GamesMissed

@[email protected]

Challenged to live-toot games that I, apparently, should have played decades ago? I dabble in #retrogaming, #retrocomputing, #pinball, #3DPrinting, and other stuff as well.

If you're any kind of decent person, I'm happy to be here with you. Your biology and choices don't bother me. I'm on the side that welcomes foreigners, LGBTQ+ people, neurodiverse folks, and everyone else who wants to read my thoughts about computers and games and fun.

No Nazis. Ever. Under any circumstances.

Wii U, one of my favorite consoles turns 13 years old today. It had a slow OS but a quite cozy one, probably the top one that that feeling.

@djlink I was late to the party -- I bought a second-hand Wii U in 2021 -- but it's been a great system for me and my family. Wii U games are cheap here (I'm in the United States, most titles can be had for $10), and it's backwards compatible with my entire Wii and Gamecube libraries and their controllers. Ours is still connected to the TV, I don't expect it'll lose that place for a while.

Steam Deck update: I found an old SteamDeck running OS 3.6 and installed Death by Scrolling. It ran fine and was butter smooth. I then updated the OS to 3.7 and now it's choppy and stutters. The plot thickens.

GamesMissed ,
@GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

@grumpygamer I'm on 3.7.17, the Beta update channel, and its not happening with me. I just did another three runs with Bucket, no stuttering at all.

@grumpygamer I tried it out for half an hour (all the time I could spare) this morning, on my Steam Deck. Runs great, I got as far as the 5th level.

I was cleaning up today and sent my NES crashing to the floor. I know they're sturdy and all, but it's 40 years old, and I was worried. I quickly set up the TV in the office and played through "The Great Gatsby" (it only takes 10 minutes, sadly) to make sure everything was still working properly.

Usually the Nintendo is set up outside; this may be the first time the cat has ever seen it running. He was perplexed.

    @djlink Them's fighting' words! 2000, or 7 as a close second.

    I stayed on 2000 until switching to Ubuntu Linux in 2006 or '07, but used 7 at work for a few years and at home for gaming. It was good at not getting in my way, which is most of what I want in an operating system.

    thinking in getting one of those tiny air blowers (not the canned spray) to clean up keyboards, PC, laptops, electronics, if anyone has any suggestions or different alternatives let me know.

    @GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

    @djlink I've used a Fulljion air duster (https://fulljion.com/product/compressed-air-duster) for a few years now. I like it a lot, far better than the old canned spray. This one isn't quiet, but it's not nearly as loud as my vacuum cleaner.

    My prize find of the day: Pin Bot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin_Bot_(video_game)) for the Nintendo Entertainment System!

    I had heard that this was a very good console pinball game, so I've been curious about it since I hooked my spouse's childhood NES up to the TV. The edge connector of the cartridge needed some cleaning (at first it would show corrupted graphics and then hang), but after a spray of Deoxit (I'm getting fancier) and some cotton swabs it works fine.

    This game is amazing.

    A photograph of a television displaying the video game "Pin Bot" for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The screen shows a graphical depiction of a pinball table in mostly purple and blue hues, with a few other colors thrown in. The current score of player 1 is 146040.
    A photograph of a television displaying the end score screen for the video game "Pin Bot" for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The screen shows has the text, "Player 1 Enter Your Name," followed by the English alphabet to allow the player to select three letters. The player managed the 4th highest score, with a total of 4 869 070.

    Particle effects! Perfect scrolling and split-screen! Digital voice clips! The ball can turn into a triangle AND IT CHANGES THE BOUNCE BEHAVIOR TO MATCH!

    I have made it as far as the third table variant. I need to read a manual for this to find out how deep the rabbit hole goes.

    If I had seen this game in 1988, I don't know that I would have been nearly as impressed by Epic Pinball in 1993.

    @vkc I didn't buy a Wombat only because they were out of stock when I was looking for such a device (I did get a FloppyEmu from BMOW, though, and that's great).

    Instead, I ended up with a USB4VC (https://www.tindie.com/products/dekuNukem/usb4vc-usb-inputs-on-retro-computers/), and that's been in use for a year now and does very well. Only one-way, though, unlike the Wombat.

    Got this for free because battery is dead and doesn’t save anymore. Really fun game, I guess the precursor for the Mario vs Donkey Kong games.

    @djlink That's one of the great Nintendo classics - there are 100 levels (I think I'm remembering that correctly), and it gets better as you go along.

    The battery is replaceable, if you have basic soldering skills. Definitely worth it.

    GamesMissed ,
    @GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

    @djlink If you don't already know someone who could solder it, check in at a local makerspace. An automotive audio shop should also have people with good soldering skills.

    Best of luck!

    @vkc I feel like some young Apple designer who wasn't alive in the '80s read about unsticking the hard drive in an old Mac by lifting it up and dropping it, and thought it would be fun to call back to that pastoral time.

    @gamingonlinux That art style is fascinating, like someone took my memories of Ultima IV on an Apple ][ and loaded it into a Game Boy Advance. That low pixel-count font is absolutely something that you would see on a Nintendo handheld.
