Generally the correct answer is, it’s complicated. If you’re arguing something is black and white you’re probably privileged enough to have never had to make one of these decisions yourself. Do I want ICE to exist? No. Do I want all conservatives to die? Also no. What’s more, people have all of 2 seconds to make these kinds of decisions and generally fall back on their training, which is to render aid first and figure out the rest later. Personally, I like that that’s what their instinct is, and I’m not going to give them shit for it

I think the issue is they would argue that independence would be a 0/10. Why fight for 3/10 when you can fight for 0?

Honestly I think a lot of people just want to throw a brick at this point. So they just pick the most anti establishment person they can. Bernie/Trump/Mamdani, they just see outsiders promising to burn it down and are all aboard. Not saying that’s everyone, but the number isn’t insignificant.

Yeah I think what’s missed is that there weren’t a lot of long form podcasts like that at the time. It was great to be able to hear someone like Sean Carroll come on and talk about Spacetime for 3 hours and then have Joe convince him to start his own podcast, which is still going and really dang good. Joe served as the interested but uninformed audience to just kind of keep the person talking. Not to defend what it’s become, but it wasn’t always like it is now

Yes this is something I drill into more junior engineers as much as possible - Simplicity is a design consideration. Your designs need to convey what they are doing as clearly, intuitively, and simply as possible. You invented some new thing that automated everything? Congrats, the next person that needs to do a modification or read the drawing to react to an emergency is definitely going to break it, possibly even hurt themselves. Whenever I look at a drawing I can very quickly tell the quality of an engineer by how intuitive the drawing is - and for the quality of the notes they left when they had to do something complex

Who is arguing that money existed before people invented it? Who is arguing that America existed before 1776? The issue with God is people are arguing that it is not just a human invention, but in fact that humanity is an invention of God. Which is in direct conflict of our scientific understanding of the world around us which leads to a variety of issues. I have no idea what point you’re trying to make. Is it that made up things can have real influence? Sure, I don’t think anyone would disagree. But the difference is I use all sorts of things humans made up, I know they made up, but they are useful. If I started to argue that currency has existed since before the dawn of the universe you’d say I had a mental condition

I think the all or nothing mentality is really holding a lot of people back. I know I can’t do that kind of thing personally and always build my habits slowly. Want to go full veg? Give up one animal a month. Want to learn woodworking? Add one new tool (and only one!) each project. Want to run every day? Start with once a week and build. Also don’t get all flustered if you miss one. Just do it the next day, don’t consider yourself defeated and give up.

The problem is made up. We’re more productive than ever and should have plenty of leisure time and plenty of safety nets for old age…but that wealth has all been siphoned off by a very few. The solution to this is tax the wealthy.

I think a better phrasing would be that all calories are the same, but not all calories are equally accessible (I think this is what you’re getting at?). Eating calories that take more work to access inherently adds less stored energy at the end.
