Space@mander.xyz•Satellites keep photobombing the Hubble telescope, and it’s getting worse
16·2 months agoEurope, ESA, and a good amount of space actors have signed the zero debris charter that aims to increase the accuracy at which satellites are to deorbit when their activities have seized and to prevent space debris in a preventative approach.
ESA also has active plans to recover or extend space operations of satellites that needs servicing via its RISE-mission.
Finally, there are also the CAT and Clearspace-1 missions (amongst others?) which intend to actively remove satellites from orbit, or place them in the graveyard orbit.
Oh, and space lasers (for monitoring space debris).
I guess there are more, but I think this already shows it is actively being developed.

1·3 months agoWith a view to the upcoming conference, Baer also urged the ESA to be open to reform: What is needed is a mix of expensive, large-scale projects, like the Ariane rocket, and many smaller projects that rely more heavily on start-ups, she said.
Aren’t they already doing this? I see a lot of European space news about a lot of different space companies. Or are many of them not part of the ESA program?

Het was echt een schandelijke presentatie weer van Wilders. En hij voelt zich schijnbaar comfortable om met veel trots te roepen dat hij het oké vindt dat er honger wordt geleden in ontwikkelingslanden.

I am not wholy convinced by this. For one Whittaker is not Signal. Whittaker as part of Signal will represent Signal’s position, not the other way aroudn.
Secondly, opposing sexual misconduct, LGBTQ-rights, and opposing AI are not inherent political standpoints. They can linger broadly on a political spectrum.
Ignoring my first point, and assuming that Signal has absorbed Whittaker’s standpoints; has AWS or Amazon as a whole and as a company a stance against the points Whittaker (personally) advocates for?

Europe@feddit.org•Prague to ban e-scooters after residents complain of chaos on pavementsEnglish
11·4 months agoDon’t get me wrong, I am all for low traffic cities.
I think it is rather other than space allocation, though. (Broad) cycling lanes are rapidly increasing, and pavements are generally broad (like roads). Space allocation could be improved upon, but I believe it far from the main cause.
Specifically for scooters, it is part behaviour and part consequence of easy access to heavy scooters. I don’t think scooters are in-and-of-themselves a problematic transport method, I think rental scooters are.
At the same time it is worth to consider the downsides of certain modes of transportation, instead of only comparing them to cars and their infrastructure. I just don’t think the discussion needs to be a what-aboutism. Especially considering the lack for some formal training, making many of the users of scooters a hazard for others and themselves.

Europe@feddit.org•Prague to ban e-scooters after residents complain of chaos on pavementsEnglish
3·4 months agoAs a pedestrian on a pavement I have a greater issue with scooters than cars. Especially where I live there are a lot, and they don’t care about the 6km speed limit on the pavement (neither do cyclists however). Since scooters are often rental ones, they are thrown in bushes, rivers etc. Bicycles are often personal items, so they don’t get strewn around, and the rentals have specific parking spots.
Primarily the rules should be enforced better and traffic rules should be taught better/at a younger age. But I think scooters are easier to misuse than bicycles or cars. Also, motorists need formal training, while scooters can be used by people without a license. There are lot of young teenagers using them here.
Many motorists here are dicks here too though, but they mostly are only a concern when I cross a street. So I wouldn’t say less or more, but many scooterists invade a space that is reserved for pedestrians. Maybe scooters need some low entry training or something.

2·4 months agoDoes Signal have a position in the first place? As far as I know they only get political when encryption is threatened.
They did give away those neck thingies during the BLM protests, but if I remember correctly they gave them away to people protesting (not specifically BLM). After that I think they have been pretty neutral ( correct me if I am wrong though :) )
Wish they kept the toolbar addon :/ I know you can access it using about:translator, but it’s not as accessible.

1·4 months agoCommenters here should really read the article before making their posts. Many of the critiques I read here are covered in the article.
People can of course have a preference of weather/temperature, however, the ‘bad’ weather in the Netherlands is often exaggerated.
And I have called rain ‘bad weather’ as well, but it took a change in perspective to see that rain is neither good nor bad (it is just a logical consequence of our ecosystem). I now enjoy the occasional rain shower or overcast days.
Bad weather doesn’t exist, only bad clothing. It’s about perspective, I have come to believe.
Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær.

It would be cool if we had a map of Europe/EEA filled with data about the software provider in each state or province/region.
