“From K-9 units to a personally owned Black Hawk Helicopter, multiple resources were deployed to assist in the search for Porter and Stasko.”

That is from a USA Today article about the search for two missing Colorado elk hunters. (they were found dead.)
Who privately owns a Blackhawk helicopter?

While he posts here frequently, this is quite a nice blog post.

"For an example of [the butler], I recommend HBO's The Gilded Age's depictions of Mr. Church and Mr. Bannister. Particularly, I think the episode S1E4 reveals a lot about the multifaceted role played by butlers, including setting the table properly."

By the way, for any state you've lived in, check their unclaimed property website. It probably won't amount to much (20 bucks after you've signed over all your information or some such nonsense), but it might. I got 160 bucks for little trouble. No fricking idea what I did that meant me missing 160 bucks, but here we are.

I started downloading the movie Jaws the other day. Sadly, after one megabyte my computer died.

"No, but I wonder if any man before us ever thought his time a good time for unicorns.”

This book is newer (still 6 years old), and also great!

"As ecologists, we’re trained to study life in “nature,” which we have come to believe means the absence of humans. This bias is even built in to our most important surveys of animal life. The breeding bird survey, for instance, the biggest structured survey of birds in North America, excludes parts of the United States that are heavily urbanized. It excludes the places we live."

Another of my favorite nature book reads and listens. It's another older book, but a great guide to field life. The guy spent several months each year observing a baboon troop in Kenya, for 21 years.

A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist’s Unconventional Life Among the Baboons

"If you had watched Marcus Welby, M.D. once and possessed a box of Band-Aids, you were now the most knowledgeable and best-equipped practitioner for a hundred miles."

Rat Island: Predators in Paradise and the World's Greatest Wildlife Rescue

"Once a remote sanctuary for enormous flocks of seabirds, the island gained a new name when shipwrecked rats colonized, savaging the nesting birds by the thousands. Now, on this and hundreds of other remote islands around the world, a massive-and massively controversial-wildlife rescue mission is under way."

It's an older book, but one I greatly enjoy.

The Sparrow by Mary Doria russell and the second half of the book (allegedly) Children of God...

Thoughts? I've heard good things about it

"The Sparrow tells the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a scientific mission entrusted with a profound task: to make first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end."

@Da_Gut bookstodon@a.gup.pe icon bookstodon group it’s a few years since I read it. Did enjoy it. (May count as a spoiler but I feel I have say it) But found the description of maiming of a character difficult- still a good book, but it impacted my enjoyment of it and may be too much for some.

“Who are you?” I ask the darkness, unable to keep the tremor from my voice.
“A friend.”
It’s a man’s voice, muffled and deep.
“Friends don’t lurk in the gloom,” I say.
“I didn’t say I was your friend, Mr. Davies.”
