Android@lemmy.world•what is your Favorite passwords manager and whyEnglish
1·1 year agoMine is 1Password mainly because I really like the way they handle Security by forcing you to use a key that they issue you that we know is very secure because of its length than randomness. It also has the best ui of the ones I have used.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Decentralized Systems Will Be Necessary To Stop Google From Putting The Web Into Managed DeclineEnglish
213·2 years agoThis is silly. The web is not in decline and Google is not at fault. Most of the web is garbage, and Google helps us find the information buried in a sea of ads and repetitively copied/reworded content. We are moving to a world where putting up a plagiarized page with tons of ads will not be profitable. The sooner that day arrives, the better.

Science@lemmy.ml•Thirsty in paradise: Water crises are a growing problem across the Caribbean islandsEnglish
1·2 years agoThis has a lot more to do with consumption than with production. Most of these islands are small, and it’s unrealistic for them to have large populations or a heavy tourist industry without desalination plants. Energy needs to become cheap, and honestly, wind farms and solar can help with this.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•is there a search engine for the fediverse?English
1·2 years agoI agree. I also notice a constant push to ban anything that is deemed offensive, which in most cases is just a statement of opinion that someone did not like.
Do we know they are monitoring our usage of the launcher?
Agreed but it bugs me that I need to pay Reddit to not see ads and on top of that they get paid for the content we produce. The fediverse is a better model.
I don’t object to my content being used for training. I do object to Reddit profiting from that data. It’s the reason I basically don’t participate on Reddit anymore. Anything I post in the fediverse I am aware I am offering it up for free to be crawled and used as seen fit as long as it is not monetized without my consent. I don’t consider model training to be monetization.

Android@lemmy.world•trouble with google photos app and should I switch to something else?English
22·2 years agoIt’s this kind of nonsense that always makes me run back to my iPhone.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple’s iMessage is not a “core platform” in EU, so it can stay walled offEnglish
95·2 years agoIf RCS is such an awesome standard, why not mandate it for all EU phones? Apple already supports the current standard, which is SMS. The idea that they have to open up their proprietary software seems silly to me.

Android@lemdro.id•The Android ecosystem is fracturing, losing a key strength against AppleEnglish
1·2 years agoIt is confusing. If you have two apps on your phone that do the same thing, how is the new user supposed to know what to do? I’m thinking of Samsung and how they insist on shipping their own branded stuff that, for the most part, brings nothing new to the table.

Hacker News@derp.foo•Americans are spending billions on stuff they forget to cancelEnglish
1·2 years agoI try to stick with doing all my subscriptions with apple, google or PayPal. Always keep it where it’s easy to kill.
My take on it is that the Republicans will do their best to drag this out until the election. No compromising or middle ground. Just make it out to be the crazy Democrats fault. This stuff gets to be very predictable after all these years.
Just wait till the first security vulnerability are discovered in the code that now will be able to run on iOS and which Apple can’t control directly. Nobody will remember that the cause was forcing Apple to open up their system. They will just blame Apple.

Android@lemdro.id•Samsung Galaxy S24, S24 Ultra promos highlight camera features. 7 years of updates and possible Galaxy AI subscriptions on the cardsEnglish
21·2 years agoUntil you realize that their implementation of AI, whatever that means, in their case is mediocre, and nothing more than a marketing term.

Android@lemdro.id•Samsung Galaxy S24, S24 Ultra promos highlight camera features. 7 years of updates and possible Galaxy AI subscriptions on the cardsEnglish
31·2 years agoAs with everything Samsung tends to do I’ll bet the AI stuff is half baked.
We need to allow for the possibility that it is far more weird than that which honestly is a very human centric view.

Google Pixel@lemmy.world•Google Pixel (7a, 8 Pro and Fold) dominates MKBHD's blind camera testEnglish
31·2 years agoThere was a time when there really were significant differences between these cameras. Those days are over.
It’s in to hate on Elon.
