It's kinda weird how the "The left hates technology (because AI)" mostly come from people whose experience with tech is on the level of vibecoding and the "left" they criticize consists to a significant part of people who've been actually building and maintaining systems for decades.

Maybe hands-on experience leads to different results then just "idea vibing"?

So, I picked up a Roomba 350 at the thrift store - It turns out these things had a 'standard' serial port, that iRobot was pretty open-minded about implementing fine-grained control through. Kind of wondering if in TYOOL 2025 I can mount a CPU on top of this to do SLAM through a upward looking fisheye lens ala inside-out headset tracking to bring it up to 'modern' specs?

Difficulty level - has to fit under the dresser and not eat into the runtime.

So it turns out I forgot that RUF did a peacock head, tail, legs, and fluffs that are suitable for a phoenix. Past me did the texture work for everything but the legs, and the fluff needs fixing, but its almost finished. So I'll probably be using this!

A screenshot of a modded peacock head in Second Life. Complex description follows: This head is of a long necked bird, and done in reds and oranges to resemble a phoenix in a sort of cartoony style. It has blue eyes, and you can see the white parts where there is no texture. The fluff just looks like stacked legos because I've only textured the top bit to look like feathers. The crest is using a texture that is just the head texture, which has resulted in black artifacts in it.

Chatting with a friend about Cloudflare's intermittent outages today, they brought up an interesting point: How many organizations have started relying on Cloudflare to do basic security blocking and tackling stuff, like stopping SQL injection attacks at the edge? Maybe your devs were lazy at blocking this stuff in the past b/c CF was the control layer to compensate for that.

You might say well okay but if CF is down, so are the sites relying on them, and that's true. But a lot of organizations will switch CF off during these times to keep their sites and services reachable and running. And my friend's point was that for those organizations, they might want to take a closer look at the traffic they received during this eight-hour outage window or whatever, and I think that's sound advice.

Very much annoyed that my medical group I receive care at has such a shitty web portal. They have evening hours, but their website doesn't actually let you choose those. And I cannot come at a time that is within the times that you can choose, which leads me to have to email my PCP to further explain, which makes more work for everyone.

And before you say call, know that this particular medical group is so slammed at all times with calls that calling is nearly impossible.

If you were to make something out of cardboard and/or paper-mache that you intended to use outside, how would you protect it from wear/damage? I have Modpodge and hot glue already and the cardboard that I need for the shell.

I have an idea for a crossbody bag with a strap. I don't own a sewing machine, so any fabric or vinyl would need glue or staples.

I DON'T have a safe, well ventilated area to work with resin or spray paint unless it dries /extremely/ quickly (less than an hour), since using it would entail going out on the sidewalk of my apartment building. I can't leave stuff outside, so it would need to be babysat.

How is this journalctl --unit ssh.service --grep='fail|error' better than grep -E 'fail|error' /var/log/auth? The older syntax works across various distros including Unix/*BSD but the journalctl just Linux+Systemd specific. Then don't even have /var/log/auth or /var/log/secure anymore in modern systemd based distros.

Serious question for those familiar with photo film. I have a film canister that is of unknown age, but is likely more than 20 years old, and could be more than 30. I have no idea what is on it.

What are the chances of getting any clear pictures off of a roll of film this old if I took it to be developed? Is it worth the time and money to attempt?
