The companies have launched a pilot program in Atlanta, where “during the rare event a vehicle door is left ajar, preventing the car from departing, nearby Dashers are notified, allowing Waymo to get its vehicles back on the road quickly.”

    Seems pretty reasonable. I’m sure Waymo would much rather have a way to close them remotely, but that means a lot of moving parts to maintain and break if they fix. Since most people probably do close the door behind them, the marginal cost of paying a Door Dash fee for the occasional open door probably works out cheaper than retrofitting and maintaining door controllers on the entire fleet.
