I don’t know who needs to hear this right now but that new productivity tool you’re thinking about buying / subscribing to won’t make you any more productive than you are right now if you’re not going to just do the work.

@Daojoan @ELS No. Nononono. You can pry my productivity tools from my cold, dead hands.

Meta did this? Mastodon gGmbH’s partner Meta at the Social Web Foundation?

But aren’t Mastodon gGmbH the good guys? I can’t see how they’d ever partner with Meta if this were true.

No, no, this must be fake news.

(Otherwise, what would it say about Mastodon gGmbH and the Social Web Foundation?)

“A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.”

@CiaraNi @aral I have the same thought in my darker, more cynical moments: the planet would be better off without us.

I had to put my dog down two days ago suddenly, and I'm still kinda broken.

He got me though the darkest times of my life, he would sit and watch me code for hours every night, building @pixelfed

We had so many amazing times together, but I can't help feel guilty and blame myself for not getting him help sooner.

I'd trade everything, including the kickstarter and grants just to have him back. He was my everything.

Give your puppers a big hug for me, they love us so much ❤️

@dansup @SETIEric @pixelfed 😢💔 Dogs are everything. I’ve been through the same and feel that pain.

Musk has become the very definition of a foreign insurrectionist. He is attempting to use his money and influence to destabilise the governments of countries other than his own, and should be subject to the same sorts of sanctions and restrictions as Russian oligarchs.

Starmer condemns ‘lies and misinformation’ as he hits back at Musk https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jan/06/starmer-condemns-lies-and-misinformation-as-he-hits-back-at-musk?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

@aral Yes, there is that. Until ol’ Donald starts to realise Musky’s stealing his spotlight. Oh, it’ll take a while because Musk owns his ass, but still. It’ll go sour with a bang.

Writer Kelly Stout coveted Vitsœ’s 606 Universal Shelving System, which she describes as "the Grand Poobah of modular track shelves," but couldn't justify the cost. She writes for @Dwell about how she created her dream book wall using a different system. "The whole setup somehow manages to produce a 'status bookshelf' without making the owner look like the type of person who cares about such a thing," she says. What's your philosophy on book storage?

My philosophy? I need more shelves! Those Elfa ones might just do the trick if I completely redo my office / den / storage room…

@Downes @fgraver @actualham @harmonygritz @kate @cogdog I'm happy to get into detailed policies. I started with nations and one policy proposal as a first order attempt to get at what you're thinking.

fgraver ,
@fgraver@hcommons.social avatar

@bryanalexandee @kate @Downes @actualham @harmonygritz @cogdog Sometimes it seems to me that 40 years of utilitarian neoliberalism have succeeded in turning the focus of higher education away from critical thinking and analysis and towards job training. We no longer serve humanity, or even society — we serve the needs of employers. There are still some oases of critical thinking with an idealistic emphasis on serving a greater good, but they are disappearing as fast as languages and humanities programmes…

Here in Norway, successive governments, both centre-left and centre-right, have worshipped at the altar of New Public Management, where only the things that can be quantified and measured count. It is a malaise affecting all aspects of society, and colleges and universities are far from immune.

@fgraver@hcommons.social avatar

@bryanalexandee @kate @Downes @actualham @harmonygritz @cogdog I should add — I am very aware of the fact that the origins of higher education are all about preparing students for careers, from schools for prospective bureaucrats in ancient China, Hindus Valley, and Mesopotamia, to the origins of European universities as training grounds for lawyers and theologians. But ever since the origin of Humboldt University, higher education has been about more and has taken a broader view of being for the good of society. Neoliberalism in HE has been regressive.
