At the end of January we traveled to Lake Baikal with @bugaevc -- our first time there, and generally in such cold weather. Imagine plane landing at ~4 AM your time and the flight attendant announcing "Welcome to Irkutsk, the temperature outside is -40°" 😆

We were well prepared though and had a great time! Lots of gorgeous scenery and a huge variety of ice types and formations. 1/2

@YaLTeR damn, that looks like a unique vacation!

Did I miss something obvious, or it’s not possible to rearrange the screens spatially with Niri/DankMaterialShell?

I mean I have my external monitor to the left, and my laptop insists that it’s on its right.

@YaLTeR @thibaultamartin @algernon that would be amazing. That was one of the more annoying aspects of setting up niri. Also everything breaks of I unplug one screen and plug it back again

@YaLTeR @thibaultamartin @algernon let me try to reproduce it again when I am in front of a PC, but my monitors were swapped again, just like the behaviour without any config (niri thinks the left monitor is right and vice versa)

I think Cosmic has the right idea with a workspace-level Floating/Tiling switch.

If you try to use niri as a mainly-floating environment, you'll face lots of awkwardness: no edge half tilling, maximized windows are forced below floating, can't see all windows in the Overview. These are design choices that work well for mainly-tiling and not for mainly-floating.

Making whole workspaces floating lets you use floating-specific UX just on those workspaces. GNOME-style Overview, etc.

@YaLTeR i continue to not get this way of tiling. Maybe it makes more sense with a big 4k screen. But with two 1080p screens, edge snapping is just as comfortable for me.

I don’t know if installing Zirconium is the best thing I’ve done in a while or a terrible mistake.

Niri with DankMaterialShell is so incredibly pleasant to use. What have you done @YaLTeR

@thibaultamartin @YaLTeR so it works?

I tried it on GNOME Boxes last week and it didn't boot

@YaLTeR @thibaultamartin ah, should try that.

I honestly wonder VMs work so poorly. Maybe I am cursed, but even if I get them running, they tend to stop working after some while.
