they keep banning actual conservatives because they correctly call out what Trump is doing on things where it's not about left and right but right and wrong. ...

Reminds me of an old soviet joke:

Q: Now that Stalin has died, what happened to his cult of personality?
A: The personality has died, that is true, but the cult lives on.

renzev ,

The original headline is "'No Way to Prevent This' says only country where this regularly happens". If you look closely at OP's meme, you can actually see the font changes after the "only" (baseline is slightly lower; uses lighter color; kerning of eve in "Prevent" is completely different )

But yeah shit take anyway, just because the US is famous for shootings doesn't mean that it's any more dangerous than other country

renzev ,

"Advanced Privacy" app on /e/-os (opensource android ROM) sends me occasional notifications about apps with most trackers haha. Also has a "wall of shame" (it's literally called that) where you can browse the worst offending apps

renzev ,

Just for anyone else in the thread: this doesn't work lmao.

I used to be depressed and anxious af. Took a break from uni, moved back in with my parents, went to therapy, got better, joined a book club, started hanging out more at social centers and talking to people, got a part-time job as a waiter, started working out and paying attention to my looks... still no gf. You can't become a successful person by merely going through the motions of what you think a successful person's life looks like. You can't cargo cult your way into happiness.

renzev ,

I personally pronounce it with a hard G even when talking about the mythical creature because that's how it's pronounced in most other languages that have a similar word. Anglos can go fuck themselves with their needlessly complicated phonetics.

renzev ,

IMHO the only reason to go above 60Hz is for better responsiveness in competitive games. Otherwise it's just a meme, definitely a total gimmick on smartphones.

YSK: there's a browser extension called "SingleFile", which allows you to save any page into a single HTML file. ( www.getsinglefile.com )

It also works with JavaScript-heavy websites like Mastodon and Youtube, which the standard "Save Page" feature implemented in all browsers usually fails to save, though some features like collapsibles are missing.

renzev ,

Also recommending ArchiveBox -- it takes the shotgun approach to archiving websites, making snapshots with a bunch of different tools, singlefile being among them. You can use it as a one-shot command, or run it as a web server which provides a UI for archiving web pages. Linkwarden is similar.

renzev ,

Forgejo is an activitypub-enabled Git forge software, and codeberg is one of the largest forgejo instances.

Tangentially related, but git-annex, and, in particular, its sync subcommand are a great tool for storing files and managing git repos across multiple machines (and even just loose drives) in a "P2P" way without any centralised server

renzev ,

I sadly can't recommend any communities for this, but what I do know is that search engines have been basically useless for finding software alternatives for a while. Search results are just full of for-profit bullshit trying to sell you their stupid app or low-effort list sites like alternativeto.net. If I need to find an offline alternative to some specific tool, as ironic as it is, I usually just ask an LLM. They work pretty well as a sort of reverse-search engine for finding software based on a description of the features.

renzev ,

I personally like to listen to both sides of the story so that I can absorb 2x the disinformation

renzev ,

It depends on the phase. Sometimes you get constructive interference and they add up instead.

renzev ,

Didn't he already do that in his last term? I still remember the jokes people made back then, like "how can it be a terrorist organization if it's not receiving weapons shipments from the US government!?"

renzev ,

Huh? Is this a troll post? "slava ukraini" being a fascist slogan isn't even a tankie take, it's just a historical fact. Like, who even disagrees with this? It even says so on english-language wikipedia, which is like the most lukewarm non-controversial source out there:

In April 1941 in German-occupied Kraków, the younger part of the OUN seceded and formed its own organisation, called the OUN-B after its leader Stepan Bandera. The group adopted a fascist-style salute along with calling "Glory to Ukraine!" and responding with "Glory to the Heroes!"

renzev ,

Bandera's followers massacred civilians during WWII. No matter what label you stick on it, the ideologies of these people (and, by extension, the slogans they used as rallying calls) have no place in a fair society.

renzev ,

despite them often walking hand in hand.

Yeah that's the whole issue. You're telling me these "healthy patriots" could not find a SINGLE thing in the entire history of their country to be proud of apart from a slogan used by fascists?

Where I live (Netherlands) people often use the term "Polder mentality" to celebrate the people's historical ability to cooperate despite differences in opinion. This is what "healthy patriotism" looks like. If you instead go out of your way to praise the nation's "VOC mentality", people will rightfully look at you weird and maybe even call you out for glorifying slavery. Because an actual patriot would never be proud of slavery.

If I was a Ukrainian patriot, I would go out of my way to cut any association with the fascist parts of my country's history, not make it my main slogan.

renzev ,

The comment thread didn't mention Russia once. Rent free lmao.

renzev ,

No??? The post about a particular instance of the Lemmy federated link aggregator software?? What even makes you think I support putin? I see authoritarianism as threat, it's the main reason why I haven't moved back to Russia yet and why I'm actively looking to find potential other places to relocate to in case the EU continues its descent into authoritarianism. I can't even come up with a witty comeback here, I'm genuinely baffled by your train of thought. Though I guess your use of reddit-tier made-up "vocabulary" like "putlerite" proves that "thought" isn't something that happens in your head very often.

renzev ,

I'm having difficulty following. In your psychoanalysis of my comments, am I meant to be a russian bot or not? The two paragraphs seem contradictory.

For the record, I have to admit the "ukraine is full of nazis" narrative was tempting to me around the time of the euromaidan crisis. You know, when ethno-nationalist groups were playing a large role in the shaping of Ukrainian politics. But as time went on (and as I became wiser) it became clear that the image putin is trying to paint, of Russia sweeping in and "saving ukraine from the fascists" is a very distorted view of reality. I certainly did not believe any part of it by the time of the ukrainian invasion.

renzev ,

Fine, I'll bite.

It's not good that Putin commanded the russian army to invade ukraine under the pretense of "denazification". It wouldn't have been good under any pretense. Innocent Ukrainians are dying, getting injured, being displaced in the name of "nazis" that don't exist. Ukrainian culture is being erased in the flames of war. Russia's invasion of ukraine bears many characteristics of a genocide, and there is no denying that putin's army has committed and is committing war crimes. It's not justified. I believe that it wouldn't be justified EVEN IF Putin's false narrative of "denazification" was true. Not only Putin, but his entire chain of command, various pro-russian oligarchs, corporations, and individual soldiers are all responsible in some part for this travesty and, in a fair society, should be served justice accordingly.

How's that sound? Honestly I don't really care what that you think of me, this is just my personal opinion on the matter. It's what I tell my friends, coworkers, and people I meet at social functions (it seems my Russian accent often makes people yearn to know what my stance on the matter is, especially when they've had a few beers). I know it's not the most pro-Ukraine take out there, but what matters TO ME is that it is my genuine opinion and is consistent with my moral framework and understanding of reality. I really hope you can say the same for your opinion, even if it differs from mine.

renzev ,

That’s… putting it mildly. It was a straight-up landgrab, a classic war of aggression.

I'm not good with words haha. When it comes to difficult/sensitive things I sometimes fall back to caveman speak more or less (in any language). Sounds like you got what I'm trying to say tho, so whatever :)

song is a banger btw :D

Nvidia really be out there selling pickaxes during the gold rush. Or, more aptly, selling shovels during the digging your own grave rush.

renzev OP ,

which I sometimes need because sometimes I do feel real bad

I kinda get what you mean. Sense of belonging and communication with people who understand you is important, never sacrifice your community in favor of some ideological quirk! Sure, there are good reasons to avoid reddit and discord, but they're not good enough to cut yourself loose from people who make you feel like you belong!!

renzev OP ,

Yes indeed. It seems so far that the best defence is to join utterly unhinged communities and participate in degeneracy so severe that no publicly traded company would want to scrape you. Something something become ungovernable.

renzev OP ,

Cloudflare is harmful. Sure, maybe they're doing a Good Thing™ today, but who stops them from turning around and selling all of the data they proxy to AI companies tomorrow? There is rarely a good reason to use cloudflare. If you care about blocking bots, there are self-hostable tools like Anubis. If you care about hiding your server's IP, you can use a VPN that allows port forwarding or rent a VPS. Do not use cloudflare. Cloudflare should not be used. By using cloudflare, you surrender your digital sovereignty for a mirage of convenience and safety.

(Yes, I understand the irony of posting this from a instance that uses cloudflare)

renzev OP ,

IDK what you mean by "domain host" but the thing about cloudflare ('s most prominent service) is that it's essentially a voluntary MITM between you and your clients. They see ALL traffic going between your server and your clients. This is not normal. Normally traffic between server and client is encrypted with HTTPS. By using cloudflare's proxy your are adding a backdoor to that encryption. Your registrar cannot normally see this traffic. Your certificate authority cannot normally see this traffic without issuing a malicious cert. But cloudflare can. And, if they wanted to, they could even inject malware to deanonymize users, spy on journalists, steal data, etc. As a matter of fact, they already do, but instead of calling it "malware" they call it "analytics", so it's okay 👍

renzev OP ,

Sounds like a very elegant way to fuck over screenreader users

During my quantum mechanics course in year one of uni the lecturer spent the entirety of first lecture essentially ranting about how all of these "interpretations" of quantum mechanics are a complete waste of time with zero practical application. So you're not alone on this one.

EDIT wait no lmao the course wasn't even on quantum mechanics it was on electromagnetism, the lecturer just had a personal gripe against all this quantum bullshit lol.

Banned from community? Post score in the negative? What are the mods trying to cover up here?!

renzev ,

You know this will only make people want to dig deeper, right? Whoever is paying you off to pretend like nothing is going on should've really told you to use an alt or something.

renzev OP ,

I'm an /e/os user and all I can say is even though it sucks the least among its competition, it STILL SUCKS! Not to downplay the immense effort put in by the devs and maintainers of course. Providing a privacy-respecting phone OS to ordinary people isn't just a good deed, it's necessary for a vibrant and diverse digital society. But still, we can all strive for better.

renzev OP ,

I have fairphone, it comes with unlockable bootloader. Don't get the new ones tho, they suck. 3+ was the last good model before they drank the koolaid and removed the headphone jack.

renzev ,

Honestly idk why you're getting downvoted it has been public knowledge for YEARS that trump is a chomo. Anyone who is suddenly worked up about it only NOW is just following whatever the media wants them to think about, definitely worthy of the microwave soyjak png.

renzev ,

Unpopular opinion but games with community-driven multiplier (i.e. people hosting their own servers) is infinitely better than matchmaking multiplayer running on the dev/publisher's servers if only for the sole reason that players have a choice of what kinds of communities they want to build and what things other players should be allowed to do instead of being forced into a sterilized commercial monoculture. I should be able to say "KYS KYS" in game if the people I'm playing with are okay with it.

renzev ,

I love how new versions of the CLI have the result automatically update as you type. Nice to see people going above and beyond to make CLI's pleasant!

renzev ,

yeah honestly I don't really care much for AI art and I think the vast majority of it looks kind of creepy in the uncanny valley sense but at least I have the self-awareness to recognize that it is a personal preference. These anti-ai bros seem to have no distinction between "I don't like <thing>" and "<thing> is unethical" on top of being just generally insufferable pricks so I try to avoid them as much as possible.

renzev ,

It's sad how root is still required on many phones to reach full functionality, yet they makes you jump through hoops to get it.

On my phone I needed root to set a battery charge limit. The rom I'm using only added that functionality natively a few years ago. I still need root to make backups ever since google kneecapped ADB backup. Seriously, do they just expect people to not make backups of the device they use every day!?

renzev ,

I'm glad that it works for you but you have to know that it's not like that for everyone. Last time I tried using MTP I had to write a script that would call rsync in a loop until all files were transfered because every time like one or two files would just mysteriously not make it across the cable.

Also, not me personally, but some people have usecases like playing video files from their phone on their tv or sending files to a printer over the cable. This wouldn't work with MTP because most "dumb" devices like that don't support it

renzev ,

Can we stop with this subtle EU propaganda slop? I LIVE in an EU country and I have the exact same problem with modern movies. This has nothing to do with who gets to make the laws, there are only two reasons why everything needs subtitles now:

  • Because of advancements in microphone technologies, actors don't need to speak as clearly and are getting lazy as a result.
  • Movies producers are assholes who think that everyone has a 50000$ surround sound home theater system and master the movie soundtracks accordingly -- which makes explosions and action scenes sound WAY TOO LOUD on normal people sound systems.
