Hurricanes begin in a place where no one lives. Agents of the government start to wear masks. Fascism is a word my neighbors won't use yet. Hey, remember that time in 1938 when Britain's Neville Chamberlain met with Adolf Hitler and, being convinced that ol' Adolf just wanted Czechoslovakia and nothing else (despite the anchluss of Austria a few months before), signed the Munich Agreement, which basically allowed the nazis to invade Czechoslovakia?

And then Chamberlain returned to England having just signed the Munich Agreement and told crowds in London the Agreement meant "peace in our time?"

Not sure why that's come to mind lately.

Also, why is Greenland in the news so much lately? Is something happening?

A key component of Nazi ideology was the concept of lebensraum, or "living space." This was the idea that the so-called Aryan people of Germany needed more territory (and the resources that came with it) for their "natural development."

Lebensraum was the basis the Nazis used to justify the invasion of Poland and the rest of Europe shortly thereafter.

(via @workingclasshistory): On this day, 28 November 1919, Faye Schulman, photographer and Jewish resistance partisan, was born in Lenin, Poland (now Belarus). In 1942, the Nazis murdered 1,850 Jews in the Lenin ghetto, leaving only Faye and 25 others alive, making Faye take and develop photos of the massacre. Covertly she made copies of the photographs for herself. She soon fled and joined the partisan resistance, serving as a fighter and nurse. While on a raid in Lenin with her unit, Faye managed to retrieve her camera equipment, and then began documenting the resistance movement, developing her photos under blankets. "I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof." Faye survived the war and moved to Toronto, Canada, living to the age of 101.

May her memory be blessing.
May her life be an example.

Report from Philly circa September: "The Proud Boys - a white supremacist group with a stupid name - planned a rally a block from my house today. The 'belly of the beast' rally. Because apparently that's where I live - the belly of the antifa beast. Whatever the fuck that means. 2 hours before it was supposed to start, the park starts filling up with my neighbors. A drum line shows up. A brass band plays. The anarchists are giving away vegetables and nachos and some artists are selling jewelry. Black leaders give speeches. We chant Breonna Taylor's name. And all the other names. No right-wing rally ever coalesces. There was never room for a critical mass to congregate. A lost-looking man or two walks to the park, doesn't see their people, turns around. A right-wing vlogger trying to debate people is surrounded and walked to the edge of the park. Someone spotted with a handgun is chased through the park, to their car, by over 100 people. The ice cream truck music plays the whole time. The usual guys sets their chess tables and start playing, the crowd of neighbors start to break up. Nazis, we will replace you. We will displace you. We will louder and more numerous. We anti-fascists are full of music and love and nachos. We will always replace you."

"In recent years we've witnessed ugly scenes of division and violence across towns and cities in England. Sadly, we've started to witness similar creep into Scotland and Ireland. At the root of it lies years of scapegoating - politicians and an enabling, right wing media pointing the finger at minorities while ignoring the real struggles faced by the working class.

Communities are breaking under the weight of poor housing, crumbling services, low paid work, rising costs, and capitalist greed. Instead of taking responsibility, those in power seek an easier target - blaming refugees and asylum seekers for their own repeated failures.

The Irish who led who fled famine were once met with the same hostility. Today, people escaping war, poverty, and oppression face those very same suspicions. Our own club was born from immigration from people riving in the East End of Glasgow with little more than hope.

We of course our honored that the likes of Glenn Beck woke up from whatever delusional fever dream he was having to decide that our tiny social media collective = ringleaders in the secret global antifascist cabal. We don't think we're worthy of being placed in the same category as the incomparable National Lawyers' Guild (who have been doing incredible work for over 90 years - check out the episode of Margaret Killjoy's podcast Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff devoted to them!) or the prison abolitionists Community Justice Exchange, but we'll do our best to live up to their examples of fighting for equality, justice, and solidarity.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THOMAS PAGE!

Page was born on September 29, 1910 in New York City and worked as a bootlegger and model during the Great Depression, then went on to become an organizer with the Unemployed Councils and joined the CPUSA. In April 1937 he traveled to Spain to fight the fascist Franco regime as a volunteer with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, returning after to the U.S. after being an injury 20 months later.

Page also served in the US Army during WWII, then took up photography and camera repair while working for the Bell Telephone Company after the war.

Page is one of the antifascist volunteers interviewed in the 1984 documentary The Good Fight (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_G_JkaTlBU).

89 years ago today, a loudspeaker van carrying UK fascist leader Oswald Mosley and a tiny contingent of his Blackshirts arrived in Tonypandy, Wales.

Mosley has hoped that his (loudly) broadcast message of hatred and division would attract new recruits. Instead, about 6000 Welsh antifascists pelted him and his bodyguards with rocks and debris as he attempted to address the crowd, forcing the fascists to turn tale and flee for their lives, after less than half an hour.

Yesterday, the women's teams for Clapton Community & Dulwich Hamlet Football Clubs were to play in the London & South East Regional Women's League trophy final. Hundreds of supporters from both teams traveled to Maidstone to attend the match, hosted at Gallagher Stadium (owned by Maidstone United FC).

Clapton - a club whose home ground was the first in the UK to be recognized as an apartheid free zone - continued their long-standing tradition of showing support for the Palestinian people by flying Palestinian flags from the stands. Maidstone supporters matched the effort with an enormous banner reading SHOW GENOCIDE THE RED CARD.

This wasn't just a trophy final. It wasn't just the last match of the season for both teams. It was the last chance for trans women on both sides to play football, after the Football Association's transphobic ban against trans athletes, which takes effect on June 1st.

The match was going along smoothly and Clapton was up 2-0 when, 20 minutes in, something unprecedented happened. In the words of the Clapton players:

“Today, 32 women were denied the opportunity to play the L&SERWFL Trophy final.

About 20 minutes into the match, both Clapton and Dulwich supporters were approached by a representative of of Maidstone United, Gallagher Stadium owners. He demanded that our supporters must stop waving the Palestinian flag, and the Dulwich supporters must take down their banner which read ‘Show genocide the red card.’

After both groups of supporters refused, a league official walked on to the field of play to stop the game. In a discussion with the match officials, players and coaches, he communicated that we could not use the ground while both the Palestinian flag and the banner were displayed.

Our given options were to 1) play the game behind closed doors or 2) to abandon the game. Clapton’s players chose to abandon the game. Both sets of fans then came together in solidarity with the Palestinian people, singing more songs and holding up our banners in support of trans women and the Palestine people, respectively.

Our players and fans are united in their support and concern for Palestinians who are being bombed daily. Showing that support with a flag or banner is no reason to abandon a cup final."

With that, the Clapton players climbed into the scaffolds to join the supporters, soon followed by Dulwich Hamlet supporters who brought their banner over. Both teams & supporters united in defiance of the attempt to silence their support for the Palestinian people and their opposition to genocide.

The Football Association - that same body that banned women from playing football for fifty years and has now banned trans athletes from playing football effective June 1st - have declared the Cup void and will not award it to either team nor schedule a rematch. They have also threatened both Dulwich Hamlets and Clapton Community FCs with discipline.

In the words of Dulwich supporters Pepper Army:

"Sport has long played an important role in putting pressure on governments perpetuating human rights abuse - from South Africa during the apartheid era to Russia since its invasion of Ukraine. Those who argue that political protest does not belong in sport are either ignorant or are deliberately ignoring that history this is particularly true in the women's game access to the game has always been political and, even now, women continue to fight for the right to play football.

We don't protest at our games because we think one protest in a regional football competition will change what is happening in Gaza. But we do it knowing that every protest joins a drum beat of defiance that is slowly convincing the world it cannot ignore the daily murders perpetuated by the state of Israel.

We are proud of the behavior of Dulwich Hamlet fans today and we are equally proud to join hands with the fans of Clapton CCFC, who have already done so much to shine a spotlight on the plight of the past on the Palestinian people.

History will judge us. Let us all be able to say we're on the right side."

"Clapton Punks have always had a huge respect for the women's team but the actions yesterday have elevated this to a new level. We are so fucking proud of you. In Maidstone we stood together behind our shared moral principles without compromise against the whimsical prejudices of some rich stadium owners and their flimsy objections to a flag."

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Manchester United vs. Crystal Palace match during which Man Utd. star Eric Cantona responded to a sieg heiling National Front/British National party supporter Matthew Simmons' racial abuse with a flying kick!

Asked about the incident two decades later, Cantona said “I didn’t punch him strong enough. I should have punched him harder.”

Still a dedicated humanitarian and anti-racist, Cantona has personally housed and feed a refugee family in his own home for two years.
