I wish I could take actual classes with exercises and a professor to whom I can ask questions instead of reading books on my own (and posting).
Unfortunately i am a literature student with a low gpa and also they dont offer those classes here

my problem so far is that every text I've read front-loads a bunch of definitions in the void which makes it difficult for me to actually latch onto anything I can do. im moving forward and its cool but there has to be a better way to teach this!!

like, look at this:

The functor category [C, D] is sometimes denoted DC . If C is small and D is locally small, then DC is locally small (in fact, Hom(F, G) is the set of all natural transformations F ⇒ G).

What is small and locally small? It's explained in a note at the beginning:

Note that we allow the collections of objects and morphisms to be proper classes (not necessarily sets), but in practice many categories of interestare locally small, meaning C(A, B) is a set for all A, B.

Great. Awesome! This means nothing to me. what the fuck is a proper class. why do we care about this right now. you just gave me a random property with no grounding!!! why!!!!! we dont use this at all!!! im sure this is going to be useful in the future but right now it's not relevant, it's just stuff I have to hold in my mind in case it becomes relevant later (it doesnt in this book)

Apparently my computer has been moving shit in and out of swap so aggressively that it's ended up completely slowing the system to a crawl. Just disabled swap (16/16gb used) and everything's moving to ram (5/16gb used before) let's see what gets killed lol

@stellarskylark fun little fact! The history of weaving and the history of language are intimately twined, hence expressions like weaving a tale or spinning a yarn. I forget which language/speech/writing–related terms also have textile-related etymologies, but there are some!!

dont use computer obsoletist language!

instead of saying: I need to buy more ram

try: I need to get four or five trash laptops on which to run a distcc cluster

instead of saying: I should get a new laptop

try: I need to install gentoo and optimize all my packages with my distcc cluster

instead of saying: maybe it's time for an upgrade

try: modern software is bloat anyway

instead of saying: ah fuck my laptop has become completely unusable

try: wonderful! a new addition to my distcc cluster

BATEMAN: New sandwich. What do you think?

McDermott lifts it up and examines the bread carefully.

McDERMOTT: Whoa. Very nice. Take a look.
He hands it to Van Patten.

BATEMAN: picked up the jam from the store yesterday.

VAN PATTEN: Good coloring.

BATEMAN: That's raspberry. And the bread is something called whole weat.

McDERMOTT (envious): whole wheat?

VAN PATTEN: It is very cool, Bateman. But that's nothing.

He pulls a sandwich out of his brown paper bag and slaps it on the
table.]

VAN PATTEN: Look at this.

They all lean forward to inspect it.

PRICE: That's really nice.

Bateman clenches his fists beneath the table, trying to control his anxiety.

VAN PATTEN: crunchy peanut butter with grape jam.

(Turning to Bateman)

What do you think?

BATEMAN (barely able to breathe, his voice a croak): Nice.

PRICE (holding the sandwich up to the light): Jesus. This is really super. How'd a nitwit like you get so tasteful?

Bateman stares at his own sandwich and then enviously at McDermott's.

BATEMAN (V.O.): I can't believe that Price prefers McDermott's sandwich to mine.

PRICE: But wait. You ain't seen nothin' yet.

He holds up his own sandwich.

PRICE: Roasted honey peanut butter, cherry jam on baguette...

BATEMAN (choking with anxiety): Impressive. Very nice. Let's see Paul Owen's sandwich.

Price pulls a sandwich from an inside coat pocket and holds it up for their inspection.Bateman swallows, speechless. The sound in the room dies down and all we hear is a faint heartbeat as Bateman stares at the magnificent sandwich.

BATEMAN (V.O.): Look at that subtle off-white toasting. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it's even cut into triangles..

His hand shaking, Bateman lifts up the sandwich and stares at it
until it fills the screen. He lets it fall. The sound returns to normal.

CARRUTHERS: Is something wrong? Patrick...you're sweating.
