Painting of Hobbiton Hill at dawn after fresh snowfall. Hobbit doors set into a hillside, with warm light coming from the windows, smoke from the chimneys, pine trees and bare trees in the landscape. The sun is rising but stars are still visible.
SAURON: I shall create three rings for the elves, seven for the dwarf lords and nine for mortal men
HOBBITS: wow ok none for us cool
SAURON: and thus I shall have dominion over all the civilised races of middle earth
HOBBITS: WOW

I'm re-reading The Hobbit for the first time in 33 years. As a child it was a book I re-read frequently. Probably a hundred times or more.
I'm in the middle of chapter 2 and my thoughts are so far: I am now slightly older than Bilbo but I don't remember him seeming old, probably because he was the only one without a beard.
We've just come to the trolls and their names are William, Bert, and Tom. Again, not a detail I recall but it's cracking me up.
I would so love to get my hands on prints of a few of those illustrations. My weak-butt google-fu in this area doesn't bring up anything useful. Any pointers?
I'm re-reading The Hobbit at the moment. Gandalf might not be a conjurer of cheap tricks, because he's only packing the expensive, high-caliber stuff. ( files.mastodon.social )
