You beat me to it! Tubthumping always gets me fired up

I was ready to see capitalism destroyed long before I realized I was a girl lol

Let them be alienated. Trans rights are human rights, and they’re non-negotiable. Trans people are such a small minority, our rights depend on cis allies being vocal advocates, even when it isn’t easy. Social progress has never happened by backing away from an issue conservatives are mad about and waiting for them to change their minds and come around.

compostgoblin ,

Jayapal and Markey are both long-time progressives without presidential ambitions, so I actually trust that they’re sincere on this one. I don’t know anything about Jacobs.

Any centrists like Newsom who think they might get the mythical moderate Republican vote by throwing trans people under the bus? I agree, I don’t trust an inch

Millions of student loan borrowers aren't repaying their loans — and defaults are up ( www.npr.org )

Roughly a million borrowers defaulted on their federal student loans late last year, with millions delinquent on their payments and sliding toward the same fate. That's according to federal data and the latest Household Debt and Credit Report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which dropped on Tuesday. The report ...

Is that common? I was kicked off the SAVE plan, so I had to re-enroll in an older IBR plan

I do not think that live-streaming executions will make our society any healthier.

Gorgeous! I love the color 😍

Everything is a distraction from everything else. I doubt any specific catastrophe is planned, particularly as a distraction, but the cumulative effect is deliberate. The faster they go and the more chaotic everything gets, the harder it is to stay focused to stop them. See Bannon’s “muzzle velocity” theory

If I took antidepressants for my Weltschmerz (world-weariness)... would I become a worse artist?

Weltschmerz (German: [ˈvɛltʃmɛɐ̯ts] https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/1/10/De-Weltschmerz.ogg/De-Weltschmerz.ogg.mp3ⓘ; literally "world-pain") is a literary concept describing the feeling experienced by an individual who believes that reality can never satisfy the expectations of the mind,[1][2] ...

Absolutely not! I have always found that my creative output has been at its best when I’m at my most mentally healthy.

I have some ideas about how to make them enjoy themselves less

Ron Swanson says trans rights

compostgoblin ,

I don’t use them often, but I think they’re still useful. Mostly at work meetings and when I’m at conferences, exchanging business cards is probably the easiest way to quickly share contact info

compostgoblin ,

So should they just stay in a job they know is wrong?

compostgoblin ,

By building a movement that demands it

compostgoblin ,

What was wrong with a $10 shovel?

compostgoblin ,

Yeah, that’s fair. Snow blowers as a personal purchase have always felt silly to me, since if needed you could always pay for a shovel/plow service that just come when it snows, so you don’t have an expensive appliance sitting around that might barely be used. Now I’m wondering what the cost comparison would look like between the two. I suppose it depends on how much snow you usually get

compostgoblin ,

That would be a great application for it! Okay, I’m swayed in the other direction. For stuff like schools, churches, etc, I can see it making sense. Especially if the machines aren’t hard to maintain.

If my birth state won't allow me to change the gender marker on my birth certificate, what do I do?

I haven’t updated any of my documents yet, and I saw that the disgusting bill that’s pending in Indiana would make it impossible for trans people to change their gender marker. Although there has been an executive order stopping the department of health from processing court-ordered name changes there for the past year. I ...

compostgoblin OP ,

Yeah, I’ve had that thought too - probably better to keep a low profile right now.

On the other hand, although I don’t pass now, if I do eventually, I don’t want to out myself to every cop and TSA agent, you know?

I have some French Canadian ancestry, so I’m working on applying for my Canadian citizenship by descent. (Maybe another reason not to mess with my documents rn?)

Blessedly, I’m no longer in Indiana, and Michigan has much better civil rights protections for trans folks

compostgoblin OP ,

Well fuck. I am intrigued by the notion of changing the name only when I can’t change the marker, and then updating both anywhere else where I can. I wonder if there is any legal assistance nearby that can help me with the nuances of the forms and stuff

compostgoblin OP ,

Both, depending on which document. Usually changing your birth certificate is the first step, and those are held by the state health department in the state you were born in, regardless of where you live now. Your driver’s license, though, you change with whatever state you’re currently residing in that issued the license. And then your passport is dealt with by the federal government. It’s a mess lol

compostgoblin OP ,

Oh, you’re totally fine! AFAIK, your birth certificate stays with the state you were born in, with no way to transfer it elsewhere. I’ve heard of people in a similar boat to me who were further along changing their docs, but their birth state wouldn’t cooperate on the birth certificate

That’s a good question about moving out of the country though, I’m not sure. Since I’d get my citizenship certificate now, as an adult, I would guess that I’d just need to update the gender marker on my Canadian citizenship certificate, and then who cares what the US thinks.

I really don’t know though, I think that’s a bridge I’d cross once I manage to get my citizenship in Canada

compostgoblin OP ,

Would Europe allow a study visa for someone who already has a degree from the US? Unless I go for a PhD, it would be my second go around in university

compostgoblin ,

I’ve been on the Fediverse since mid-2023, and I’m sticking around!

I bailed on Reddit, FB, and IG, and I’m only on Mastodon and Piefed now. I find that not being on algorithm-driven social media makes me less angry, and I have a much easier time avoiding getting caught up in a mindless scrolling marathon.

I like the ability to filter out by keywords, it makes for a much more pleasant experience

As far as improvements, my main complaint is that I wish there were more people and that the people who are here comment more. Bigger isn’t necessarily better, but there are a lot of communities that just don’t have enough people posting and commenting to make things feel lively yet.

Indiana bravely forges ahead in its quest to become the worst state in the nation. I’ll never regret fleeing for a state where I actually have rights.

Meet UpScrolled, the anti-censorship TikTok alternative ( restofworld.org )

Within hours of the deal for TikTok’s U.S. operations being announced last week, Issam Hijazi noticed a big uptick in users to his social media platform UpScrolled. That stream of disgruntled users fleeing TikTok over censorship concerns turned into a flood this week, crashing UpScrolled’s servers. ...

They’re already banning trans women just for being trans

compostgoblin ,

I saw a post on Mastodon about it, but a cursory search didn’t turn it up. I’ll look a bit more later and see if I can find it

compostgoblin OP ,

Why do you say that?

compostgoblin OP ,

Borders are intrinsic to humanity? Citation extremely needed.

In the US, we had open borders for a long time, and there are many places in the world currently that don’t have border controls. Capital flows freely around the world, why shouldn’t people be allowed to?

And respectfully, you don’t know the extent of my activism based on one meme I shared. I advocate for many things. And for what it’s worth, I think it’s more likely that strict borders would be a contributing factor leading to a WWIII. All the more reason to get rid of them.

Bada bing bada boom

compostgoblin OP ,

Oh friend. I suggest you educate yourself, you don’t know how wrong you are.

During the 18th and most of the 19th centuries, the United States had limited regulation of immigration and naturalization at a national level. Under a mostly prevailing "open border" policy, immigration was generally welcomed, although citizenship was limited to "white persons" as of 1790, and naturalization was subject to five-year residency requirement as of 1802. Passports and visas were not required for entry into America; rules and procedures for arriving immigrants were determined by local ports of entry or state laws. Processes for naturalization were determined by local county courts.[1][2][3]

In the US, you usually only get paid time off if you’re in a full-time, salaried position. Even then, most people only get two or three weeks, and it accrues over time, so you have to save it up for winter holidays, etc

compostgoblin OP ,

Oh yeah. That was a weird feeling. Like “I’m definitely attracted to girls, but not in the way it seems like other guys are?” Honestly, should’ve been a clue that I wasn’t cishet long before i actually put the pieces together lol
