The Green's candidate in the Gorton & Denton by-election was absent this week from canvassing; she was finishing a course of plastering (she is a working plumber);

now some are going to spin this as a problem for the Greens, but actually if I was them I would be pointing out that this is why Hannah Spencer is more like the locals than the flown-in other candidates.

Like many working people she has to prioritise keeping her skills up to date!

@ChrisMayLA6 Well, the William Hill odds (decimal format) are currently:
Greens: 1.40
Reform: 3.50
Labour: 9.00
(and several other parties >100) so the betting public seem fairly certain of a Green win !

As part of the Representation of the People Act, to arrive in the House of Commons today is both the manifesto pledge to reduce the voting age, and a move to ban political donations from companies unless the firms are owned in the UK and have some minimum level of economic activity in the country.

Its likely the persistent will find ways round the restriction, but it will make financial support from abroad for political parties more difficult, which is to be welcomed!

While aimed at China, the EU's (as yet only) proposed policy of requiring 70% of 'critical goods' to be manufactured in the EU, if enacted will have (yet another) negative impact on UK exports across the Channel, and compound the problems already caused by Brexit (and the failure of any real notion of a 'reset' with the EU).

Each year, its clearer that at the fork in the road that was the Brexit referendum, the Brexiters directed us down a cut-de-sac!

It seems to me a key reason we have the contemporary politics we have is that many (most) of our political class, no longer see public service as their primary motivator, rather they are seeking to build (political) careers.

They still might say they're motivated by public service, but its not their primary motivation.

Some of you might argue, ever was it thus; but there seem to be many more career politicians than those driven primarily by a desire to serve than there once were?

And, now, some decades later, I think his view has been vindicated; too often data & facts are dismissed in light of people's feelings (sometimes referred to as 'legitimate concerns'), stoked by a news media that seen investigation & fact-checking as too expensive and a political class that sees politics merely as an exercise in marketing.

The biggest Q.s in politics are related to Brexit:

How can Reform be so popular in polls given Farage's role in Brexit, now recognised widely as a disaster?

Given the disaster of Brexit, why is the Labour Party's relations with the EU still built on a mistaken expectation of continued entitlement?

How, can the UK ever recover from Brexit if we don't admit how much damage the disconnection from the EU has caused?

We cannot leave Brexit behind because its always there!

Private care providers make a profit which is often siphoned out of the country.

Defenders of private provision argue that this surplus comes from more effective/efficient care organisation (and is a 'reward' for that work).

Opponents see this as a draining of much needed money out of the care system with no real care benefit to clients, making this just cash extraction.

I prefer the latter, given the frequent treatment scandals in the private sector!

@ChrisMayLA6 It does feel like 'profit by cutting corners'.
If there was a miracle saving to be had from just organising stuff better, everyone (including the NHS) would do it.
Probably much cheaper to run health services that are 99% safe instead of 99.99% safe ...
But unless private medical service providers are getting prosecuted for their failures regularly, it's always going to look superficially cheaper.

after 4 years & having equipped a major unit for private patients Nuffield Health has sold back its lease on a Barts Hospital building in London & the facilities will now be folded back in to the NHS as breast cancer unit.
