Composer and audio programmer in Rochester, NY | Lecturer in music tech and film/game scoring at SUNY Geneseo

For music, I use Max/MSP and Tidal Cycles/SuperCollider, as well as writing for acoustic instruments, and I like to mix glitchy, noisy, microtonal sounds with “cheesy” retro synths

For audio programming, I use Rust, C++/JUCE, and C, and I made my IndieWeb-style website with 11ty

I also like fountain pens, analog photography, and I'm getting into TTRPGs

I just realized the current stable version of Python is 3.14.1, which makes it Pi-thon

I like those color polls! I'm gonna do a slightly different one :em_rainbow: 👇

@Em0nM4stodon I'm very fond of magenta since it's an extra-spectral color. It's fascinating to think about how there's no single-wavelength magenta light, and in a sense, it only exists in the mind

I like what I've heard about Bonfire, and I like the emphasis on community-run servers over a central flagship server (e.g., mastodon.social), but this trend worries me a bit:

“…the movement of starting a new fediverse server was heavily tied to the Mastodon migration effect that started after Elon Musk took over, in the fall of 2022. After that period, much fewer communities have started a new Mastodon server. This poses a challenge for the approach of Bonfire: the Bonfire Social software is now officially released in a 1.0 version, but there is not a single publicly accessible server that runs Bonfire.”

Would people recommend using Rohrer & Klingner iron gall ink in a nice pen w/ gold nib (Pilot Custom 823)?

I've been really enjoying this R&K “Ebony” ink, and it would be nice to use it in my favorite pen. I hear R&K iron gall inks are pretty gentle and gold nibs are particularly capable of handling iron gall, but I want to be extra sure.

Also, the vacuum filler plunger shaft looks like stainless steel, so I would be worried about damaging that.

Today I'm discussing how algorithmic reverbs work using the popular “Freeverb.” I give details on feedforward/feedback delays and allpass filters, and I include a Max/MSP patch to play with.

Hope it's helpful/interesting to someone!

Black and white linocut print of a toad wearing a witch hat, in front of a large moon with some stars. Next to it is the lino block.

@vkc when I installed Debian I tried all of the interfaces that looked even remotely like what I wanted, and GNOME was by far my favorite. Especially on dark mode it just looks super nice, and it wasn't too hard to get it customized

@vkc I initially checked "no," but as I think about it, I think there's a difference for me between "feels aggressive" and "bothers me"

I wouldn't do it to someone else because I don't want to bother them, but if someone did it to me, at the current level/type of engagement I get, I don't think it would bother me. It would come across as a little aggressive though, and I think if I were getting any kind of regular harassment/reply guys (as I know many do), it would bother me

@vkc hard agree. I keep seeing articles claiming that workers need to stop being "scared" of LLMs or risk being left behind in the workforce, and that attitude is so tiresome

just realized i've had the mollywhite.net domain for over 10 years(!!)

related sneak peek into an upcoming piece: i firmly believe that if you're going to spend money on one thing online it should be a domain, particularly as online identity gets more fragmented. as platforms come and go, you can always find me there.

@molly0xfff nice! Yeah, I finally got my own domain at the end of last year, and I'm really glad I did it

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

    reillypascal ,
    @reillypascal@hachyderm.io avatar

@molly0xfff the main thing I miss is people actually going to a variety of websites. I remember when Wordle just came out (and wasn't owned by NYT) somebody said that if there is going to be a web3, it'll just be people actually going to websites again, like they were with Wordle, and that resonated with me.
