Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some companies that deserve to be boycotted to death?
73·2 years agoExcept the carbon footprint of Starlink is estimated to be 30x greater than terrestrial alternatives.
More than half of all satellites in space are already Starlink at around 5,000, with 12,000 planned in the near future and up to 42,000 as a later expansion.
It’s just not sustainable.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an amusing thing to say before going under general anesthesia?

The alien couldn’t think of the word “collar”

Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•What were some movies you had to look up explanations of after watching?English
3·2 years agoI’ve heard that you can watch that movie in a loop starting at any point and it doesn’t make any more or less sense than starting at the beginning.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Where can I find recipes without the author's personal anecdotes?
71·2 years agoI mean, it’s not usual to find more modern books at a thrift store. Yeah a lot of them are old, but newer ones are there.
Even among the old ones there are some that are sought after, like Betty Crocker’s Cooky Book. Best snickerdoodles of my life.
Most people that would go apple picking aren’t getting that many, like half a basket, maybe 15-20 pounds at most. It takes like 10 minutes and you’re paying by the pound for what you take home for half the price or less than you would at the store.
It can be a fun activity for kids, I don’t see what you’re upset about.
I found the setting for showing a user’s instance, but still no setting for showing the instance of communities.
On Android, former Relay for Reddit user.
Right now I have SEVEN lemmy apps on my home screen as I figure out which I like best. So far I keep going back to Sync the most.
Boost’s animations suck. It takes too long to show the post list after swiping away an image and the whole screen goes black, it’s a bit jarring.
Liftoff works well but it’s ugly.
Jerboa isn’t very customizable and the post list doesn’t feel dense enough.
Voyager literally does not tell you what instance the community you’re viewing is on.
I haven’t touched Thunder in a while but I see they’ve updated quite a bit with a lot more customization. I remember older versions being nice, so I’ll give it a try again.
Connect is about the same as Liftoff, works well but kinda ugly. Admittedly not as ugly though.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Thinking of visiting a pawn shop. What should I know?
132·2 years agoMost pawn shops deal primarily with guns, tools, and jewelry. You’ll also find all kinds of electronics and collectibles, some places may have furniture too.
Not enough people (including you) don’t know that “Nazi” is an abbreviation for “national socialist”.
This meme is about telling Nazis we’re not interested in their BS.

Technology@lemmy.world•Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming AppleEnglish
1·2 years agoRCS wasn’t originally supposed to run on data, it only does now because carriers didn’t want to support it natively.
The other day I launched an old game and got met with an error, something about directX9 and missing a redistributable file or something. Decided not to fuck with it.
Yesterday I launched it again to take a closer look at the error message to see if I could fix it. No error message, game booted without issues.
My confusion.

Technology@lemmy.world•Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming AppleEnglish
5·2 years agoSamsung and Google are just now getting around to supporting it
Hey now, I’ve been rocking RCS for three years. The only reason it took so long to begin with is because Google was trying to get service providers to implement it themselves. Google finally said fuck it and started doing it themselves iMessage style and then providers started playing along.

Technology@lemmy.world•Results of the "Can you tell which images are AI generated?" surveyEnglish
7·2 years agoThere are newer AI tools that can do text accurately. Usually it’s with text provided in the prompt though, so it’s arguably not AI generated, just AI placed.
The unreadable AI text you’re familiar with is done without the AI really knowing what text is, and they’re just making something that looks vaguely like it. It’s the same way they normally handle any kind of object or shape. Newer tools are built specifically for text, so it actually is readable and makes sense.
