One of my best tools for fighting G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome) is finding videos of people using gear I already own and seeing the clever things they've figured out how to do with it.

Often makes me feel dumb for missing an option or use, but since I'm the only one in the room usually, no one knows really, and I learned something new.

oooooweeeee that's so true and nicely put.

so to get water up the hill i need to get on my bike and ride down to where the stream is, and if its been more than a few days i normally also need to prime the pump, which means standing in the stream, docking about with jubilee clips and hoses, and generally getting quite wet whilst trying to refit the hose to the freshly-primed pump.

however, i have one-way valves before and after the pump, so if its used regularly (e.g daily) even for a short time, the pump doesnt need priming and just works.

im thinking id like to try and set up a remote switch so i can switch the pump on from up the hill (250~m) away.

from the little i know, it seems like lora would be the way to do it, but is that as simple as grab a couple of arduino/nodemcu shields and [some computering] and then they talk to each other in an ad-hoc/p2p stylee?

initial skimming of the subject seemed to go on about gateways and frame windows or whatever. i can see the point if you have a bunch of devices out in the field but i only have one. or is this more like logging into a long distance wifi in terms of handshakes, protocols etc (i thought it was a bit more low tech)

we have plentiful power down by the stream thanks to a couple of solar panels and a couple of small lifepos (~100ah), so that isn't really a problem, i just need to get the two devices talking somehow.

being able to switch the pump from up here would mean i can top the tank up daily (maybe automated) which would keep the pump primed as well as relieving water anxiety, so would be a double win..

also there seemed to be different frequencies listed (kenneth), one in 433/868mhz and maybe something in the early 900s.

is there's a benefit to one particular frequency (e.g range)

i wonder if there would be a way to do it with a pair of walkie talkies otherwise 🤔

@basdriver I hadn't thought of an LED, though I just checked and my walkie doesn't have one. I'd been wondering if i could make it listen for a signal, or even just build a radio receiver for that frequency or something... tho that's quickly crossing into "Lora will be better"
