I just read this blog post, about how the techbros embracing fascism and AI makes a programmer lose "their tribe".

https://ratfactor.com/tech-nope2

Tbh I've always felt this way. I've been somewhat of a "professional web dev" for almost 25 years now, but never felt I had to mindlessly adopt whatever hype the industry was on.

I've never been to a conference. I'm not really excited to meet fellow web developers, because a lot of them are quite deranged haha

console ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

@Tijn

That was a good read, and interestingly a disconnect I did a long time ago, or I maybe even something I never joined.

> That lost identity was "computer programmer"

Like you, I am a loner in my craft.

I attended a single conference, which was enough for me to understand that its main purpose was to present arguments to influence a company’s decisions. It's like using a bazooka to shoot a sparrow. A simple YouTube tutorial or a how-to on the web is perfectly sufficient for me.

console ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

@Tijn Networking in places like that is just bizarre. I don't need to find like-minded people to decide that Framework X is good for me. If it fits and is practical, I use it.

I've also never been part of a fraternity either :P

console ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

@Tijn But while reading, I noticed how similar the parallels to gaming are.

I can't really identify with “gamers” anymore either, because everything is just a hostile pool of toxicity.

@lritter Restless sleep is the worst. Not only do you feel shit, you also spent 6+ hours for nothing in return.

Since I was doing raylib work in c/c++ I took the time to set up VSCode to compile and debug. Its not as good as Xcode but it very useable. It will make my transition to Linux easer. Next step is buying a good laptop. My old Linux one is dead.

console ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

@grumpygamer I code on multiple operating systems and it's so liberating to have the same IDE with you, with different extensions/toolchains active. Even remote editing via SSH (it auto-runs a server component in userspace) is fantastic.

Only 3 days left until Season 26 starts in Fallout 76, along with the new Burning Springs update.

The game is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I love the Fallout universe, and 76 has plenty of it.

@floooh I only played solo. For months. You can do everything alone, except two mechanics aimed at endgame group players: raids and expeditions.

PVP is off by default but there isn’t really any PVP gameplay except arranged duels. The community is super nice. Never had a bad experience.

Also, you don’t need the subscription, it only adds a few convenience features mostly related to weight/stash management. No need for that before level 100.

console ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

@lritter Yes :) That's true.

console ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

@lritter hehehe. The fact that I used both nicknames at the same time has indeed confused some people. I recently renamed a few older accounts over to console like Steam, Discord and Libera to simplify things.

Btw, here are the only two 3D-printed items in my home: a printing accident that happened to my daughter. It occurred during her 3D-printing summer camp, and we still think it turned into a pretty cool little figure.

console ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

@lritter By the way, I vaguely remember something. Some time ago, you asked who sent a package from Vienna. Was it about these prints?

If so, I might know who it was (but I forgot the nickname, haha).

I had the pleasure of taking part in the closed beta.

In this game, created by @grumpygamer and @vampiress , the world scrolls upward relentlessly as you battle through diverse, monster-filled environments. Every run demands choices: fight or dodge, risk a quest item or play it safe.

Five unlockable heroes each bring unique skills and influence how power-ups appear across handcrafted, semi-random levels that lead to new camps and quests.

I've been trying to delete an account for months. The company is completely stubborn and requires me to scan my ID and send it by email (yeah, right) so they can verify my date of birth.

Last night, I had an idea. Social engineering deluxe: I simply replied to the ticket email: ‘Thank you for confirming my date of birth. Do you need anything else? Can you now proceed with deleting the account?’

And the reply: ‘Your account has been marked for deletion.’

WIN!

I still think about @christianselig 's move when he exposed that Reddit wannabe-musk CEO with the meeting recording after the clumsy (or frankly evil) attempt to accuse him of blackmail.

I mean, the Apollo app was ultimately discontinued, but David brought a slingshot.

A challenge when playing farming/life sim games with children is their lack of awareness of resources and inventory. Saving up for that one building that requires 10 rare pieces of lumber? Forget it, the child has gone off and completed a quest where she gave away those very rare pieces of wood as gifts to improve their friendship with some random NPC.

console OP ,
@console@mastodon.social avatar

That lumber stealing NPC is now willing to marry, btw. So that's a success.

@lritter Fae Farm. I talked about it before I think.

Cute, neat, surprisingly polished. Perfect for co-op. There are better ones like this, but we enjoy it and it's very accessibly with no friction.

PS: There's no marriage I think, that was a joke. But there's a relationship hearth-meter and it's maxed now.

@lritter It's the only game where my kids enjoys the fighting. She love kicking the shit out of mobs in the dungeons, but this is really the only game. I don't know why, everything else stresses her out like crazy. Maybe because it's so forgiving? The music? I think about it quite often but can't put my finger on it.

console OP ,

@lritter We play on the PC and Steamdeck.

console OP ,

@lritter She hates the Stardew Valley dungeons. When I enter in split screen she often has to leaves the room because she hates the SFX. But even muted she doesn’t enter the caves.

SFX: I suspect in this case that the mining .wav has too high frequencies that older people don't really notice. Like the god damn post-kill-beep in Halflife 2 that drove my cats up the wall.

> The most important testing we do is with testers who play the game all day long. They look at the Git history and see what has changed and beat on that.

My dream job, but who would pay for something like this? Humanity really needs an unconditional basic income. Games would be bug-free.

My kid (9) recorded her first serious song yesterday, multiple takes and arranged in GarageBand with separate tracks for keyboard-midi and vocals.

"It's like layers in paint programs”. Yup, yup.

But what makes me most proud is that she didn't use the iPad, but her MacBook. “Properly, like Bocchi in the closet.”

@grumpygamer I added Fastmail to the dock (PWA) and enabled notifications in Fastmail settings. You can close the window now and the icon will remain in the dock. You'll receive notifications as long as you don't Cmd-Q the new Fastmail.app

Safari doesn't need to be running.

FAQ:

Q: Why?

A: The sole reason for my move is that I enjoy following hashtags.

But on Mastodon, you can only see posts from other instances with hashtags if someone from your own instance follows the poster. With smaller instances, this means you'll only get washed ashore very little.

Q: So, how's the other side?

A: Crowded.
