The US was closely involved with Russian leadership after the end of the USSR that they facilitated. Eventually Putin realized he would not be allowed “at the table” with US/NATO/EU.

They have by far the largest military presence across the globe, and they maintain currency hegemony over this long period as well. It is one empire, not empires in your “both sides” or “many sides” rhetoric. The EU and Japan et all are willing servants of this hegemonic order for most of this period. Millions have been killed by wars, interventions and economic mechanisms that serve to maintain this empire.

The capitalist empire has always been like this. You are comparing trade alliances to war mongering genocidal profiteering across the globe over decades. These are not even close to equivalent.

Using “clash of civilizations” rhetoric is classic racist trope. There is one hegemonic reality currently, and referring to “Eastern empires” is dog whistling in the same way.
