While I'm not defending the exploitative nature of Canada's TFW program I'm also bothered by the premise that the kinds of companies, like Tim Horton's stores that use them, are somehow the backbone of a local economy and except for those pesky temp workers everyone would have jobs.

A quick service chain simply cannot be the center of your economic plan and laying the blame there ignores the reality of large capitalism needing workers that they have no responsibility for and offloading those costs onto the rest of society. These companies, that are given tax breaks to setup in your towns lay the basis for the devaluing of the rest of your economy and cultural plans.

So what do I tell my students? Give up and go home?

A graph titled "employee headcount among software developers, by age" from WSJ. For all age groups it grows steadily from the start at 2021 into 2023. From 2023 the line for the 22-25 category drops off sharply, nearly 20 percent into mid 2025. For 26-30 category it drops about 5% to the 2025. For the other categories it isn't as strong but is not specifically falling.

Today in 'Jeff got suckered into supporting a cat family with new babies by his wife & daughters', ep2.

My wife has discovered it is in fact two single moms with kittens and not a m/f pair. Our Tuxedo has decided the situation is just happening and has gone on with his life. Our #2 grey/white cat who follows my wife like a small toddler boy would has come down with a case of 'middle child' and is decidedly unhappy that he is not the center of attention :)

Episode 3 of "Jeff, 3 women and 9 cats" continues.

Our #2 cat, still suffering from 'middle child' convinced my wife he should be allowed again to "sleep" in our bedroom. We are immediately reminded of why young boys and young cats are similar;

When the kittens came there were two adults taking care of them. It is clear now that the other one was the mother. But wait! Somebody was also trying to sneak more kittens into my house. We estimate a couple weeks at best before this one pops too.🙀

The real question is, how orange are the new ones going to be?

Ep 11 of 'All good fur must come to an end'

Our kitten friends will be moving on in a couple of days to a local rescue charity to get fixed up and vaxxed and hopefully into great homes. Not looking forward to mommas yells as she notices they are missing. She, too, will leave a few days later once the milk production slows.

Ep 12 of 'how could you leave them?'

These two mothers, who we believe are mother/ daughter themselves, are some of the friendliest, welcoming cats we have ever met. They obviously had human friends before and know how to ask us for things and talk. That they were abandoned, while obviously pregnant, just feels so brutal. I always get that people have reasons, but if we had the space we would easily keep them ourselves.

Sleeping on the cool green cutting mat is white, brown with specks of orange cat.

Ep 14 of "less cats, more sads'.

Today 4 of the kittens moved out and there is much sadness from my wife and daughters. Sure it was fun but what they are feeling is empathy for the cat mother and siblings separated into new lives. We know that cats have feelings too and will wonder what is happening to their family.

Tonight we are sure the mother will be yelling out as the kittens don't return.

Ep 15 of "Too many cats, 3 is enough right?"

The group of 6, mother and kittens have been delivered off to the rescue to find permanent homes. Definitely quieter here for the moment. The group of 5 is still here and growing fast. Amazed by the speed kittens go at.

We managed so far to only keep one and here she is. Gives quite the chase to our hyper 3yr old cat.

I was once again mistaken for a bot, so here's a picture of me holding a snake. As far as I know, bots can't hold snakes. Not yet. We will be in deep trouble if they ever learn how to.
