Earlier this year, I made two trips to Sudan, where a terrible civil war has displaced 14 million people. The state is absent, international institutions are weak. Outside powers, motivated by greed and nihilism, have stepped into the vacuum, amplifying the conflict. In Sudan, the liberal world order has ended, and nothing has replaced it.

    1. I've been thinking a lot about the structural issues that plague Western democracies. My particular focus is on as I live in and am staring down the barrel of a nasty presidential election

    Job 1 is to make sure is not relected.

    1. The good news on the economy has been coming for months. Most voters are not regular traders of economic news, the stuff is too dry and subtle for most

    Eventually the flood of good economic registers and is it continues, as recognition slowly takes hold. Yesterdays impressive job numbers will have registered favorably with more voters and claims of a poor are becoming increasingly less credible

    The notion that is immune from prosecution in a republic which champions the rule of law is patently absurd.
