A screen shot from MacOS 9 showing EtherPeek capturing Ethernet packet data with two packets opened for inspection detailing the early stages of ImageWriter discovery. On the right is the Chooser with the AppleTalk ImageWriter selected and on the right a printer named "Soft ImageWriter" is highlighted.
Many thanks to NJRoadFan and
@dmark for investigating and merging a fix to the Netatalk issue I filed where StuffIt Expander causes disconnects with AppleShare 3.7.x.
Turns out that you can install a later version of AppleShare that does not send malformed data to the server, but it's great to see a workaround since affected versions of AppleShare are included with Mac OS 8 and 8.1.
It’s great to see a steady stream of commits to netatalk!
A hill at sundown. The upper part of the sky is starry and dark blue, fading to a golden glow on the horizon, especially on the right side. Sitting on top of the hill is a classic Macintosh computer, the size of a building. Its screen is facing to the right, and appears to be mostly dark except for a single white dialogue box in the middle of the screen. It's not clear what the dialogue box says, but anyone who's used a Mac in the 80s or 90s will recognize this as the "it is now safe to switch off your Macintosh" message. While the computer is mostly in silhouette, the right edge is illuminated by the last rays of sunlight. On the left side, a small door is open at the base of the computer, revealing golden light from inside. A figure stands silhouetted in the doorway. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".
@j
@superball Actually no, I was referring to the last day of #marchintosh, the month when retro Apple folks show off their various devices on #globaltalk, an ad-hoc internet built on 80s/90s tech. I always like seeing what people get up to; I was going to see if I could get a few of my old machines online this time, but I never got a chance.
It's pretty nerdy, but I never get tired of stuff like seeing someone surf Mastodon on an Apple II.
W 2021 pierwszy raz odbyło się wydarzenie pod nazwą MARCHintosh. Zainspirowani sukcesem projektów DOScember i SEPTandy użytkownicy zabytkowych komputerów spod znaku tęczowego jabłka postanowili każdego roku w marcu wspólnie tworzyć treści związane z tymi maszynami. Jedną z najciekawszych inicjatyw w ramach MARCHintosha jest z pewnością GlobalTalk o którym więcej w artykule na naszej stronie. #MARCHintosh#globaltalk#retrocomputing https://www.cpp.org.pl/globaltalk-siec-uzytkownikow-zabytkowych-makow/
There is a new alpha version of #GlobalTalk chat available on Blackbird.
This new version 0.3 uses a lower level of AppleTalk communication instead of HyperCard's built-in Process-to-Process communication method.
This lower level method is asynchronous and can wait for results without locking up the UI, so hopefully it solves the massive lag issues people have been having.
If anyone is around right now to test it out, please do! #MARCHintosh
i can't believe it - went to bed last night with zero articles written on the new https://globaltalk.network kiki, and woke up this morning with 5 new articles!! you folks work fast 🙏
incredible to see it just --- working! my vile php demonolatry apparently worked
A photo of a Quadra 605 with a MAG displays 768x1024 pivot portrait display set in portrait mode, black and white, with Apple Internet Router running. It's sitting on an 80s style upright desk with external cdrom, nokia cell phone, newton, quicktake 200 and various other hypernostalgic bits and pieces.
For #marchintosh and #globaltalk , I am running a RealAudio and RealVideo server. If you wanna remember and experience what streaming in the 90s was like, head on over to http://68kradio.ddns.net ! The site has been tested on MacWeb 2.0 and NetScape 2.0, and yes, you can listen on a 68k Mac! A PowerPC is recommended for the best experience.
Ok I nearly give up. Why can’t these two machines see each other via AppleTalk?
These two machines are on the same subnet and can ping each other. The SE is running 7.1 and is connected via WiFi (BlueSCSI). Network is ubiquiti, igmp snooping disabled, nothing in the security logs.
Hoping for a simple fix so I don’t have to dig through packet captures.
An ImageWriter II AppleTalk card, in anticipation of hopefully another #globaltalk filled #marchintosh
And some gorgeous, irresistible floppy disks!
A close-up shot of the image writer II Apple talk option card new in the box and in front of that a 10 pack of Nashua brand floppy disks in a clear white case.
