I will soon have to choose a new PhD student and I will have several online interviews. For those who have experience with this, what are in your opinion good question to ask a student to see if she or he has the motivation to go through with a PhD, has the ability of reflection necessary, and is able to think through complex processes. So basically, questions that are not specific to the topic of the PhD, but give hints who could drive the PhD to a successful ending. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

@olibrendel academicchatter@a.gup.pe icon AcademicChatter group for online interviews of potential grad students, I send ahead of the meeting a recent, relatively broad/general audience/undergrad-friendly paper for us to chat about. I like this approach because it provides a tangible “thing” to structure the interaction and helps me get a semi naturalistic sense of how they reason

Reminder that intolerance of intolerance is not a paradox. Tolerance is not an absolute ethical stance, it is a social contract. If someone chooses to not participate in the social contract of tolerance, they do not get to benefit from it.

Generating cautionary tales of "don't trust LLMs to write code without knowing what you're doing," when I asked (our paid institutional version of copilot) to convert a score to a percentile based on a known mean and standard deviation it gave me:
percentile = (score - mean) / std * 10 + 50

I am going to be organizing my area’s journal club (personality psychology) and have quite a bit of flexibility.

Any suggestions? What do you like or would you want to see? @academicchatter
