Another Microsoft outage, another reminder that over half of the projects I use / contribute to are hosted on and exclusively available on this proprietary forge.
It's time to factor this into decisions whether to use software, points-- for GitHub.

Stuff I tried accessing today:
nixpkgs repo (can't update my computer)
manifests
wayland compositor
music player

Would love to see more migrations to free forges, and excited for to make this easier!

Other projects I use every day:
spec & clients like and
& password manager
text editor
LSP

I'd love to encourage these projects to jump ship, and I celebrate those that do. I am much more likely to provide quality contributions if you host on your own forge, or a free one, and I am sure I'm not alone in this.

GitHub is hostile to FOSS and, despite giving away lots of free-of-cost stuff I believe ultimately hurts us.

So I think I'll need to read up on it a bit. I understand that "Passkeys" try to do something similar as SSH pubkeys.
But do you know a good technical explainer of what's going on and how it works?

(Yes, I could search myself but I am looking for recommendations of articles you have read that you found helpful and clear.)

EDIT: https://passkeys.io did make some things clearer.

@tante The major problem with passkeys is that Google, Apple and Microsoft abuse(d) them as a method to enforce a vendor lock-in: "Here, have this nice convenient feature as long as you stick with our accounts and devices." Now, it looks like we will be able to export passkeys from their accounts but passkey management needs to become convenient for everyone to make them an attractive alternative.

And we still lack truly free options to manage them across all devices. / can do it but there is no point in using KeePass if not all platforms have at least one client supporting passkeys.

Kind of reminds me of PGP keys, which are still a pain in the ass to manage across multiple devices, even after all these years.

@MTZ@lemmy.world avatar MTZ Good luck! I'm looking forward to following your journey! I've been playing a lot with lately too, and feel quite happy with my current setup ( @nextcloud@mastodon.xyz avatar nextcloud for photos and docs, @gitea@social.gitea.io avatar gitea for code, dots and docs, and by @grunfink@comam.es avatar grunfink to replace corporate social networks/media. I'd like to go further with and who knows what else, so the advice you've gotten is really valuable to me as well. Like you I also had a terrible experience, only with Apple and my Iphone where it didn't accept my (correct) pincode, and I couldn't log in to Apple ID due to not having access to my phone. I ended up having to reset my phone after much banging my head against the wall. I decided then that I would not be reliant on that thing for access to everything else. I've ordered a Community Phone by @jolla@techhub.social avatar jolla to replace my Iphone. No more for me.

Hello, I’m hosting a server behind 2.10 and made the following test:

Tuning Caddy to allow only curves:

	tls {
		curves x25519mlkem768
	}

Trying to connect with Mac -> OK
Trying to connect with client -> Fail

Without the tuning, the Bitwarden Android client will happily connect to the server.

Is it a problem with the Bitwarden Android client or with Android, or both?

Bitwarden is from the us, but is open-source and you can find a European hoster.
