Quantum immortality is not the same thing as the idea that the mind somehow utilizes quantum processes. Quantum immortality is the idea that when you die you go some other branch of the multiverse and live on. The idea is the mind uses quantum processes is usually just a theory about the biological processes in the brain. The latter position is more open-ended and more plausible (we already know, for example, that the sense of smell utilize quantum processes so in general sense not that far fetched; things get more controversial when you start looking at specific theories).

I kept my old phone (an AT&T-locked Samsung Galaxy S7) going for 10 years, replacing the battery midway through and using it well into unsupported territory. I like to keep things working as long as I can within reason, and I also know that this phone is destined to become e-waste as soon as I get rid of it. ...
What AI model could you run locally on a decade old phone though? Probably nothing too sophisticated. It would have to be like ChatGTP 2 or something which doesn’t do a great job of holding a conversation
Thanks for your write-up. Haskell sounds interesting but a bit intimidating. I'm definitely intrigued by the functional programming thing though, I think that might be my next stop. Ruby seems interesting but I'm already familiar with JavaScript, which seems a bit similar to me, so it would be nice to shake things up a bit.
Thanks for the suggestion. How does Zig compare to C safety wise? One of my main reasons for going for Rust was because I was looking for something like C but safer
This might be a stupid question but what is Lisp they use in emacs? People talk about 'lisps' in plural so I can't tell if its a family of languages or just one language thats just really flexible
Thanks. After reading a lot of the replies here I'm definitely leaning towards functional programming. I have one question though: how come you're recommending guile scheme instead of just scheme? I looked into it and it looks like they differ slightly?
Even a CPU made today starts off by booting up pretending to be an 8086 processor, a 16 bit CPU from 1978.
That's fascinating.
The godbolt compiler looks like it would be very useful for learning programming. Reminds me of this website even though it's not quite the same because it's a game.
All these comments on LISP here are just making me realize I don't really know what LISP is. I will have to look into it. Thanks for piquing my interest
i don’t want to hear about rust, const generics are almost useless and you know it, specialization isn’t really a thing and nothing like variadic templates exists yet
What is your honest opinion about Rust? I'm curious
We already have a very dysfunctional healthcare system. It's a real concern that people might turn to MAID because they cannot access healthcare. The article linked above cites at least one example of this. I think this concern is even greater with mental health cases, since our mental healthcare system is even more dysfunctional. Why are we offering MAID for people with mental health issues when we can barely offer proper healthcare for people with mental health issues? That's a legitimate concern. If you want to frame that concern as me being as a nosey person who wants people to live in suffering then you can, but that's not a very productive way to hold this conversation.
Yes. In addition to the environmental costs there is the very real financial costs. Th cost of building and maintaining our roads is causing municipal debt to skyrocket across North America, which results in reduced services elsewhere, like cuts to community centres or schools. Theres a very good book on this topic called You’ll Pay For This which I recommend to anyone interested in city politics

Interesting. It would also make sense that going full FOSS might lead to less social media use indirectly, since most social media apps would require micro-G

What's the most fun programming language to learn?
I don't need something practical. I just need something fun to keep me motivated.
