The level of faking in all reports inside the Russia's governmental apparatus is astonishing, though.

I cannot understand how they could avoid that regarding their nuclear weapons program when the faked reports are such an integral part of their system of governance.
If you don't fake reports, you get fired by Putin for being inconsistent with the other aides.

The bribery of Ukrainian officials was the most important among Putin's military projects, and Putin failed to recognize that even that project's documents were all faked. Whoever has faked any documents regarding the nuclear program has received a lot of respect from Putin, and given more influence in the program. Since 1999, Putin has been hand-picking people who fake reports and replaced others with them.

The more important the project, the more Putin influences who is allowed to take part in it. And Putin has managed to fuck up his things big time by trusting fakers extremely strongly and assuming the others are giving diverging data because of disloyalty.
If something in the Russia is going haywire, then a project important to Putin, such as the nuclear weapons program is.

How do you pronounce the name "Wille"? How about "Ville"?

Or that singers family name, Wirtanen? Not the same as Virtanen?

Or, in which way do you pronounce the word "wero"? The same as "vero", or something different?

Can you give an example of a Finnish word with a "w" that is not pronounced the same as the Finnish "v"?

I've met two Wilmas and both of them get their names written as Vilma.

People k ow that W is deprecated and V is used now instead, and then when they hear that sound, they write a "V". Just like you said.

Also, try reciting the alphabet. It ends "oo, pee, kuu, är, äs, tee, uu, vee, äks, yy, zeta, oo, ää, öö", right? Where is "kaksoisvee"?

Yeah, it seems to have appeared again at some point. I'll need to learn how to run it on Linux, but it apparently should be possible indeed! Or maybe I'll find some place with a Windows computer to try it. Nice! :)

I would assume that was probably what is called pool fire. If you heat a candle enough, you can get its stearin to vaporize before it's lit on fire. The vaporized stearin burns very hot, causing the rest of the stearin to vaporize even faster, meaning there will be more fire, etc.

That's why you should never put many tealights next to each other. They can be very skilled in causing a pool fire. And looking at the photo of a lot of candles shoulder to shoulder to each other, one would assume from the photo that there will eventually be a pool fire. Especially since there's a tent that can do a good job directing the oxygen flow.

The shape of the candle plays a role as well. In order to boil, material must first melt. Beeswax candles are made so narrow that no pool of molten beeswax can form. And without it being liquid first, it also cannot boil.

I'd say, make it unambiguously clear that joining the EU means joining the Euro and joining the Schengen area. Then require at least 67,7 % "Yes" in a poll.

I would prefer UK not joining us without these requirements fulfilled. And yes, other's may join with just 50 % "yes", but they don't have a history of quitting the EU.

I dunno... Why not? What's so special about UK that they should stay out if Macedonia can join?

Maybe there should be an exception that the UK poll should have a 67,7 % "yes" instead of the standard 50 %, but otherwise I don't see why we couldn't apply the same rules we apply to everyone else around. They're welcome :)

There's no insistence on UK adopting the Euro.

Any new member state adopts the Euro and joins the Schengen area. This is not something to insist, it's just a rule that exists regardless of insisting or not insisting. Or insisting to not insist – whatever.

If the UK ever joins the EU, it will also join the Euro. It's not really something that is up for debate.

Yeah, it should have caused that debacle before they elected to let go of all the concessions they had.

But yeah, I think a lot of EU countries would revolt if UK was let in without having to join the Euro and Schengen. And yes, I believe this does indeed mean that UK is not going to rejoin within the next half a century at least. Also a reason it feels a bit stupid trying to integrate them into EU stuff – they're going to prefer staying out anyhow (unleas they get concessions they won't get) so why bother?

Of course, if they want to follow some EU rules, why not? And for each EU rule they proactively and reliably implement, they should of course receive the relevant goodies, just like Norway. But, at least I would not want the EU to spend our resources trying to pull UK into doing anything it's not motivated enough to do out of its own accord.

Because the Russia is committing a genocide in the territories it has occupied from Ukraine, and Ukrainians are fully aware that the same would be done in all of Ukraine if it was to surrender.

As long as Ukraine does not surrender, the Russia will keep bombing their cities and many will die.
If it surrenders, there will be much more Ukrainians dying than just that amount.

Not surrendering is a way for them to stay alive.

They know they cannot surrender without getting an extremely strong punishment from the Russia, so they won't.

To continue the above: The amount of civilian prisoners held in the torture facilities around the occupied territories is crazy. And they go through daily torture, including electric shocks to their sexual organs and breaking finger bones, and other "fun" stuff. Ukrainians absolutely do not want that to happen to them.

Nice music. I could not directly find it on Tidal, but when I looked for all songs with Jonne Järvelä mentioned in the credits, Tidal did show it!

Most of Fiskars scissors have a plastic-covered (orange) handle. Ones that don't have them are very rare. And yes, when you see them there's no way to tell whether they were made in the 1980's or in 2020's, because they will work the same and look the same either way.

All you need is to have the IP addresses. If you can extract them, then the rest can be done by saying
whois ip.ad.re.ss (where you put some numbers between 0 and 255 instead of ip, ad, re and ss.)

I hate the electric toilet flush handles used in Tesla, but I must admit it did feel impressive when I encountered it the first time. I was hitchhiking and was allowed in a car. The door handle was kind of visible but... not really a handle?!

So, I kind of put my hand near it in confusion and "bzzrt", it came out of the door, allowing me to open the door. It was a cool experience.
Still not one I'd be ready to risk my life for, though.

    MySoda answered my email and told the following shops: Marktkauf, Kaufland, Rossmann, DM, Lidl. And they mentioned www.sodataste.com and www.sodalivery.com as further online sources for CO2.

    Then, they also mentioned CO2 cylinders by Wassermaxx and Aldi being compatible (beside "basically all cylinders", with practically the only exception being that most Sodastream cylinders are incompatible), and from the existence of Aldi cylinders I'll venture to make a guess that Aldi has them as well 🤪
    And since we've now covered Lidl, Red Netto and Aldi, I'd be surprised if Penny Markt didn't have the same as well. The dog Netto usually has nothing anyway, so probably not this service either?

    Anyway, doesn't seem to be an insurmountable problem in Germany at all!

    I'd like to chime in with the recommendation to generally not veganify non-vegan recipes. You are taking a recipe that is designed with ingredients having certain characteristics, and substituting some of those ingredients with slightly different ones. If the original recipe has been tuned to be as close to perfection as possible, then your altered version cannot be as good.

    And then again, a recipe designed as vegan from ground up has all the ratios between different ingredients, and the choices of ingredients designed to really fit well together.

    My personal experience is that vegan food that is slightly different but takes the best out of the ingredients available can often be better than its non-vegan counterpart. You get better results by at most taking inspiration from the non-vegan foods and then creating something of your own than by trying to do something with altered ingredients.

    But of course: This is the way for perfection. It assumes you are a gourmet magician or that you have extremely good recipes available somewhere. It can really often bring you very adequate results to just emulate a non-vegan recipe. I am sorry I am unable to directly help you with that; but I feel it might be useful to you if I tried pushing you a bit towards the direction of making the best of your ingredients and seeing what comes out of that :)
    The best vegan foods I have eaten have all been such that you simply couldn't sensibly make them using any non-vegan ingredients.

    Snowing isn't possible without clouds, and clouds warm up in the same way a blanket does. It might be something like -20°C on a clear day, which is uncomfortable indeed, but a snowy day seldom gets colder than -10°C, might be more like -7°C or so. Not all that bad, really :)

    Oh, so Stellaris 4 is out already?!

    I'm apparently currently running Stellaris 4.2.3.
    I didn't even know it's not Stellaris 1 anymore!

    It's... Weird. If they consider there to have been already Stellaris 2 and Stellaris 3, meaning they see it as a different game, then... Why just delete Stellaris 1?
    But also, I do need to try downgrading to 2.1.3 and see how it feels now that I'm used to the ways of Stellaris 4!

    Reddit is actually a whole different system. Yes, it's alternative for the whole of fediverse, as it is completely unfederated. It's basically just one instance. Being a PieFed/Lemmy/Mbin alternative, it of course shares a lot of features with them (much more with PieFed, but a very reasonable amount with Lemmy as well!)

    With PieFed and Lemmy and Mbin you have access to all the same posts and all the same communities, so they are alternatives to each other, and it mostly doesn't matter a shit which one you go for. But Reddit is a different thing altogether.

    You can check what Reddit ise over here: http://reddit.com . Try searching for any Forumverse posts there and you will see it's not part of the Fediverse. You will not find any of our content there, unless someone who has created a user account also on Reddit has copypasted something to Reddit!

    Okay.

    Just wanted to point out that PieFed and Lemmy are the same thing. There's a reason to fight between Reddit and Forumverse, but whatever makes Lemmy grow is good for PieFed and vice versa. So, the meaning of the word "alternative" is very different when comparing Reddit with Forumverse, and when comparing various Forumverse softwares to each other.

    Reddit is kind of "against" us, while PieFed and Lemmy play in the same team.

    What things do they handle differently? I mean, PieFed has an equivalent of Multireddits and Lemmy does not, but Lemmy is about to have them if 1.0 comes out some year. That's already been declared.

    The same with flairs. Yeah, PieFed has them, Lemmy doesn't, but Lemmy will have them if 1.0 comes out.

    I wouldn't say it's "handling things differently" that one has implemented features that the other one is still in the process of implementing, but has already decided it definitely will implement them, at some point.

    PieFed is essentially just future Lemmy.

    This is Reddit blocking Feddit.uk from requesting the page title, though. "maam", a user of feddit.uk, wrote the link there, and feddit.uk then opened the page behind the link, in order to get the title of the page. The title provided by old.reddit.com was "Blocked", and that's what feddit.uk wrote there.

    So, neither feddit.uk nor lemmy.dbzer0.com are blocking Reddit. To some extent a block seems to exist in the opposite direction already, though!

    A very nice thing about the Forumverse is that our refugees can perfectly well be internal. If there is a reason to escape, it is your instance you're escaping, not the whole network! This feels like a very promising feature :)

    Owen did not answer, but I think I can.

    I once wrote that genociding Uyghurs is bad, and that comment of mine got promptly deleted by the lemmy.ml admins. It being forbidden to talk about a genocide happening because it's happening in territories held by China and not in the west is a very big red flag!

    Another one is that you're not allowed to talk about Holodomor, which was a genocide done by Moscow against Ukrainians about one century ago.

    I am very surprised that at the same time they do allow talking about the genocide Israel is doing to Palestinians. The lemmy.ml admins are absolutely inconsistent. But, at least some genocides are bad even in their eyes.
