Looking into Github alternatives and just read (from the horse’s mouth) that Gitlab “has native AI at every step”.

I don't think that letting companies pay a reasonable price to use the platform for development of proprietary software would harm the primary goal of your organization.

Whether this is doable within the rules of a nonprofit is a legal question, which I am not qualified to answer.

I imagine there are companies willing to pay the cost of whatever additional infrastructure and maintenance is needed on your part in order to have their private repositories hosted. And this could help fund your primary objective of supporting open source projects.

    I agree that it's problematic that we don't have a way of knowing the scope of abusive posts.

    I haven't seen any of the abusive posts you are referring to. It would be easy to jump the conclusion that you are exaggerating the problem. But instead I choose to acknowledge that I don't know how bad the problem is.

    Part of me wants to know enough that I could have an informed opinion about those posts. But at the same time I don't want abusive posts to get more exposure than necessary.

    I won't claim to have a perfect solution to any of this. I am thinking that some sort of distributed moderation system with some statistics visible to the public might be part of a good solution.

    Somebody was responsible for revoking that developer's access once the contract had ended. That person was negligent.

    Honestly wondering if me being honest on job apps (saying yes to the disability question) is hurting me in this anti-DEI world.
    I am so much more than a disability, but are people now shutting me out for it?

    kasperd ,
    @kasperd@westergaard.social avatar

    In the past I have hired a person with disabilities. I would not rule out the possibility of doing it again in the future. It really depends on whether the person is fit for the job, and that depends more on what skills the person has than the disabilities.

    Have companies invited you to interviews while knowing about the disability? Or have they only learned about it during the interview and then never followed up after that?

    POLL (1 of 3):

    Would you describe yourself as an "artist"?

    kasperd ,
    @kasperd@westergaard.social avatar

    I didn't understand the question either. But I know that I wouldn't describe myself using terms that I don't understand. So I had to answer no.

    NVIDIA is about to lose 80% of its market share as the US government tightens its export control rules. The new rules put strict restrictions on Nvidia GPU exports that are currently used for AI. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2025/01/13/fact-sheet-ensuring-u-s-security-and-economic-strength-in-the-age-of-artificial-intelligence/ The rule will go into effect in 120 days from today. A select group of trusted countries, including Japan, UK, South Korea, and the Netherlands, will effectively be exempt from the export rules. More here https://www.theregister.com/2025/01/13/nvidia_us_ai_chips/

    @kasperd@westergaard.social avatar

    This raises so man questions.

    • How likely is this to go in effect? Won't Trump want to cancel it simply based on who made the decision i the first place?
    • Aren't the majority of those chips manufactured in Asia anyway? What prevents them from being shipped directly from manufacturer to buyer without being exported from US?
    • Why specifically an exemption for Netherlands? And what prevents them from being shipped from Netherlands to the rest of EU?
    • What can we read into a 4% drop in stock price when they are allegedly going to lose 80% of market share?
    • Who will take over the other 80%of the market?
    • And what do the rules say about GPUs used for their intended purpose rather than AI?

    As long as I have any say in the matter I am not going to let our customer service workers be replaced by AI.

    We are currently hiring new customer service workers. We hired one this week, and we plan to hire more soon.
