shit, prime put up casino royale for free so we watched it again (eva green is in it!). but then we saw all the other daniel craig bonds are also up, so i guess it's nothing but bond movies for the next days, and then we probably have to continue with pierce brosnan bond, and then timothy dalton bond, as deep as prime allows us to go i guess. ugh. anyway, quantum of solace is next (rory kinnear has a role here, another penny dreadful actor; and david harbour from stranger things)

I don't know if it was intentional, but one parallel I like:

Dench M's first movie, GoldenEye, is right after the collapse of the Soviet Union, as the west struggles to find its identity in a new era and she's there to call a Bond a dinosaur. Meanwhile a dark secret from Bond's past reappears to threaten the world...

Dench M's last movie, Skyfall, is right after the failure of the War on Terror, as the west struggles to find its identity in a new era, and now M is the one being called out as a dinosaur. Meanwhile a dark secret from M's past reappears to threaten the world...

I'm really blown away by all the people sharing their stories in response to my article, so I want to share something about constructed memory and memory consolidation that I've been struggling to come to terms with.

And it's not even about gender.

Its about my dad.

Is it possible that your dad did work on the Saturn V, but it was the Skylab Saturn V instead of the Apollo Saturn V?

@Impossible_PhD I'd be curious to know your thoughts on this Jules Gill-Petersen article:

https://thebaffler.com/latest/reject-transgender-liberalism-gill-peterson

Maybe I just didn't really understand "A Short History of Trans-misogyny", but this article seemed strangely contradictory to me. They both claim that western liberal conceptions are a central part of the problem with how we try to address transness, but from that they seem to take opposite routes as to what exactly is wrong, with "A Short History..." claiming it's liberals trying to force everything into a strict European gender binary instead of being open to the more fluid lived experience of non-western gender variance, but then this article seems to be suggesting the problem is they're too open to it when they should just focus on the economic aspects of binary medical transition.

Waylp, the trial piece I bought from that eshakti competitor finally showed up and...

Yeah. Just... yeah.

And this was with custom fitting. Like, I paid extra money for tailoring. No darts, even.

Anyway, Indophilia makes comically shitty clothes, and clearly doesn't actually do custom tailoring.

I've caught 25% of my students in a single course section cheating with GenAI this semester. One even appealed it, arguing that "other professors allowed it."

The whole value of writing instruction is in the struggle and growth of the process.

Without that, my whole profession just closes up shop.

And by the way--in that class? I've had strong suspicions on about another 25% of students. It just wasn't blatant enough to catch them.

Saying, "Don't worry, it will all be okay" to someone who is intelligent, informed, and at risk is not comforting.

It's actually offensive and alienating.

If you wan to keep your relationships intact, and if you want to be a comfort to your friends, learn to sit with their concerns and distress without reflexively smothering them in toxic positivity.

It's a habit worth cultivating. We're all going to need it.

@JessTheUnstill @ShaulaEvans

The one that always pushes my berserk button is strangers telling people struggling with loneliness, isolation, or alienation that "somebody loves and cares about you"

Maybe that should be true, but for a lot of people it's not, and gaslighting them about it comes across as "please suffer less visibly"

There's a part of me that wonders if the real reason transphobes hate on trans women in sports so much is that they see us as men, and that they're so misogynistic that they can't stand seeing "men" lose to cis women all the damn time in the thing they care about the most.

Cuz seriously, trans women were welcome to play in the Olympics from 2000 until just now, and in all that time, not a single one of us ever medaled.

That's like... 3000ish medals awarded to women in that timeframe.

Just on odds, one of us should've gotten a bronze on dumb luck or something.

StormyDragon ,
@StormyDragon@dragon.style avatar

@Impossible_PhD

Did you know that Olympic trap and skeet shooting were originally mixed-gender events, up until a woman won the gold in skeet shooting in 1992?

Women were banned from competing entirely for 8 years, and then when a separate women's event returned in 2000, it had less targets, so that a woman would never again be able to outscore the men

@Impossible_PhD@hachyderm.io avatar Impossible_PhD , to random

2024 was a... mixed year for me. I had a lot of incredibly wonderful things happen, and also I worked way too damn hard, while wrestling with some profoundly shitty people and stuff.

My writing was read by more people than I ever dreamed might, soaring over 60,000 monthly reads at one point.

When I first came out, an elder trans gal told me to be careful around a couple of groups of people. One of them was white cis lesbians, because they'd either be the kindest or the most hateful and transphobic people I'd ever meet, with no ground in between.

It depresses me how right she was.
