Deliberately lived car free for 4 yeaes here in Australia, choose to live somewhere with better public transport and walking distance to shopping/services. Had a large shopping centre with doctors, dentist, chemist, groceries and a bazillion speciality shops across the road. Walking, PT, an e-scooter and bicycle were all we needed. I worked from home, my parter used her e-scooter for her 4km round trip to work. Busses really suck, they're what cities use when thy have run out of ideas, we used the light and heavy rail often.

Fuck cars :)

What advice or tips do you have which sound like nonsense but really work?

When I can't sleep, I turn around and sleep "upside down" - moving my pillows to where my feet were beforehand, and my feet to where my head was beforehand - and I stick with that for a week or so. It gives me a week or so without insomnia and then wears off, so I have to turn myself back around for the next 7-12 day period. ...

Simple advice that works. More people should try it.

Western US states fail to negotiate crucial Colorado River deal: ‘Mother nature isn’t going to bail us out’ ( www.theguardian.com )

But the river has been overdrawn for more than a century. As demand continues to grow, rising temperatures and lower precipitation caused by the climate crisis are taking an increasingly larger share of declining supplies, a trend only expected to worsen as the world warms. ...

This has been buikding for years though, they get just enough water to ignore it all, then take it to the brink again and their strategy is, we got just enough last tine it was desperate that this will be ok.

Has nothing to do with old men from the western world, it's young Fillipina's, from The Philippines, often rural (provincial).

Christian fuckery is ubiquitous and gets you a lack of sex education and access to birth control. Teens still want to fuck.

. I hate cars but most car fatalities are accidental not intentional.

Is it ? Using that logic, a drunk driver killing somone is an accident.

The continued city design of enshrining cars as the primary mode of transport is intentional, people voting for politcans who are car brained is intentional, driving a car knowing there is a not insignificant risk of killing or hurting somone is intentional. Knowing this, a traffic death is really just manslaughter

Back in the 70s the Dutch rioted to remove cars from streets becase they were "accidentally" killing children, that's the appropriate response to deaths of chikdren.

Plumbers, electricians, weapon factory supervisors, miners, grocery store managers.

Ok then

Is the best method still to dual boot?

No, the best method is Windows or Mac..

i didn't want to do that, so just i changed to Darktable. It's more ppwerful then LR but that power brings a bunch of differences.

I'd not say I get opinions from but some experts I watch, read, listen to to form opinions.

Professor Kevin Anderson, James Hansen and Will Steffan (RIP) (climate change)

Professor Brian Cox and Richard Feynman RIP (physics amd astro pbysics. I can listen to Richard all day :)

Sam Harris "philosophy" (he's also a neuroscientist)

James Galbraith, Yanis Varoufakis and Thomas Piketty (Economics)

Against who ? The only country with the ability to attack us are the US and China, nothing we can do will stop either of them. Our defence force is mostly dick waving theatre.

We have zero strategic petroleum reserves and no electrified rail transport system to speak of for logistics. They don't need to attack us, just starve us of petroleum products for a couple weeks and we're fucked. We have a total of two muntions factories. We are closing or jabe closed the WW2 dry dock near Brisbane which seems stupid.

Joining the EU and then trying for NATO membership might be one possible way foward. Starting from scratch with some sort of mutual defence Asian pact might work, Japan, Canada etc but then if Canada is invaded by the US what then ?

The US is probably our greatest threat, China not so much.

hanrahan ,
@hanrahan@piefed.social avatar

Like the IS Government? Fuck 'em

hanrahan ,
@hanrahan@piefed.social avatar

Short version - there's too many elderly people in China and not enough working age so the economy is suffering

More children is never the answer becase all that does is kick the can down the road, in 30 years time they'd have 3 billion and a shit ton more elderly, so wjat then doibke down and make even more kids ?

We can already see if we empower women and let them choose they'll mostly have 0,1 or 2 kids. The only other solution is to force women to breed and have no choice (religious scum fuckery). Even the nordics with way better supoort for women and childbirth etc are still less then 2.1

We're better off learning lessons from xenophobic counties like Sth Korea and Japan and seeing what solutions work in regards poulation degrowth, becase every country will eventually face this issue

This contlstat framing of less people on the planet as a bad thing is ridiculous, should we have 1000 billion and all stand shoulder to shoulder ? How tobdecide ? there is some sort of sustainable level, why not let those expert in the area advise us ? if you do that, the number is less then a billion. Classical and neo liberal Econonics should play no part in the debate.

To give this some context, to be in the richest 1% for income, you need to earn about $80k USD equivalent per year or have a net wealth of about $1.2Million USD equivalent.

https://daadscholarship.com/how-much-money-need-to-earn-to-join-top-1-of-the-world-in-2025/

Our annual emissions per person for a sustainable emsiions budget is aboit 2-3t per year. Mostly were relying on the poor to do their bit eg the average Ethipoan emits aboit 0.2t per year. The average American about 15t.

Anyone who owns a large dog, or flys, or eats lots of beef, or drives a car is emitting morw then theiir share

We could start by banning all flying.

As Professor Kevin Anderson has talked of often, if we had the richest 10% live like the average European we could cut emissions by 40%, not enough but a good start and could be easiely implemented in a month.

Everything ? I though MS Office woukd fail becase no one will want to close source their data files, i was using an Amiga at the time at home and the file format was standard and you chose the app to use

It started there and just progressed, Apple was a big one, people won't buy into their closed wall'd shenanigans. Wrong again.

Messaging, what a debacle that has turned into. I assumed the system would be standardised and the fight would be over the front end for interoperability, wrong again.

These are Cipolla's five fundamental laws of stupidity:

  1. Always and inevitably, everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.

  2. The probability that a certain person (will) be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

  3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.

  4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places, and under any circumstances, to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

  5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

I'd not used Reddit for many years, before I actually made a Lemmy account, then when I saw Boost was available for Lemmy, I started using that.

I am odd though, old and have a differnt view of the internet based around it being a space for enthusiasts and tinkerers and corporate can and will only ever eventually enshitifiy whatever their fingers touch, so I dont use things like FB, Reddit, Apple products, Microsoft products, WhatsApp, Insta, Light room etc
