Slightly off topic, but this site has a good graphic that explains some photography basics, like how ISO and aperture affect the shot.

Technology@lemmy.world•Ad blocking is alive and well, despite Chrome's attempts to make it harderEnglish
7·1 天前I have got a mental picture of a Linux super nerd trying to browse through a text only browser on their oven’s display now though 😁

151·1 天前What? Nobody’s using their browser on an appliance (except for a handful of masochists with Samsung fridges). I said to most people their browser is on an appliance, as in they treat computers, phones, and laptops like appliances, in that they’re mysterious boxes that do a particular job.
Hardly anyone is trying to hack their appliances, and the majority of people just lump their computing devices into the same category - it does what it was designed for and nothing else

571·1 天前Don’t forget that most people don’t know that blocking ads is possible. To most people, their browser is on an appliance, like a washing machine or fridge. They know how to do the basics, but that’s about it.

guitars@lemmy.world•Looking for some easy to learn songs, the more, the betterEnglish
3·3 天前Polly and Molly’s Lips by Nirvana are simple, and from what I remember, most Sex Pistols songs are quite straightforward too :)
I usually listen to punk and rock, but today I’m having a boiler replaced, and the gas engineer introduced me to Gold Radio, a UK based station. They’ve been playing classics from the 50s to the 80s, so I’ve heard loads of old songs that I haven’t heard for years.
Right now one of my favourites is playing though, Mister Blue Sky by ELO. Possibly one of the best songs of all time :D

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Would you be willing to finish a project or creation instantly, in exchange for losing any experience or materials you'd otherwise have doing it the long way?English
3·4 天前Depending on the project, absolutely yes. I’ve got a load of maintenance projects that need doing on my house that I’ve been putting off because there’s a huge time investment, or they need to be done in nice weather. I wouldn’t be learning anything that would be particularly useful to me in the future, so getting them done instantly would be a massive help.
As an example, my garden is very overgrown and needs a few days of dry weather to complete. It’s mostly going to be cutting everything back with strimmers and hedge trimmers and then clearing the cuttings away. I already know how to do it, but even if I didn’t, it wouldn’t be difficult to learn so that I can keep on top of it going forward.

1·4 天前Well, yeah, if you talk to someone like they’re a stranger it’s going to sound awkward. I already know my friend’s names and details about their families, because we’re friends. I’m not thinking of approaching random people in the street and spouting private details of their lives…
The reason I said that it would have information that they chose to share is for precisely that - they’ve actively chosen to share that information with you in particular. An actual conversation between friends would be more like
Hey stranger, long time no see (slightly silly intro between friends, assuming the info hasn’t loaded yet). How’ve you been?
Yeah, not bad thanks. Busy with the kids, but all good (hopefully by now everything’s loaded)
I can imagine. How’s Kelly (one of the kids) finding school? Is she excited for her birthday?
Oh, she hasn’t stopped talking about it. I’m dreading having a house full of overexcited kids in the house for her party, but she’s really looking forward to it.
Yeah, I don’t envy you for that! (Both laugh, because as much as dads love our kids, birthday parties are hard work). Anyway, I’ve got to go. Nice to see you again Carl, good luck with the party
Much more organic when you have an actual conversation with a friend and don’t just randomly spout facts at someone 👍

2·5 天前This is what really bugs me with technology like this. I have some memory issues where I can’t immediately recall details sometimes, so forget things like names. Something like these glasses with a non shitty version of Facebook would be amazing for me.
Imagine walking down the street and seeing someone you know, and a little window pops up with some relevant information that they’ve chosen to share with you. It could have their name and a few lines of other information, like saying that their birthday is a few days away, or their kid’s and partner’s names.
Instead we’ve got the shittiest version possible where they just suck in as much data as possible to sell to other shitty companies 😤

Technology@lemmy.world•Windows 11 just lost 5% market share in two months despite Windows 10 losing support.English
12·5 天前It depends on what you’re doing. I’ve got Mint on my laptop and main PC, and the experience is different on both. On the laptop I tend to play Minecraft and do some basic tasks like taking notes and browsing the web. There’s nothing in Mint that really affects that, so it doesn’t hold me back at all.
On the PC though, I’ve got all of my important software, and some of it has had to be installed manually because the Mint repos are outdated. It’s nothing that’s particularly difficult to fix, but I know my way around computers. For your average user, it would be too much.
I did look at changing the DE, but apparently KDE doesn’t work well with Mint. I want to change distros anyway though, as some of the problems I’m having are from the outdated repos. I’ve only been on Mint properly for a few months, but have had to manually install a few programs already
Thanks for replying, it looks like I’ve got some homework to do :D
I did look at the fstab page, but I didn’t understand enough to get an answer. I’ll look at the mount page tonight, thank you :)
I thought that might be the case, but do you know if changing the group would help at all?
That could work really well then, especially as I’m looking to change distros. Mint is great, but it’s got a few issues that are getting in my way now.
Thank you :)
That could work then. I tend to have to use the same sites for the various sites, like Facebook for example, but it’s rare that I need to use the same site for different accounts on the same site. Most of the sites use Gmail for now, but that does work well with multiple accounts.
I’ll have a proper look when I get home later. Thank you :)
Unfortunately that won’t work for me, I need them to be completely separate. I’ve got physical and mental issues that mean I get brain fog, and then get things muddled up. If the tab groups share things like bookmarks or saved logins, there’s a chance that I’ll open the wrong link, or log in to the wrong email.
That’s interesting. I knew that Firefox had options for different profiles, but last time I tried I couldn’t get it working the way I wanted. I’ll have another look, thanks :)
