Apparently, there was a weird bug in Ubuntu Linux version 25.10's 'date' command that blocked the automatic software updates check under GUI. However, If you have been manually updating your system using apt or otherwise, you are likely unaffected by this issue.

To enable updates via GUI run:

sudo apt install --update rust-coreutils

    I'd pay for a high-quality handmade sketch (a good one, not some stick figures) that depicts what I desperately want to ask AI to devise just because I like the idea of asking it to imagine its own demise: I'm picturing a scene where the data centers have been overgrown with dangling vines and weeds creeping out of server cabinets, which have long ago been stripped for scarce parts in the battle against the machines. I'd settle for a more gently apocalyptic theme as well.

    @gerrymcgovern I have a bit of a problem with these "uses x amount of water" comparisons. Its not like farming or industrial processes. Yes, it is probably a frivolous use of the energy used to get, use and drain the water, but the water isn't gone. In probably all cases its simply warmer.

    On the back of this you could pair up with an industrial process that needs the heat.

    Bredroll ,
    @Bredroll@mas.to avatar

    @gerrymcgovern yuk, that is pretty bad. Still my main problem with it is the frivolity of the energy use in the first place rather than the mitigations or greenwashing they've not done :(

    @CatHerder @gerrymcgovern it's not just energy, it's the general waste that they get to produce for free without any cost to them. @gerrymcgovern the techno-cleptocracy is the biggest driving force in the Western world, pushing fir climate denialiam and normalising toxic consumerism with endless "buy latest gizmo" and profit driven race to the bottom. Controlling population growth on a macro scale isn't going to happen to rich people. The only thing that will hit effectively is making the cost to repair the environment included in the cost to sell the worst products and services.
