    @ I wanted to favourite, but that didn't seem appropriate. This fediverse is ..... something. A lot of "but actually" performative something something. I tend to spend a lot less time on here than I used to, and I was expecting to. Take care of you, and I love your videos AND the blog. I read it and even see the links you put to it in your descriptions.

    I just tried to read a story (via a reddit link) and I go this error:

    This is the reddit link: https://www.reddit.com/r/UpliftingNews/comments/1qpf8i4/spanish_scientist_finds_cure_for_pancreatic/

    I'm assuming this is because I have two levels of adblock running (pihole and whatever is built into vivaldi). But is it something that anyone else has run into?

    Its not a story that I feel the need to jump through hoops to read, so I will probably just avoid this source automatically when I come across things on the interwebs.

    And I know that the internet runs on advertising, we can't get around that. But what we can do is prevent the one or two tech companies to track all our movements on the internet.

    I don't mind ads, especailly ones that are toplically relevant to the article I'm reading, or my location, or the location of the business/news org/etc of the site owner.

    I just don't think Google/Facebook/etc needs to know that I was on that site at one point so they can build ever larger profiles on me and my kids.

    The Canada Press distilling the "feud" with Carney and not Canada as a whole, annoys me.

    The deal that was announced with China is a HUGE win for Canadian exports and a minor win for cheap BYD EVs, which is another big win for drivers (to the hit on Tesla).

    If you ahve been following along, you will know that I have been having hardware challenges with my framework, and have been thinking about switching to Macbook for a spell.

    Final straw, I'm not getting another Framework laptop. The fan in my daily is starting to make odd noises when at low RPM, again, and from past experience I know its only a matter of time before it starts making a horrible whining noise to the point that I can't use it for meetings, or even have it in the room for meetings.

    The fact that both machines have this issue, and I've replaced them a couple times, is unacceptable.

    Jeff OP ,
    @Jeff@bluenoser.me avatar

    I'm actually thinking about buy a secondhand macbook and find a way to transfer my stickers, just to have something that works as a daily machine, that I don't need to worry about. Maybe a Air that doesn't even have a fan.

    @Jeff@bluenoser.me avatar

    I think my framework heard me because it won’t turn on this morning and the charging light won’t come on. It’s either something simple or the mainboard is shot.

    Not the way I wanted to start the weekend.

    Now I’m looking at MacBooks because they are approximately the same price of a modern x86 laptop and maybe I will get more than a few years out of it.

    If I get a MacBook Air there won’t even be a fan to fail.

    I just noticed that I'm a configurate file nerd now. When I see an app/tool/etc use TOML for configuration it moves up a few notches.

    I have been using VSCodium for a few years now. This morning I opened it up and they have AI Agent mode slop in there. My understanding was that Codium was the same as Code but with the telemetry removed. I really would have thought that LLM Agents would be under that same purging.

    Other than vim or emacs, which I'm sure will be recommended; what other "general/simple" code editors are out there that I can try. Ideally something that makes working with Jupyter, .DOT, etc a breeze.

    @mcc @fn0rd A couple of quick searches and I think Sublime will do everything I need. I will do a bit more looking and give it a go next week. I may give Kate a try first, I prefer open source, but also don't mind paying people to do good things, and make good tools.

    Today's writing tip, from a reader: your first sentence is crucial. You'd be surprised how many people decide whether to read on, from the first sentence alone.

    Personally, I flip to somewhere near the middle to assess the writing quality and style, but most people don't do it that way, I think?

    Anyway, it might be intriguing to find out what your favorite first sentences are, of any book you've read.

    @kimlockhartga I read a "new" book from an author I like, and well, the first couple of pages were a slog. If I didn't have a well established history with them, I would 100% of just dumped it in the DNF pile.

    That first sentence is super critical. bookstodon@a.gup.pe icon bookstodon group

    @vkc This is really bloody annoying. Sure, I'm old, I like reading things, but I get it, writing doesn't pay anymore.

    I really like your analogy about the guitar player, its spot on.

    I'm glad you keep doing what you do, even with the BS that it exposes you to. I know I'm more informed and my interests in Linux and the terminal continue to be piqued.

    "I want to speak directly to Americans," says Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "This is a choice that will harm Canadians...but will have real consequences for you."

    Jeff ,
    @Jeff@bluenoser.me avatar

    @w7voa There are too many fellow Canadian leaders that are ready to bend knee (Mo and Smith for example), I'm just glad that we still have Trudeau to be the level head. If it was me, I would be taking it further than just tit-for-tat, I would have pre-emptively added export taxes on the goods they want, last week, before he had the chance.

    He telegraphed his punch, and when that happens, you don't let them take a swing.

    What is your favorite browser? Feel free to share why.

    Jeff ,
    @Jeff@bluenoser.me avatar

    @jon I’ve been using Vivaldi lately, but I also like Firefox and Librewolf. However the internet today feels like that of 2000, so many websites only work with todays IE (Chrome), so yeah, the options are either Chromium or Gecko; and the latter doesn’t work for all websites.

    It’s a very sad state of affairs.

    @vkc The only place that I look for NEC references is Mike Holt's forum, and his references. https://forums.mikeholt.com

    I haven't been there in a while as the work that I have been doing in the states lately has been relatively straightforward, but it is still likely pretty good.

    If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

    No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

    Jeff ,
    @Jeff@bluenoser.me avatar

    @molly0xfff I've thought about it a lot, and there are two things that I miss. Time based feeds (forums, oldtwitter, old facebook, blogs, etc) and that sites like forums, etc were incentivised to build community vs trying to hack attention.
