"Pro-life" woman seeks abortion and gets denied

Screenshot from news article, posted to Twitter, and then to Reddit, reading ""Pro-life" woman seeks abortion and gets denied. Privileged people are used to authorities being reasonable and accommodating. They vote against rights for others thinking they'll be able to negotiate an exception for themselves. Then they get shocked when this fails. Farmer told the newspaper she's always identified as "pretty pro-life" —but she found herself seeking abortion care, anyway, even calling her state senator's office to seek help. She didn't find it. The office of her state senator, a Republican named Bill White, told her the state ban that was literally jeopardizing her life was actually "designed to protect the woman's life." Farmer recalled telling White's aide, "It's not protecting me... There's no chance for a baby; she's not going to make it. It's putting my life in danger." She continued, "I'm 41, it's not something I can recover from quickly. I could lose my uterus, there's a lot of things that could happen. We just want to move on, we just want to grieve." White's office promised it would talk to the state's Attorney General Eric Schmitt on her behalf and then connected Farmer with an anti-abortion crisis pregnancy center in the state. Farmer never heard from White's staff again."

These are people who don't want rights, they want privileges. They don't want equality, they want hierarchy. They can't say "gimme gimme", they say "take America back".

From who? Americans. They want to take what you have. Now that Republicans control the Federal Government they will start to take from each other.

This literally happened during the first Trump administration. Does no Trump supporter remember how they all fought for attention and sucked so badly?

KevonLooney ,

Doctors providing appropriate treatment despite the law is a very fucking long tradition in medicine.

It isn't. Name one time that happened.

"Do no harm" doesn't mean "risk your livelihood and freedom to perform an operation that a patient can get elsewhere".

KevonLooney ,

the whole genocide thing

No informed voter thought Trump would be better for Palestine than Kamala. Remember, people say one thing publicly when their private reasons are actually less popular.

The conservative Muslims who claimed they loved Palestine voted for Republicans because they are conservative. They are using the Palestinian people as political pawns, just like Hamas. They share conservative values with Republicans based on cultural issues. They differ on the justification for it, but they are all supporters of hierarchy. Same with conservative Latinos.

It's not popular to say "I like hierarchy and I want to be on top". Many supporters of hierarchy claim they love "individual rights" when they really want privileges for themselves. That's the reason why some people love the "Bill of Rights" but hate equality.

KevonLooney ,

My point is, most people don't actually care about Palestine enough to sway their votes. Same with most genocides. People don't like them but think other issues are more important. People care about issues that affect them directly. If they're not voting, it means they don't think a decision will affect them (rightly or wrongly).

Conservative Muslims (not Arabs, they're different) mention Palestine as a distraction. They were always going to vote Republican because they are conservative and have conservative values.

KevonLooney ,

Easy solution: don't cancel debt for people who live in those states. Say the Republicans blocked it. Move forward with everyone else.

KevonLooney ,

Lol. You are ignoring the fact that we already tax unrealized gains: property tax. And that's actually harder to value than something on a stock market.

An "unknown number"? When you open your Robinhood app, does it show numbers? Because if it doesn't I think you need to message their help desk.

The only proposals are for massive gains above $100 million. I think a 1% tax on that would be just fine.

KevonLooney ,

This is legitimately the dumbest argument. You will just dismiss any commenters who disagree with you ("that's your opinion, donate it to the government!").

Besides, there are literal billionaires who will actually be affected by this clamoring for it. No one who has less than $100 million will be affected. No I don't need a history lesson about income tax. If you want to live in a country without taxes, Somalia will welcome you.

P.S.: I have more than $20K in personal investments.

KevonLooney ,

Are you an electrician? Tell me one interesting thing about American residential electrical systems.

KevonLooney ,

Like drawing a picture of Pitbull from memory.

KevonLooney ,

This is also fake. Those are all incorrect.

KevonLooney ,

exist because of ridiculous social expectations

This is called "taking other people's opinions into account". That's what a society is. If you want your opinions listened to and acted on by others, you have to reciprocate.

Do you think "neurotypical" people love dealing with random people's opinions and needs? No, but they see the value in cooperating with others to get what they want. You are "expected" to wear clothes in public because I don't know how often you bathe yourself. You are "expected" to not yell in public because if every rando yelled whenever they wanted, life would be more stressful.

KevonLooney ,

Please re-read:

Do you think "neurotypical" people love dealing with random people's opinions and needs?

Disliking a suit and tie isn't some revelation to "normies". You are not a radical for thinking that. In fact, all the little things that annoy you probably annoy other people too.

This is a clue to easy small talk. Just say that something annoys you. "Oh man, this suit is murder in this heat." It's easy.

Either the answer will be "Yeah man, heh" or "nah, I like it". You have now successfully engaged in small talk.

KevonLooney ,

You know the answer to this. Because the CEO at your company sucks but you still need the money. Many people, even those in your industry, do not wear suits at work. I guarantee it.

KevonLooney ,

Uh, more like "Escape from New York"

KevonLooney ,

DC Trump's it in significance

Looks like you need to post about politics less.

Kamala Harris to propose up to $50,000 tax deduction for new small businesses ( www.reuters.com )

Vice President Kamala Harris will propose a tax deduction of up to $50,000 for new small businesses on Wednesday, a tenfold increase over existing relief and her latest economic policy aimed at winning over middle-class Americans after jumping into the presidential race over a month ago.

KevonLooney ,

When you close a business on paper you don’t suddenly lose access to services in the name of that business.

Yes you do. Your bank account is in the old business's name, and any lines of credit you have will be in that business's name as well. Doing anything for a new business is harder than for an established one. Once you explain "oh yeah I did own that one, I just changed the name for tax purposes" you sound like a scammer.

Banks and suppliers (good ones) are not going to waste their time figuring out your scheme. They will just drop you.

KevonLooney ,

It's true. In Massachusetts they had to use the NE Patriots plane to hide a shipment of PPE from China and protect it with the national guard (state military force):

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/02/bob-kraft-patriots-plane-massachusetts-masks-160936

For weeks, Baker has warned that Massachusetts is in desperate need of more protective equipment including masks, sanitizing wipes and gowns for health care workers on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis, especially as cases are expected to surge sometime between April 7 and April 17 in Massachusetts.

The Republican governor has raised those concerns with Trump. He told the president the federal government was outbidding Massachusetts on equipment — even after advising states to work on getting their own supplies. A week later, the Bay State was still being outbid and had only received a fraction of what it requested from the Strategic National Stockpile. Baker grew increasingly frustrated at a recent news conference, saying he’d seen confirmed orders for millions of pieces of gear “evaporate” before his eyes.

That's a terrible idea. His insurance won't cover him in an accident. If a passenger is injured he may be on the hook for the medical care.

KevonLooney ,

I mean, I would assume that someone who doesn't get a new enough car doesn't have enough money to pay for commercial insurance. Also offering people rides on the street is a bad idea (because you can get robbed) and possibly illegal. This is just running an unlicensed taxi service. Gypsy cabs have been around for hundreds of years. It's not a good idea.

KevonLooney ,

True. One of the biggest parts of modern-day American exceptionalism is thinking that only America has these problems. People who claim to dislike America unknowingly put it on a pedestal as "the worst thing ever", without acknowledging the very similar problems in their own backyard.

The main point of American exceptionalism is that "America is different from other countries", to an advanced degree. Some people mean "good" when they say "different", but it's not necessary.

American exceptionalism is the belief that the United States is either distinctive, unique, or exemplary compared to other nations.

Cool story bro

"the 1"?

What is NPR doing with this headline? Keep that on tiktok or Instagram reels. Make sure you post it at an angle on an unrelated picture, so it's slightly more attention grabbing too.

That's what quotation marks are for. As it is written, it needs a tongue out smiley face 😜

But still, going from a "unbiased" pollster to a high-tech bookie is clearly a money grab. This article tells us very little, except "it's a close horse race!" That sounds exactly like what a bookie would say to get more money on the match.

His focus has changed. I wonder how Nate Silver himself would treat a formerly good pollster who recently started an online betting arm? I suspect he would downgrade their reliability due to conflict of interest.

Wikipedia is one click away:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aral_Sea

Formerly the third-largest lake in the world with an area of 68,000 km2 (26,300 sq mi), the Aral Sea began shrinking in the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects. By 2007, it had declined to 10% of its original size

former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called the shrinking of the Aral Sea "one of the planet's worst environmental disasters".

The Aral Sea region is heavily polluted, with consequent serious public health problems. UNESCO has added historical documents concerning the Aral Sea to its Memory of the World Register as a resource to study the environmental tragedy.

KevonLooney ,

That's not how insurance works. They monitor average speed, acceleration, and braking, if anything. There's no correlation between mouth movement and accidents. What if someone is chewing gum? What about adjusting dentures? What about drinking coffee while parked?

Show me an actuarial table that includes "mouth movement" as a variable or admit this is just a middle manager trying something stupid.

KevonLooney ,

What a weird thing to say.

Edit: lol, 1 day old account

KevonLooney ,

This old man needs to step away and let someone younger run for president. He clearly has no idea what he's saying, and probably doesn't know what day / year it is. When will his party call for him to step down? How can he function without drooling all over his oatmeal?

KevonLooney ,

Nah, block and be done with it. They like attention.

KevonLooney ,

Reminder to anyone still working retail: if your job description isn't "janitor", you don't need to clean that up. It's a biohazard and they can pay more expensive people with better equipment to do it.

KevonLooney , (edited )

No, you will not "have to do it". Either they can afford to pay a qualified person to do it, or they can't. If they can't afford a more expensive person, they definitely can't afford to fire you. You are the cheap one.

Think about it: if they put themselves in this situation, they are going to end up cleaning it themselves. "Need money for rent and food"? If you have a crappy minimum wage job, you have the power. Literally no one above you wants to do your work. You can definitely tell them "no". Do you think there's some shortage of crappy minimum wage jobs?

KevonLooney ,

This is a child's thinking. A child wants the bully to get punched in the nose. An adult knows that this comes from insecurity. Bullies do not fear violence, they fear ridicule.

KevonLooney ,

Also, the Democratic election team didn't even dignify it with a response:

Newsweek has contacted the Harris campaign for comment via email.

KevonLooney ,

Um, 2 gallons for $16? That was probably fake or blended olive oil. That's $2 a quart. No one is selling you the good stuff for that price.

KevonLooney ,

You know Costco isn't squeezing the olives themselves? There's a lot of fake olive oil out there. They just blend in some vegetable oil or something.

KevonLooney ,

The funny thing is, if such a thing happened Kroger would definitely be upset. I say, if they want to haggle with you about every orange and apple, they can hire people to do it. If they use "AI", then they have to accept that people will easily game the system.

KevonLooney ,

These women have only a tenuous connection to VP Harris. This is just Democracy Now trying to highlight these women because they like activists. Harris is definitely not an activist; she's a lawyer and a politician. Yes there are good ones out there.

Better examples are:

KevonLooney ,

Lol. Pickleball stuff is getting more expensive than tennis equipment. It's actually a good time to get into a real sport.

You can buy new tennis balls for like $1 each, while pickleballs are more. Think about that: tennis balls are rubber and fuzz, hard to make. Pickleballs are just plastic. Same with the racquets. Pickleball stuff is just plastic and maybe a rubber grip. Tennis racquets can be all kinds of expensive carbon fiber.

KevonLooney ,

Good. You probably don't want a hatchet to be that sharp. You're not going to be doing anything delicate with it. Sharp blades have the edge bend or break easily.

KevonLooney ,

Honestly, 35 is too young to be president. 40 to 60 is probably the sweet spot. Make the upper limit 65 or 70 (but start negotiating at 60).

KevonLooney ,

JFK is not considered one of the best. He didn't even have a full term, so there's no way to know. People liked him because he was young and handsome and died that way.

He started the Vietnam War. His only real test was the Cuban Missile Crisis. He did adopt Keynesianism economic policies (over more classical policies) and proposed the bill that became the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Those are all important, but he honestly wasn't in office long enough to do much.

And besides, like you said he was 43, not 35. AOC would not be able to do anything because she doesn't have the relationships yet. Good presidents don't come from the House of Representatives. They come from the Senate (JFK, Obama), Governors (FDR), or Vice Presidents (Harris).

Republican group cites Dred Scott ruling as reason Kamala Harris can’t be president ( www.independent.co.uk )

The National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA) has cited the infamous 1857 Dred Scott Supreme Court decision, which stated that enslaved people weren’t citizens, to argue that Vice President Kamala Harris is ineligible to run for president according to the Constitution. ...

KevonLooney ,

Their interpretation isn't "originalist" or "strict" at all. It's just what they want to say, at any given moment. History would be very different if both of your parents had to be US citizens. The president of the US is required to be a "natural born citizen"

Of the 45[a] individuals who became president, there have been eight that had at least one parent who was not born on U.S. soil.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural-born-citizen_clause_(United_States)

For one, Donald Trump might not be president because his mother was born in Scotland.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/donald-trumps-immigrant-mother

For those (uninformed) Trump supporters who claim she was a citizen when little Donny was born, that's true but her immigration process was much easier than it is today. This is it, in its entirety:

On May 2, MacLeod left Glasgow on board the RMS Transylvania arriving in New York City on May 11 (one day after her 18th birthday). She declared she intended to become a U.S. citizen and would be staying permanently in America.

Though the 1940 census form filed by Mary Anne and her husband, Fred Trump, stated that she was a naturalized citizen, she did not actually become one until March 10, 1942.[1][6][7] However, there is no evidence that she violated any immigration laws prior to her naturalization, as she frequently traveled internationally and was afterwards able to re-enter the U.S.

[She] became a naturalized citizen in March 1942

Uh, Android is the alternative to Apple's iOS. That's your alternative. Android is much more customizable.

KevonLooney ,

It's better to be lucky than good at something. But there's a major difference between starting out middle class (or working class) and starting out wealthy.

The people who started and developed entire companies clearly had some skill. Massive intelligence isn't necessary, but they were not stupid. If they were stupid they would have already blown all the money. Compare what happens to lottery winners and you will see what I mean.

The difference is, future generations that inherit are more like lottery winners: they have no idea how to grow the money left to them. Plus they have no concept of staying under budget because they have always been rich. This is worse than a lottery winner because they already have an expensive lifestyle to maintain.

KevonLooney ,

That’s how close we came to living in a good timeline.

That's not how politics works. That's not even how time works.

If you want change, you have to do something. That's how we got the minimum wage, etc. Not by being in a "good timeline".

KevonLooney ,

"We're going to stop making new products. We've decided that we don't need more money."

Does that sound like a pharma company to you?
