"The framers of our Constitution understood the dangers of unbridled government surveillance. They knew that democracy could flourish only in spaces free from government snooping and interference, and they put restraints on government overreaching in the Fourth Amendment of the Bill of Rights. . . . These protections require, at a minimum, a neutral arbiter - a magistrate - standing between the government's endless desire for information and the citizens' desires for privacy." ~ Elizabeth Holtzman

From a warmer January day in the 30's. Getting down to -18 tonight (real temp) with possible wind chills of close to -45. Brrrr...

Too cold and icy for me to take nature walks right now so here's a pic from warmer days earlier this month.

The luminary art show at the local botanical gardens is done and dismantled. It was interesting viewing the installations in daylight and imagine how they appeared when lit up after nightfall. This one was rather large and very colorful even without being lit up.

    Re: Religious Experiences

So, I thought I'd share a bit about my early religious experiences. I was raised by my grandparents -- my grandmother was a lapsed Catholic, my grandfather was vaguely Protestant (his mother was Scottish Episcopal, his grandmother a Mennonite). I was the one who decided that I should attend the local Baptist church because I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I got them to take me to church, but being who I was, I figured I should check out other religions before I committed to one (this was at the age of 10). I went to a few different services -- Greek Orthodox, Reformist Jewish Temple, Calvary Baptist, 7th Day Adventist and Born Again Christians. 7th Day weren't very fun, and the Born Agains made me feel that I hadn't sinned enough to need to be redeemed. However, I did allow myself to be baptized by my favorite religious leader, the female pastor of the local Baptist church (which had a LOT of Pagan folk traditions -- but that's a whole other story). Anyhow, the Baptism apparently did not take, as a year later, I was dressing in black and trying to conjure up the Devil, and hanging out in Salem. Lol! Oooops! And you know, my grandmother bought me my first pentagram -- which I still own. If nothing else, she was supportive (and ended up sticking with the local Baptist church, as did my grandfather).
