A Mac application can keep running without having an open window. That’s also why the menu bar is not attached to the window.

Minimize button, minimizes the window into the dock.

You can also hide an application, or hide all others, which is a very useful feature.

Limerance ,

I‘m a long time Mac user and have hated the full screen function since they introduced it. The + button used to zoom/maximize the window according to the size of its content, and it still remained resizable. You can alt + click the + to get the old behavior. There’s also a setting, where you get the old behavior by double clicking the window title bar.

The whole window management has become messy. It was pretty simple and powerful, but then they added more and more features every year, making it harder to use and less useful.

The full screen mode is just bad.

You can change all keyboard shortcuts in macOS.

Limerance , (edited )

macOS has tons of power user features built in. Automator, Service Menu, Shortcuts, Folder Actions, intelligent folders, and much more! Adding commands to the contextmenu, that then work across apps is super cool and easy to do for example.

In any app, I can select text and then use the service menu or context menu to run my own text transformation scripts (title case, replace, etc.). Only using built-in tools!

Also you can add or change keyboard shortcuts for every app, even if it doesn’t have them for some menu items. Do you want to not accidentally quit Firefox with cmd + q ? Change it to cmd + alt + q in System Settings.

How many windows do you have open?

Limerance ,

Sounds like serious work. Do you use several monitors?

Make real backups. Ideally make two or more

  • a full disk backup with SuperSuper
  • A Time Machine Backup on an external drive

The likelihood of making your machine unusable for a while is non negligible.

Mac

If you want to dual boot with macOS, do some research. Boot loaders and EFI can be tricky.

Holding alt after pressing the power button gives you the option to choose the drive to boot from. Holding cmd + R after pressing the power button allows booting into recovery mode. It allows you to partition and format your internal drive and reinstall macOS.

You can install a newer version of macOS than is officially supported using OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

FOSS principles

Intel Macs often have Broadcom WiFi chips, that need proprietary software to work. As a noob, you should got with a distro that makes it easy to install these or does it automatically for you.

You likely also want to play some video files, so you will need nonfree stuff.

Distro hopping

Install to an external drive or Virtual Machine. You can do that on your existing macOS with VirtualBox for example.

similar to Windows, macOS, customizable

Even the desktop environments, who claim to be macOS like (Endeavour, GNOME), have at best a superficial similarity. Don’t expect a macOS replacement. All desktop environments are different from macOS.

beginner distro

Fedora and SuSE are not beginner friendly. Lots of Linux distros use the same marketing terms of easy to use, powerful, efficient, etc.

Start with Ubuntu or something based on Ubuntu like Mint.

Cinnamon, KDE, and Gnome are all good desktop environments for beginners.

Question: Is there a Self Hosted Discord like app?

Pretty much what it says on the tin, but for more context. My friends and I use Discord to play D&D and other TTRPGs. We also use it to send memes and just have conversations. We mostly do the chat, text, images, gifs, etc. But we also use the voice and video chat pretty regularly too. Screen share sometimes as well. So I'd ...

Limerance ,

Yes, enshittification of Discord has started a while ago, and it’s becoming worse.

Limerance ,

Call them cretins all you want, Discord in a great piece of software and very powerful. The usability is better than most others.

Limerance ,

Not bad is a good description. It’s not fun to use compared to other chat software.

Limerance ,

Zulip integrates with Jitsi, Zoom, and Bigbluebutton for voice and video chat. Looks like a sensible solution.

Apple‘s AirPrint standard for wireless printing is pretty much sending a PDF over IPP.

Docx is bloated XML, but much better than the binary formats before.

Better for LibreOffice and other software to read and write.

XML isn’t meant to be written by hand.

Limerance OP ,

Look at a terminal command and try to understand what it does. You can do this by checking out the commands it’s made of and learning about them.

I love playing in a group where the characters have a common backstory. It enables so many opportunities for role playing and storytelling. A married couple with in-laws or other relatives, family connections have great dynamics. A group of former slaves, who bought their freedom. A troupe of artists on tour. Delegation of athletes. All from the same village. Fans of the same football team.

Corbyn‘s new party called Your Party was founded a few months ago. It’s a sectarian leftist party, already split between woke activists, socially conservative Muslims, and communist entryists.

The leaders Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn hate and work against each other openly.

Some important members are jumping ship and go to the Greens.

read some guardian articles on it https://www.theguardian.com/politics/your-party

Watch the party convention to get an idea of the culture.

Limerance ,

This sounds like you actually want to win an election and not just look good to your ultra progressive peers.

Building a wide coalition and appealing to a lot of voters is the way to win elections.

Limerance ,

You can watch the Your Party conference and see for yourself.

No, back then iOS was still heavy on skeuomorphic design. I‘d love for a desktop environment that embraces that.

Cosmic is fun and has a lot of potential. It’s a bit like a new take on XFCE. However it has weird limitations and bugs still. For example when editing the top and bottom panel, it’s divided into beginning, end, and center. XFCE and other solve this with providing a flexible space to achieve the same.

Limerance ,

Yes, it’s early days.

There are a couple of really cool projects going on at the moment, that use some kind of tiling.

DankLinux and Noctalia used with niri is worth trying for example.

Omarchy gets a lot of hate, however it’s actually really well done. Probably the best intro to a tiling window manager with keyboard focus. The included features are well thought out. Included documentation is excellent. It also looks great. Lots of attention to detail. It shows how to make a distro that’s very different from Windows and Mac OS. Instead of trying to ape the popular OS, it leans into the strengths of Linux.

Limerance ,

I’m not quite sure what the differences between Aurora and Bazzite are, besides pre-installed Steam.

What else is important do you think? Are there reasons beside gaming to choose Bazzite?

As an aside, most websites for Linux distros have utterly meaningless and interchangeable descriptions on their websites: user friendly, powerful, etc.

There are alternative App Stores in Europe for iOS. So far they haven’t been very successful, because of Apple‘s interference. They do exist and are growing.

Social gatherings have been... different since I switched.

Edit: I'm glad so many of you have had no issues with multiple monitors. Attractiveness of men has a lot to do with status. A good job and income is one way, but not the only one. A broke and unemployed artist, like a locally known DJ, attracts women easily.

Being able to provide interesting and fun experiences is also attractive. If you’re able to make someone feel good, they will want to spend more time with you. Money helps with this, but isn’t necessary.

Positions of power, even very minor ones, also help attraction. When I was a lead organizer for a local non profit, I got laid all the time.

Physical beauty matters immensely as well. Although some women choose less hot men, because they want their mate to not have easily available alternative options. A nice haircut, good hygiene, tasteful clothing, being in shape all matter.

Women between 18 and 29 get a lot of attention from men of all ages. They can be picky. Attractiveness of women decreases from their mid 30s onwards. There are other reasons, but the main is the ability to birth children. Fertility for women decreases sharply in their 40s. For men it’s different. While they’re still studying or starting in life in their early 20s, they compete with 35 year olds, who have more money, more life experience, more confidence, more skills, while still looking young.

Together this leads to men typically dating women the same age or up to 15 years younger. That means a 25 year old man has a dating pool of 18 to 25 year olds, while a 25 year old woman has a range of 25 to 40 year olds. That’s double!

For me personally I experienced a huge change in my ability to attract women after I turned 30. It has become so much easier, across the board. Now I‘m in my 40s and sometimes sleep with women in their 20s, that would have been way out of my league back when I was her age.

That said, it’s possible at any age to find a partner, that fits you. Be social in a way where you meet lots of potential partners regularly and you have status in one way or another. Being a valuable member of a community is a good way of getting there. Ideally this is a community formed around an interest of yours.

Why was Dukat never arrested when visiting DS9?

A who's who of Cardassian officers and Bajoran collaborators (Darhe'el, for example) were persona non grata at best, and arrested to face charges of war crimes at worst. I can imagine that, if there were no specific incidents which could be linked to Gul Dukat, perhaps he and other Cardassian officials would be tolerated... But ...

Arresting a diplomat is very serious and could be the start of a new war.

Diplomatic status, amnesty, and persecution of crimes was very likely part of the peace agreement.
