Hard to say exactly what the cause was, as I don't know what username they used on lemm.ee (doesn't seem to be the same one that was used on Reddit), but it's most likely:

1. They did not verify their e-mail address
2. They did not agree to follow lemm.ee rules in the sign-up form

We'll get some more control over images when 1.0 comes, I will take a look at it again then, but in general the new user cooldown for image uploads has really significantly reduced the amount of image related abuse we have seen.

@Character_Locked@lemm.ee please understand, nobody on our admin team is getting paid to moderate disgusting images, they are volunteering to do it, and it takes a mental toll. Also, image hosting itself is not free. Our donations right now are barely breaking even with server costs. So realistically, our options are not "current situation vs fully unrestricted image uploads", they are "current situation vs completely burned out admin team and costs increasing beyond donations".

Our servers are all hosted in Finland indeed, but we use Cloudflare for DDoS protection etc. Clients/bots/scripts/etc (like FediDB) don't see our server IP addresses directly, they see Cloudflare IP addresses. FediDB uses the IP address it sees to assume what country the server is in.

The same is true for a bunch of other Lemmy servers as well - a lot of the ones FediDB shows as "United States" are actually hosted in Europe (or elsewhere).

Lemmy software resolves it automatically - it marks such instances as dead and stops sending activities to them.

Our pict-rs (image software) was having some issues, but it should be resolved now!

Can you try clearing all your cookies & then logging in again? I'm not sure if clearing the cache also clears cookies in Firefox.

There isn't any way to do this with the default lemmy-ui unfortunately

Usually, this is caused by external servers blocking the lemm.ee server from downloading images. This is happening surprisingly regularly, I'm not sure if there's a good fix for this..

The YouTube thing does indeed appear to be a bug, I will look into that separately. Thanks for reporting!

We did indeed have a delay with outgoing federation around the time you made this post, but it already recovered shortly after. Sorry for the inconvenience.

We had a temporary issue with generating different formats/sizes for existing images. I believe the issue is now fixed, our server is going through a backlog of missing files currently and regenerating them. I believe all broken images will be fixed within the next few hours.

Hey, I see you luckily already received a relevant response here, but I still want to clarify: this community is for lemm.ee support, but your issue seems to be related to !politicalmemes@lemmy.world, so actually lemm.ee admins wouldn't be able to help you with this.

For now, I just redeployed all of our servers completely, but as I don't know the actual root cause of the issue yet, I'm still investigating to figure out if anything more is needed.

Sorry for the delay in updating the status page - I actually had gone out for lunch just a few minutes before the downtime started, so I didn't even realize anything was up until I was back at my computer about 45 minutes later 💀

Actually, we're using Hetzner's cloud load balancer for lemm.ee. But if this issue repeats in the near future, then I will definitely consider setting up something else.

There are two useful sections on https://status.lemm.ee for this - firstly, there is an automated check for federation with all other instances on the bottom of the page, and everything there being red is a definite sign that something is wrong with lemm.ee itself. Secondly, near the top of that page, I will always write a status message manually when I discover & start work on any issues. This second part can have a bit of a delay, as it requires manual input from myself, but I have updated it every time we had any issues so far.

I believe I discovered and fixed one cause for intermittent slow page loads, but please let me know if you notice it again in the near future
