As someone who doesn't leave locations services turned on all the time, I find both Co-map and Organic annoying. Each time I open the app they ask multiple times for me to turn on location services. If I'm searching in the for a store, I don't need to know where I am. The only time I need to show my location is when setting a route.

For this reason, I continue to use OSMAnd. I do like the simple UI of Co-map and Organic but detest apps throwing unnecessary popups at me.

Street Complete is kinda fun to use. I tend to drive everywhere so I seldom get a chance to use it.

RodgeGrabTheCat ,
@RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works avatar

If I'm zoomed in on my region the app should be searching that area first.

Same. I fallback to Startpage when duck isn't giving me results but that doesn't happen too often.

Helping people install a full-featured web content blocker, such as ublockorigin@lemmy.ml icon uBlockOrigin was already necessary for . Now it's necessary for .

Likewise, helping people set up a VPN from their phones to a non-logging network ad- and tracking-filtering server is resistance.

Likewise, refusing everything it is your right to refuse to supporters or enablers of surveillance capitalist corporations is resistance.

Canada needs to stop shipping all good to the usa. No more potash, lumber, steel, aluminum, rare minerals, just to name a few.

If the United States of America was renamed, what should it be?

To my knowledge (that is, a couple YouTube videos on the topic, this could be outdated/false information), there are some people who aren't happy that the U.S. names itself after the continent of America (implying that they have a right to all of America, manifest destiny to the max). Whether that is true or not, naming stuff is ...

I gave this a try during the drama with syncthing-fork (new maintainer without a heads up from catfriend1). Had no issues sending from Fedora. GrapheneOS wouldn't send any files. Too bad.

I find that finding solutions to the problems that generate the feelings of doom is a good way to fight those feelings. Have a plan or several plans. You don't have to solve the issue just find ways to get through it easier with less stress.

Example: Where I live, the power grid is garbage. Too much money has been diverted to the stockholders instead of grid maintenance. We've lost power three times since Christmas. There is a storm coming on Monday and the odds favor the power is going off. I have a checklist of what to do before and during the outage which makes it easier to get through.

RodgeGrabTheCat ,
@RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works avatar

I used to work in restaurants and I often overheard a co-worker proclaim "I gotta get drunk tonight". This was always on their last work day of the week. If someone turns to booze as a stress coping mechanism, I consider them an alcoholic.

Another co-worker, on a gas-drilling rig, and I were having a discussion about common causes of death. At one point I claimed that alcohol is responsible for more death than xyz (many years ago, I don't remember the details). He got offended because I said something mean about booze. Taking that and the fact his first stop when he got back on dry land was the liquor store, I'm pretty sure he was an alcoholic.

Common knowledge in a privacy community.

If the color of the Sun was orange, wouldn't the clouds and everything white also be orange? My friend is adamant that 30 years ago the "real" Sun was orange but got replaced with a white LED.

I asked him "what color were the clouds back then?" and he said they were white. I asked him what happens if I take an orange light and light up something that's white with it. He ignored me. He went on about how everyone in his age group remembers the Sun being orange, and by me questioning him, I'm calling him and all his ...

Last year I used Android (tablet with a physical keyboard and mouse was my "laptop") and nothing else. I was happy with Proton Unlimited. Lots of features and works great.

In April of 2025 I bought a used laptop and started using Linux Fedora Workstation.

It didn't take long to see how little support Proton gives to the Linux community. Protonvpn is garbage on Linux. Their app has almost no features.

Saying development is slow is being kind, it took Proton 8 years to give Linux users split-tunneling and we still have to give up Netguard and the killswitch to use it.

I watch Youtube with Freetube on my laptop and was getting blocked at least 6 times per day.

I tried Mullvadvpn and have gotten blocked only two of three times in the past two weeks.

Downloading from Proton Drive is very slow. Upload is quick enough, it's good for archiving. No Linux app so I use the browser.

Most of their other services work great. I have no issues with their email (through a browser) or ProtonPass via the app.

My account is up in June and I'm moving to separate services. Already on Mullvadvpn.

Works fine. Android app doesn't require Google push notifications, unlike Proton. I like that they aren't chasing the AI pipe dream.

I'm not a fan of how they use their blog to shit on other privacy projects.

A few weeks ago, they recommended CalyxOS. I informed them that Calyx is a dead project. The next week Calyx is getting recommended again. The person(s) writing their blog doesn't seem to have a clue even when giving the information on a platter.

Generally speaking, it's illegal to use government access for personal reasons. Now if you are talking about civilian parents:

Put TailsOS on a thumb drive. No traces left of your activities once the drive is unplugged.

Watch for basic consumer level spyware on your smartphone.

No vpn. Use Tor either through TailOS on a laptop/desktop or Orbot and Tor browser on a phone.

Don't talk in your sleep.
