This is a Bittern. I’d never heard of these birds before, but they are interesting… First off, they stretch their necks upward when they’re trying to hide, because the stripes along their necks and torso appear to melt into the tall grasses, helping to disguise them.

And secondly, their bird call is deep and gurgling, almost like a glug of water down a drain. It far over the wetlands they call home, and stands out because it’s so low in register.

We have them here in Humboldt County in northern California along the Redwood Coast. This bird was requested by a patron who stopped by my art booth this last year.

It’s entirely . I use Procreate on my iPad Pro, and draw each stroke by hand. Here’s the speedpaint: https://makertube.net/w/6HwSDNNfoR2AFbiYXFCXeC

And here’s the livestream recording of when I made it: https://makertube.net/w/gvF2jbFYVwqnRcF1cp5R7B

It’s available as a greeting card on my Goimagine art shop, but unfortunately only for US customers right now. Here’s the link: https://goimagine.com/bittern-single-bird-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

"The Fox and the Woodcutter", a fable attributed to Aesop.

I feel this piece is very appropriate to today's world.

Essentially, the fox is running from a hunter and asks a woodcutter permission to hide in his house.

The woodcutter says yes, but when the pursuing hunter asks him if he’s see the fox, he says no while at the same time pointing ferociously toward the fox’s hiding place within.

The hunter doesn’t get it, and moves on. The fox pops out and starts to scamper away and escape. The woodcutter says, “Hey, I saved your life and I get no thanks?!?”

And the fox says, “Your actions didn’t match your words. I will not thank someone who silently tried to kill me while their mouth spoke lies.”

This was done entirely in Procreate, with no generative image assistance at any part of the process. You can watch the speedpaint video here: https://makertube.net/w/dSqHw7fyPNeuuKGn2TyzvK

This piece was created at the behest of a new friend who gave me an idea for Humboldt County regionally recognizable mammals. I wanted to do something that wasn't a bird, and she said I should do a Douglass Squirrel, which seem to be everywhere here.

I didn't know what a Douglas Squirrel was, so I had to look it up. Apparently, they're pretty common here in northern California, and they're one of the few squirrels that actually change the color of their coat as winter comes along. In the summer, they have a brown and orange coloration. But in the winter it shifts to gray.

My friend said they were all over her trees in her yard, and being in the area of the US that is known for its Redwood trees and thick forests, I can see how there might be a lot of them!

So I tried rendering fur again, which I hadn't done in a very very long time. I realized I'd sort of fallen into a comfy little routine for making my art, so stepping outside the box of my regular subject matter was a good thing. It was very challenging, but I think it turned out nicely!

I was able to use this image for a cute little sassy card when she suggested, "Don't ask me about my nuts! Just. Don't." as a tagline on the card. They've sold quite a few at my booth, and I'll soon be listing them on my storefront.

I had a person stop by my art vendor booth one evening when I was doing Friday Night Market here in Eureka, CA. It’s a street fair that combines performance, art, food, beer/wine, and a Farmer’s Market. It’s quite fun.

But anyway, they suggested I think about doing a Northern Spotted Owl. They’d seen my other owls but were looking for one that was specific regionally. We have a Northern Spotted Owl in our local zoo, and she’s a real favorite. So I thought I should jump on the opportunity. I was all too happy to continue my local flora and fauna journey, creating work that’s all about the Redwood Coast.

So I made this little one initially as a card itself, but then used the same image to create a nice Art Nouveau image. The final piece is called “Forest Fellow”. I used Procreate and drew it all by hand—no generative slop tools at any point in the process. You can watch the livestream recordings of its making here:

Ravens were a frequent request by visitors to my booth. I did a series of three of them then did an Art Nouveau expression using two of them.

This is the first--Raven #1.
