“Virgin River, Zion Canyon” — The Virgin river flows past trees and sandstone formations, Zion National Park.

Judging from the muddy water, a substantial amount of Utah landscape appears to be disolved in the Virgin River and flowing out of the park! A walk through the bottomlands of Zion Canyon reveals a riparian landscape subject to periodic flooding. Seeing this, you can begin to understand the role that water has played in forming this remarkable landscape…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/01/09/virgin-river-zion-canyon/

“Boulders and Autumn Forest” — Fall colors in a conifer forest along the banks of the Merced River, Yosemite Valley.

While there is fall color in Yosemite, it is not widespread, and it comes in bits and pieces rather than hillsides blanketed in color. This scene is a case in point. The great majority of the trees here along the Merced River are conifers. But deciduous trees are scattered though the forest. Here they include three major sources of fall color in the Valley: A big leaf maple, a dogwood, and a black oak…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/11/23/boulders-and-autumn-forest/

“House with Blue Trim” — A white hour with blue doors, Casals de Loivos, Portugal.

This past May we spent a week on a walk through the hills, villages, and vineyards of Portugal’s Douro Valley, completing a large loop that began and ended in the town of Pinhão. We walked every day, and stayed each evening in various local accommodations. The last of those was in the remarkable little village of Casals de Loivos, perched high above the Douro Valley…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/08/23/house-with-blue-trum/

“The Point” — Four tourists looking up, Bruges.

This is one of those “shoot fast” street photography images that I sometimes like while traveling. It happened so quickly that I barely remember the act of making the photo. My recollection is that we were walking along a street in Bruges, Belgium when I spotted this group and fired off a frame. I think there might be several ways to “see” this image…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/06/26/the-point/

“Corkscrew Peak, Evening” — Evening light on the giant alluvial plain leading up towards Corkscrew Peak.

This peak has long intrigued me — along with the entire ridge that it lies on. Perhaps the name first caught my attention when I was trying to identify landmarks in photographs I took from out in the Valley. Hint: it does not really look much like a corkscrew, though I can see how the tilted rock layers that seem to run around it inspired the name…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/06/05/corkscrew-peak-evening/

“Badlands Detail” — Photograph of details of badlands gullies in soft morning light, Death Valley National Park.

The pink color of the formations in this photograph was a big part of its appeal. It was early morning, and the direct sunlight had worked its way back across the valley to the tops of ridges nearly, and the light’s warm color washed over the nearly-white material of these ridges and valleys. Again, the Death Valley landscape, which can be rather subtly colored, served as a canvas for the effects of colorful light…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/05/05/badlands-detail-2/

“Mesquite Plants, Dunes” — Mesquite plants growing on sand dunes, Death Valley National Park.

Mesquite manages to survive and occasionally prosper in very unlikely conditions. This thriving instance is growing in the middle of dunes in Death Valley, not exactly the most friendly environment. In the dunes, isolated clumps of vegetation like this create their own little ecosystems. The plants interfere with the windblown passage of sand, and in their shelter you can often find evidence of animal life — insects, lizards and snakes, occasional tracks of small mammals…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/29/mesquite-plants-dunes/

“Passing Cyclist, Le Marais” — A bicycle rider quickly passed at a cross street in Le Marais, Paris.

I often ponder the similarities and differences among the various genres of photography I pursue. (If you follow me you have seen everything from landscapes to night photography to street photography to travel and more.) The connection between landscape and street photography especially interests me, partly because many people think of them as being utterly different. I think that there are some similarities. For example, I often think about the street landscape first, and then wait and watch for someone to animate it.

That was the case here. I was interested in the wall at the end of this narrow street, and the way that its view is bounded by the darker walls on either side. I knew that I could photograph people as they passed by…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/28/passing-cyclist-le-marais/

“Desert Mountains, Evening” — Desert mountains tower above a huge fan and hills, Death Valley National Park.

First days in Death Valley are always a bit of a challenge. The day typically starts before dawn with a very long drive from the San Francisco Bay Area. It is at least mid-afternoon by the time I get to the park and find a campsite, and it takes an hour or so to get things set up. By this point evening isn’t that far away, so I usually pick a fairly reliable location for the first evening shoot. (I come back to camp for late dinner after dark.)…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/27/desert-mountains-evening/

FWIW, this post is an experiment in automatic reposting of new entires at my wordpress website. It works… OK — though I prefer to actually include the full image with posts. Perhaps there is still a way to do that…

Jetpack (a set of wordpress add-on) now includes this on its “Social” page in the admin settings. Linking to Mastodon is pretty simple and the re-posts can be automatic.

“First Light, Panamint Mountains” — The first sunrise light on Rogers Peak and the Panamint Mountains, Death Valley National Park.

How many times have I watched for this first light as it touches the peaks and ridges of the Panamint Mountains before working its way down to the floor of Death Valley? I have no idea, but I’ve been going there for something like 25 years now, so it must be quite a few times! It never gets old…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/23/first-light-panamint-mountains/
