I’m so glad I saved the Momofuku vinegar pickle recipe now that the Lucky Peach site’s gone. They are ridiculously good, and so easy to make. (I think it’s online other places but if you can’t find it let me know and I’ll post it)

Pork shoulder is the best. Throw it in a roasting pan in a 300 degree oven for five hours and it's not only delicious, it makes your house smell AMAZING for all five hours. You can also make it into any cuisine. Red roast pork for bao, cochinita pibil, for cuban sandwiches, or for pasta... you name it, it's infinitely flexible.

Yes, that's what we're having for dinner, and my house smells AMAZING right now.

This thread is so good. I’ve been thinking a lot about how we used to run Railsbridge and codebar in’s Savannah, and I’m excited about starting over with the Explorers and Builders Guild next month at the library.

This thread is a great reminder that coding for teaching is very different from coding for fun or for work (though some principles should be similar - it should be easily understood by any engineer on the team!).

Some days, I feel ancient. I was explaining OAuth yesterday and let slip that I was involved in getting AOL to implement OpenID, and then I had to explain both AOL and OpenID.

(I feel like I was a tangential accomplice in a lot of early web standards history - like, that time I helped kick off the rebellion that killed XHTML 2 at a cocktail party. Like, if someone made a movie about web standards from 2000 - 2010, a character actor you might recognize would play me and I'd be in the credits, but I'd have like one line and there's a good chance it would end up on the cutting room floor)

I finished another book! Ken Liu’s translation of Laozi’s Dao de Jing. I’m not sure I could tell you what Dao or De are after reading it, but I loved the experience of reading it. It was beautiful.

I love not having any analytics on my blog. It's like one of my favorite quotes (that I got from a friend, Coco Papy, and I have no idea who she got it from), "Other peoples' opinion of you is none of your business."

It's absolutely freeing. I'll try to do best I can to be as kind as I can be in every situation, apologize when needed, listen to feedback, and make things right when I can. The rest is trivia.

First thing with Procreate! Traced a selfie and played around with trying to color it… definitely scratches the art making itch! I’ll keep going… goal is to do a bunch of little illustrations for the blog and turn it into a design. No idea what that will be yet. But it’s fun!

I've now installed five or six different linux distros over the last few months and all of them have the same disappointing problem of maximal notifications enabled by default. It's super annoying and sometimes not intuitive to disable them, especially if you want to do so selectively.

It's easier to just turn on Do Not Disturb and carry on.

I have a new favorite game: proposing ridiculous trips to my wife and use her reaction to figure out what I could actually talk her into.

Tonight’s was to propose going to Scotland for Hogmanay, and then staying through Burn’s Night (which means staying for our wedding anniversary).

She laughed out loud right away, so I need to do some editing.

If you have a small art museum in your town, or in a town you’re visiting, go take a look. You never know what kinds of cursed objects you’ll find!

I got the flu, COVID and pneumonia vaccines yesterday morning. Yesterday afternoon I was meh. Today it feels like I’ve been run over by a truck.
