What some people call talent is really 3 things:

  1. Advantage
  2. Interest
  3. Skill

A person with natural physical or mental advantages plus a natural inclination toward the subject but no skill at doing it yet is called a student.

A person with a deep interest in the subject plus skill acquired through years of study but no innate physical or mental advantages is called a hobbyist.

A person with years of study in a subject plus physical or mental characteristics that advantage them toward it but no interest in actually doing it for fun is called a professional.

So does your child have talent? Here's the god's honest truth - no. No they don't. Not yet. Your child's body and mind are both still developing. They have small hands and they're still figuring out how the heck to use them. They won't have any kind of physical or mental advantage for years. Your child also has not yet put the tens of thousands of hours of practice in to acquire skill. Both of those will come with time and effort. And as for interest, you either have that or you don't, and nobody can make your child's mind up one way or another.

And here's the really weird part. While your child either does or doesn't have the interest, and while physical and mental advantages certainly are additive toward talent, the time and effort they will spend developing and honing their skill is not just multiplicative but an exponential multiplier of the other two. And skill is just effort plus time.

Talent = (interest + advantage) ^ (effort + time)

Put in the time. Put in the effort. And watch your talent grow.

Fact checking the Bad Bunny halftime show:

  1. Yes that couple really did get married. They are a real life couple who begged Bad Bunny to come to their wedding and instead he invited them to come get married at and during his show.

  2. No Bad Bunny did not perform in a dress, pearl necklace and high heels. You're just transphobic and fell for AI generated slop. Would have been totally fine if he did though.

  3. Yes the show was primarily sung in Spanish, with the exception of the phrase "God bless America", a few "uh huhs" and "okays" and the entirety of Lady Gaga's portion.

  4. No Bad Bunny is not an immigrant. You're just racist. Puerto Rico has been part of America since the Spanish American War in 1886. Would have been totally fine if he was though.

  5. Yes you did see Pedro Pascal, Cardi B, Jessica Alba, and many other celebs and sports stars making cameo appearances as extras. And yes that was Ricky Martin and Lady Gaga performing.

  6. No Bad Bunny was not making a political statement about ICE by giving his Grammy away to a little Latino boy. You're being weird. Stop being weird. That little boy was pretty explicitly supposed to represent himself as a kid, watching himself on the TV and dreaming big.

  7. Yes Bad Bunny did actually perform the most watched halftime show in history, with over 136 million viewers. And no, the Kid Rock Epstein Extravaganza didn't even register as a blip on the radar, with (generously) 4.5 million YouTube streams.

I think it's very telling that of the top three reasons given by users of A.I. for why they use A.I. to make art — it's faster, it's cheaper, and it lets me do alone what used to require a team of people — literally none of them have anything to do with actually making better art. And that's coming straight from the people who actually use it.

So far, the pitch for A.I. generative art appears to be, "Use our product! You can make cheap shitty knockoffs in half the time with more loneliness!"

Okay I'm a teacher so let me teach you something today.

We need to talk about how to watch video that has been recorded in a war zone. Because that is what Minnesota is right now. A war zone. You are going to need to learn this skill, because it is only going to get worse, and Minnesota is the test for what they want for the entire country. It is entirely likely that the war will come to your home town next.

  1. You don't need to watch it.
    The first thing you need to learn is that you don't need to watch video of a mom in her car being executed by a death squad. Or video of a man in front of a donut shop being executed by a death squad. It is enough to educate yourself that it happened. Subjecting yourself to video of a person's death can be deeply disturbing. It's supposed to be. You will lose a piece of your humanity by watching it. Renee Good and Alex Pretti were good people and they did not deserve to die in this war. Watching them die on film will change you. Allow yourself the humanity to choose not to. It's a perfectly valid choice.

  2. Watch it once.
    If you do choose to watch the video, watch it only once. Tell yourself before you hit play, "I will only watch this one time." The natural human response is to reject what you saw, because it is violent and tragic and traumatic. The impulse will be to watch it again, and again, and again, to "make sure" that you saw the thing you definitely saw happen. Try your best to avoid this impulse. Instead, tell yourself that you will only watch this video one time, and that you will believe what you see happen actually happened.

  3. Sit for a few minutes.
    Close your device, turn off the phone, close the tablet, turn off the computer. Whatever device you watched the video on, turn it off, and simply sit in silence for a few minutes. Close your eyes, and accept what you saw. It can be helpful to repeat a few details silently about the video to yourself during this time. "I saw the ICE agent circle the car before drawing his weapon." Or "I saw Alex Pretty with a phone in his hand and his other one raised and empty." Do this for yourself. And do this for the humanity of the people who died. Sit with your discomfort. Acknowledge the brutality and violence that you witnessed, and how it made you feel.

  4. Open your eyes.
    Try to go on with your day without replaying the video itself in your mind's eye. Instead, acknowledge the details of what occurred, and integrate the emotional impact of the death you just witnessed in your understanding of reality. Did it make you angry? Good. Watching a death squad brutalize and murder someone in broad daylight should, in fact, make you angry. Do something productive with that anger. Did it make you sad? Good. These people were human beings with people who cared about them deeply and who loved and were loved in return. Do something productive with that sadness. Pour the emotions you are feeling into resisting this madness, in whatever way or ways you are capable of. Even the smallest act of resistance aids our cause. Do it with all the anger, all the sadness, all the whatever that now lives forever in your heart and mind.

I am going to follow up this post with a video of Alex Pretti's death at the hands of an anonymous death squad on Saturday, Jan 24th 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a portion of Nazi Occupied Territory of the United States of America.

I invite you to use what you learned in this post before watching it. And remember that the most important step is the first one. You can choose not to.

Okay I'm a teacher so let me explain in simple terms what happens the second the US invades Greenland:

  1. NATO dissolves.
    This would literally be a founding member of NATO invading another member nation. This would be a gross violation of one of our longest held treaties in our history. NATO as it exists, would not, and could not, survive.

  2. Instant war.
    This triggers the defense clause of the post-WW2 agreement, a clause specifically written to trigger if this exact thing were to ever happen. We are instantly at war with (at bare minimum!) the other 11 founding nations: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the UK.

  3. Financial ruin.
    The EU is the largest holder of US foreign debt and it isn't even close. With every country now left defending itself, most of the EU decides that loaning money to a nation currently at war with them is a bad idea. They call in the debts, stop extending us credit, and within a week every US based business from Amazon to Walmart experiences an extinction level event.

  4. We never, ever recover from this.
    There is absolutely no way on God's green earth any nation ever trusts us ever again after this. How the fuck could they? Even if we get rid of Trump, even if we get rid of elected Republicans, even if we get rid of MAGA as an ideology itself, all we have proven in the end is that our friendship is capricious and can't be relied on because it could just as easily flip flop in another four years.

  5. This isn't even including long term effects.
    This is literally just what happens the very moment we send American troops to invade Denmark soil. We lose. That's what happens. We lose forever.

The US spends about $106b/yr out of its $10.3t/yr budget on food stamps. That's about 1% of the yearly budget.

Let's put that in perspective. If you make $50,000/yr salary, about $80 of your taxes goes toward food stamps, and about $4,000 of it goes toward corporate subsidies (defense contracts, billionaire tax breaks, farms, distributors, oil and gas, etc).

If you're mad about the 80 bucks instead of the $4,000 dollars, you don't hate socialism, you hate poor people.
