Edit: There's another recent NES FF1 patch.

"This patch forces both the Black Belt and the Master to grow four points of magic resistance every level instead of suddenly changing from 4 to 1 or 1 to 4 on class change.

It can be applied to either the vanilla ROM or an FF1 Restored ROM and it’ll work fine either way."
