The LLM discourse on the Fediverse has really irked me the last few days.

Refusing to read writing made with the use of LLMs and refusing to give time to writers who use, promote or justify the use of LLMs is not purity culture, it's a boycott. It's a political act of withdrawing my time, resources and support for something that I find deeply morally wrong. It's protest. I have a choice and I refuse.

LLMs are exploitative, destructive, biased, mediocre parroting machines. Using them has a negative impact on the climate, the arts, the quality of the internet, the job market, the economy, the accessibility of electronics, even on skill development, creativity and mental health. LLMs are made and trained on the unpaid labour of millions -if not billions- of people who didn't consent. Their generic output litter the path to finding anything by true human creators.

Wherever I can, for as long as I can, I reject LLMs and anything that is related to them. I'm boycotting.

@reading_recluse Our refusal to engage with or become in any way reliant on LLMs is also a conscious effort to run out the clock.

Tech giants are trying to crowbar "AI" into everything right now, because they need to make these services indispensable for society at large. This way our leaders might not have have a choice, but to bail out or otherwise coddle the industry once all this circular financing comes crashing down as it inevitably must.

Alright. So today I am going to see if I can get my Windows 10 machine set up for another year of security updates. And I am going to see if I can do it without:

  • Changing my local login to log in with a Microsoft account,
  • Signing up for OneDrive,
  • Signing up for any paid XBox service,
  • Moving to the EU.

("Moving to the EU" is actually a thing I'm potentially willing to do, but I don't think it's a process I can complete before next Wednesday when Win10 reaches the end of normal support.)

I am seeing a disjoint between the OpenGL code I understand myself to have written and the observable behavior of that code both on-screen and in RenderDoc. The disjoint is so large and bizarre I find myself questioning whether I even understand OpenGL's basic rendering model. OpenGL is the kind of API that I seem to find myself in this situation a lot even after having used it for like 18 years.

glennseto ,
@glennseto@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc A bit off-topic, but I'm curious if Vulkan is more pleasant to develop in, because it's newer. Or perhaps it's harder, because it's "closer to the metal"?

@mcc Of course.

glennseto ,
@glennseto@mastodon.social avatar

@WAHa_06x36 Thank you, this was basically what I was wondering about! I'm not at all experienced in that field of coding, but from the outside, "OpenGL or Vulkan" always seemed like a less than cut and dry situation.

@mcc I didn't mean to backseat-project-manage, but I understand how you might have interpreted it that way.

glennseto ,
@glennseto@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @WAHa_06x36 No suggestion intendeded, hence my initial remark on going a bit off-topic. So yeah, that's the stuff that's utterly fascinating when you have a robust understanding of how software comes together, but only very surface-level knowledge of a particular ecosystem. The way you phrased it, I suspect sendible use via middleware has not been as wide-spread as one would hope? Are many of those emulator devs basically crawling through broken glass to develop their backends?

    seeing pushback against procedural generation as a result of alleged "AI" and that's really fucking sad

    good procedural generation is hard. good procedural generation is bespoke and intentional. good procedural generation is artistic and creative. please don't lump it in with the slop generated through machine learning 😞

    EDIT: procgen is not AI, it's a 40+ year old game design technique, see: https://peoplemaking.games/@eniko/113158903401769257

    glennseto ,
    @glennseto@mastodon.social avatar

    @eniko The current hype machine hasn't just subsumed seed-based procedural generation, but also genuinely useful applications of machine learning, e.g. fan-made upscales of PS1 era pre-rendered backgrounds.

    Those folks don't just press a button, but spend untold hours fiddling with the algorithms, redrawing signs and transparency maps, maybe add a shader or two to tastefully blend polygon models into the world ... artisanal work doesn't just go away if you want quality.
