Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If a multi-dimensional political compass existed, how many dimensions would it have? What would be those dimensions?English
2·13 days agoI found a study that may be helpful.
The project is called the Chapel Hill Expert Survey, which is being conducted by Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and others, and asks political experts in each country to evaluate the policy positions of major political parties in EU member states. This survey interprets the multidimensional political conflict as stated in the question, and in the latest survey (Version 2025.1), it is measured by the following conflict terms:

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you are boycotting "America", does that include "American culture"?English
5·29 days agoWhile I’m not in favor of boycotting culture, I do feel like boycotting products and services that incorporate it.
So I try to buy boycotted cultural products secondhand whenever possible.
This way, I can legally obtain culture, but it prevents American companies from making any additional profits. (Naturally, I avoid using Amazon[.]com when making these purchases.)
The problem then arises when an American artist performs in the country where I live.
Naturally, experiential entertainment cannot be recorded, meaning it cannot be purchased secondhand. This issue determines whether a boycott is feasible based on how individual artists respond to corruption in the United States.
Separately, I also try to avoid cultural dependency on social media platforms such as YouTube and x[.]com by prioritizing domestic alternatives (such as Nico Nico Douga and mixi2).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you say age in your language?English
3·1 month agoIn Japanese, the English phrase “12 years old” is written as ‘12歳’ or “12才”.
Both “歳” and ‘才’ are read as “sai,” and “歳” is the standard form.
As an exception, since children in elementary education typically learn the character “歳” before “才,” it is sometimes common to write ages as “12才” during the period after learning ‘才’ but before learning “歳.”

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some loanwords (originated in another language and usually retains original spelling in equivalent english) for concepts, things, or experiences that English doesnt necessarily have yet?
231·4 months ago相合傘, means two people sharing one umbrella.
相合傘 has a strong romantic implication, stemming in part from a play on words. The first two characters are pronounced あい (ai), the same as the word 愛 (ai, “love”), and thus the connotation is that both people under the umbrella are in love.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was your last “impulse buy” and was it worth it?English
6·5 months ago“Game Music Disk Guide 2”(ISBN:978-4-909483-69-0). It is supervised by Tanaka “Hally” Haruhisa, whom I impulsively bought at a bookstore this past May. This book is written in Japanese, and no English translation exists.
Compared to the first volume, which strictly focused on works released on physical media as a “disk guide,” this second volume also covers works that have never been released on physical media. Consequently, it features music from Amiga and C64 games, which are relatively unknown in Japan. This is precisely why I made the impulse purchase.
Having finished reading it, I was deeply moved to read the review in my native language of Tim Follin’s work. In conclusion, this impulse buy turned out to be a huge success for me. I’d like to express my gratitude here to the bookseller who stocked this title.

2·5 months agoAntoha MC and KUKIKODAN.
The former, Antoha MC, is a Russian rapper who I like for his dark atmosphere and melodic accompaniment that complements his humming raps.
The latter, KUKIKODAN, is a Japanese band whose lyrics and music seem to reflect on the everyday passing of daily life.
