Google criticizes Europe's plan to adopt free software ( pplware.sapo.pt )

Google has criticized the European Union’s intentions to achieve digital sovereignty through open-source software. The company warned that Brussels’ policies aimed at reducing dependence on American tech companies could harm competitiveness. According to Google, the idea of replacing current tools with open-source programs ...

Zedstrian ,

Walker suggested that American companies could collaborate with European firms to implement measures ensuring data protection.

Simultaneously, those same companies are actively lobbying the EU to dismantle those protections.

Zedstrian ,

Warrantless data collection isn't justified whether the technology is provided by Flock or anyone else.

Zedstrian ,

Here WeGo is proprietary and not based on OpenStreetMap, but given that it's the only option in the U.S. with live traffic data that didn't stoop to renaming the Gulf of Mexico with fascist propaganda, it's the one I've been using.

Zedstrian ,

Stremio might work better if usability on a smart TV is a factor. Otherwise, sites like P-Stream (Movie-Web successor) switch between a free array of online streaming servers, or one could obtain the releases individually via torrents, usenet, or sometimes archive.org.

Zedstrian ,

The more countries that join it, the more international law breaks down by diverting resources from the UN.

Zedstrian ,

Clearly that's why it's called DoorDash. /s

While their intentions are good, this will unfortunately probably lead to them losing their last two domain names.

With how big some of those communities are, blocking them is paramount to defederating from the instance itself in terms of losing access to posts unrelated to Israel or Zionism (a quarter of Lemmy monthly active users are subscribed to europe@feddit.org icon Europe ).

Zionism should be spoken out against, but the repercussions of further Threadiverse fragmentation should also be considered. Just as troubling are extremist posts on lemmy.ml, Lemmygrad, and Hexbear. However, if their federation is maintained with the benefit of Threadiverse unity gained (with the user retaining the option of implementing their own blocks), then what amounts to partial defederation with another major instance in this case should also be avoided.

Calling for the destruction of Israel must obviously mean you want to kill every last man, woman and child, rather than simply wanting to overthrow Netanyahu's genocidal fascist regime.

They complain of users being misinterpreted, but when those users use deliberately inflammatory language elsewhere, it's not a stretch for a moderator to then interpret messages like 'death to Israel' as calling for further violence—implicitly against civilians—and taking action based on it. Supporting the genocide against Palestine is wrong, but so is calling for retributory violence against Israeli civilians, explicitly or implicitly. Their moderation problematically confuses anti-Zionism and antisemitism at times, but it's not an action they should be blocked or defederated over.

archive.is works (use uBlock Origin to block their DDOS script)

Zedstrian ,

There should be an option to turn it all off for those who don't want to be spied on though.

Also, features like remote start could be implemented to function over a local network rather than needing to connect to the internet at all.

With streaming companies owning the content, buying DVDs is just another way of financially supporting the same companies for worse quality.

Even when one piracy platform is taken down, there are new ones launched in their place. Nothing guarantees that DVDs will continue to be produced in perpetuity, just as digital copies of video games are progressively becoming less and less prevalent.

Not interested if it's on .ml.

By that argument, the EU would be 'punishing' countries for not joining in the first place. EU membership comes with benefits and obligations; countries can choose to leave to avoid the obligations, but the benefits only come as a result of fulfilling them.

Zedstrian ,

None of the benefits existed before the EU existed. Countries economically benefit from joining the EU due to those novel benefits, but in absence of them, countries otherwise don't lose anything they had already by not joining.

US ambasador to Poland threatens to withdraw troops and equipmyfrom Poland ( wiadomosci.onet.pl )

Ambassador Rose isn't backing down— he's been fiercely arguing on social media not only with Prime Minister Donald Tusk , but also with a random user on the X website who commented on one of his posts. "Should we take all our soldiers and equipment with us?" Rose asked, responding to a critical post in which a Polish user ...

Left-leaning states engaging in gerrymandering is nothing to the onslaught of voter suppression legislation enacted in right-leaning states, in addition to their own gerrymandering efforts.

Unless those on the right are willing to support national legislation banning it everywhere, while also ensuring widespread ballot access, any complaints to these measures are pure hypocrisy.

Compared to most concentrate orange juice, the frozen Minute Maid one wasn't nearly as sour. The Great Value one tastes terrible, but maybe there's another alternative... 🤔

Zedstrian , (edited )

Because after pasteurized orange juice is deaerated and kept in storage tanks for up to a year before being bottled and shipped, it becomes tasteless and needs to be reflavored with 'flavor packs'.

Zedstrian ,

It always tastes better with half a can less of water than it recommends doing.

Valve's better than Epic Games, but they still have every incentive to keep users in their ecosystem with DRM. To that end, the Steam Deck's Proton compatibility layer and touchpad driver are integrated into Steam, rather than functioning independently of it.

Using the Steam Deck is possible without buying any games on Steam, but making Steam the core part of the distribution inherently encourages its usage.

Edit: I like the Steam Deck, but I don't think it's unreasonable to point out the aspects of the platform designed to encourage the use of Steam.

Zedstrian , (edited )

Wine can be set up in a similar way, but Valve's default setup is designed to for use with Steam first and foremost.

A bigger issue is that the Steam Deck touchpads don't work without Steam being open. A more open approach would have been to write independent driver software for the touchpads.

Valve's far and away better than Nintendo, but has still designed the Steam Deck to be heavily reliant upon Steam to function. The Steam Deck is priced in a way that anticipates increased consumer usage of Steam, but in isolation of Steam, it would be more usable as a Linux PC if it were more software-agnostic.

Zedstrian ,

Valve is definitely the best and the most innovative, particularly in contrast to Epic's attempt to bribe their way to success and intentionally ignoring Linux, but even the best have their faults.

Zedstrian ,

Adopting the Euro is still de facto optional as long as a country's government intentionally delays compliance with the five convergence criteria.

Zedstrian , (edited )

I think it's brainless too, but if people do use it, better for the public good that they use open source platforms that are harder to manipulate versus platforms with commercial, proprietary algorithms.
