    Targetted advertisement.

Like. Cars are actually useful, the problem is the idea everyone must have a car. 90% of the problems with genAI are rooted on “who controls it”. Capitalism and religion aren’t inventions, they’re social developments.

Targetted ads though? They picked something people already hated (ads) and made it even worse, by eroding your privacy. And it isn’t like the sites showing targeted ads are getting more money as a result, since the price-per-view of the old style ads reached the rock bottom because of the introduction of targetted ads. This shit should’ve been forbidden already dammit.

Done right, targeted ads have their place. There are a few (fairly niche) companies I sometimes see ads from. They are effectively a polite “We have something new, you might be interested in.”

The line, for me is between infomational ads, and manipulation ads. If their goal is to get me to buy their product, without my conscious, informed decision, then I have a big issue with them! Unfortunately most ads we get now are of the latter. I don’t need to know Starbucks exists. They want me to think of them more, so I buy more coffee from them. Fuck that noise.

When targeted ads first rolled out, apparently they were worse than normal ads in dollar per sale than normal ads were. At least for small businesses.

The atock market is the answer to “What if wealthy people had an unlimited source of additional wealth?”
